Title: Piston to Case Clearance
Post by: Chip Lane on July 21, 2010, 13:20:15 pm
I have recently completed a rebuild of my 2332 motor. The motor had not been together for long when I noticed a rather off putting knocking sound coming from what sounded like big ends. The sound only occurred when introducing the engine to load. The sound did not change when hot or cold. After stripping the motor I discovered that the piston skirt on cylinders 3 & 4 were just catching on the case at bottom dead centre. The onset of load  caused the piston to rock enough to make the contact. Some hand clearancing was all that was required to alleviate the problem. The motor is back together with no knocks.
Thought I would just share the experience as piston to case clearance is not an area I have checked before when building a motor. As the motor is turbo charged, it takes a good many hours to remove. Worth checking!

Piston No 3 Pre clearancing

This is one of the first Autolinea cases. Quality of finish not as good as the later units!
