The Cal-look Lounge

Here is my first car! I got it from my parents on the 30 of June. they bought it six months ago without telling me ::) :)
I already stripped the interior and body, removed the speedometer cable, electricity of the motor, etc.
I just need to remove the bolts that keep the body on the chassis.

And here are some influences for this car ;)

but I'm really doubting about the rear lights. keeping the elephant feet or putting earlier lights on.
my fenders and lights are in good condition, that's what makes it so hard.

put on earlier lights if you can and possibly fill the "ears" behind the quarter windows.

Even though I'm not too much of a fan of the big Elephant feet rear lights, I'm even less of a fan of aging a car.

Mind you I do like to cut my cars up, I love that custom touch. But the biggest faux-pas most of us have ever made (car-wise  ;D) is to have made it look older than it really is. Just ask Dem/Wolfwest, one of the nicest lookers in the WW and still he would have gone late if he was to do it again.

So keep the Big lights. Do weld up the ears (but keep the half moon crescent). The first white car is a great example of how it could look.

I actually meant converting to the "churchwindow" rearlights as on the blue car above, the rest (hoods, headlights) will stay the same.
and I think the ears will be fillled, I only doubt how. completely remove them is very complex, while just welding a plate in place of the vents is much easier.

exactly, i don't think just changing the elephants to churchwindows is a biggie.

churchwindows would suit the car very well and that's okay to do in my opinion.  There are cars that are exactly like the look you want, only built in another year, so no problem there...
Please do not remove the ears, it will be a lot of work, it will not be original and before you know it you end up like me.  take this advice from an older man  ;D don't do it.  I've painted my ears and I think I've created a nice look... nice result and simple to do.

Today the body and pan were split. :) The body was welded to the pan at the left jackstand. >:( Luckily that was the only place.

But it's the costs aspect. I'm on a very limited budget :(. I think I'll keep them for now, I can change them later on.

Yesterday and the day before I worked on removing the electricity out of the body. Removing the electricity from the engine and rear light was very difficult, but finally I got it out.
I also removed the rear hinges, and the glovebox with front lock.

 :)

The body rests now on a frame, and I bare-metalled some areas with rust.
Today I'm going to remove the crap from the inner wings.

Finally a new update after 3 weeks :-[
I bought a 1969 shell today, which is much better than what I have now. :) It still needs a bit welding in some places, but it's much less work than the mexican shell.
I stripped the pan too, just needs cleaning up the underside.

Does somebody know how to safely remove the springplates and get them back on?

yep, undo the 4 15mm bolts
remove the outer rubber bush
mark 2 or 3 lines on the springplate and torsion bar
then get 2 lever bars, to remove the springplate off of the torsion bar, and try not to pull out the bar itself

better yet, after removing the hardware, use a turnbuckle from the holes at the back of the springplate to the shock tower and this way you dont break your fingers or your tools. MUCH SAFER AND EASIER THAN PRYBARS

Well, not a lot. I removed most off the filler from the left side behind the door, at some places there was like 1 cm of it ???
there was some more cleaningwork, and that's all I (and my dad) did. I'm in the last, busy, year of secondary school so progress wont go as fast :(

Today I picked up a rustfree engine lid (without vent holes) for 25 euros. That saves me the useless work to a rusty one. :)

Went for 2 rustfree doors today. They came with all the window crap, and a talbot mirror. :) The chrome around the windows is already black, a thing i won't have to do now ;D

Dusting off this thread for an update...
I got a new pan, which suffered from some transportation damage, but was perfect otherwise.
The damage is already repaired by a friend of my father. :) It's perfectly straight now. 8)
The body I bought will not be used, but cut up. The reason it won't be used is because the doors don't fit. >:(
I'll use some parts for my old body, and sell the other good parts. :)

No support when welding the channels in. Normally you need 95 cm on the underside of the doors, this one had 94 cm.

Vaughn's car made quite an impression on many of us. Wasn't exceptionally pretty but by early 80's it was nasty fast for a street car.

The satisfaction when you drive a car you restored :) That "fast" part will have to wait some more years tho, the car needs to be "done" first cause this will be my only car ;)

Finally an update :o I have almost three months to work on the car, so things will progress finally :)

Well, I haven't updated this topic for 2 months, but I have been working on the car. Tomorrow I'll be painting some bits for the pan. The body is welded and will be dropped of at my house so I can do the bodywork. Pics are for tomorrow or the day after tomorrow  ;)

The pan is completely painted, front axle mounted, gearbox mounted, brakes hooked up (not yet filled with fluid).

The body has been put on the pan too, since the underside of the body and the pan already had paint.
Some additional welding has been done too. Trimholes, dashboard, antennahole and some other little things.

So this is where I'm at right now, doing the bodywork. I hope to have it finished in 2 or 3 weeks, so the car can go to the painter and I can start checking the wiring and fix the interior.

Well it has been far too long since I updated this topic.

I haven't worked on this thing for a while, I am still doing bodywork.
I have painted most of the worked on areas with spray can primer to prevent them from rusting.

I do have a slight problem with the underside of the dash. I don't know what the function is for every hole I have there. I want to weld every hole I don't need, I want it to be clean.

Hey, you're doing a great job and I admire your tenacity and dedication to your project! It reminds me of the first car I did many years ago. I bought it from my uncle and it was very rusty. I learned a ton by working on that car! If you continue with how you're doing things it will come out great, keep it up! This makes me want to take on anther project. :D

It has been a long time again since I posted an update. I was busy with my thesis until the end of June, so not much has happened till then.
I have been working on the car this summer tho. Most of the electricity is in as are the taillights and headlights.
Unfortunately I can not put the lovely colour coded headlight rings on jet, because I don't have the bolts jet.

I have been struggling with the fender beading tho. It seems to be too long, holes are not in the right place.

I do have bad news tho. The guy that is going to do the upholstery has so much work, that my seats are going to take at least 3 months.
So I am going to try to get everything else done in 3 months, except lowering and cool rims. After homologation is when stance and cool rims will come.  :)

regarding the fender beadings: The precut ones do not fit perfectly when you buy them. The end in the top of your picture has to be on the front end of the front fenders / the rear end of the rear fenders. It is layed around the corner of the fenders. Best thing would be to have a look at a car with orignal beadings.
Maybe it would be a good idea to try colour matching beadings, i think that will perfectly match the coloured head light rings. There are several dealers that sell coloured beadings.

Put the beading in a bucket of hot water before you fit them - they are not flexible enough otherwise. Great looking car too!

The precut beadings didn't fit at all, so I returned them and used the uncut ones. I also fitted the locks off the doors and the big door rubbers.

3 Months since the last time I posted, some progress has been made in that period.

The exterior is almost done except for the plate underneath the bonnet, the windscreen and windscreen wipers.
The interior needs the front part of the carpets and the seats need to be assembled. The dashboard also needs finishing.
And some other small details.

Cool wheels and lowering will happen when the car drives and is registered.

Right now I am dealing with paperwork to register the car and I am waiting for the red9 coilover set I ordered.
If the paperwork is done and the red9 set arrives, the bug can come down. The wheels will also get mounted then, which are already waiting in the garage.  ;D

do you still have the leafsprings in the front beam? or do you go without and only with the coilovers?

It is the setup from red9 design. The leafsprings are gone, in their place is a support to keep the trailing arms in the front beam.
This is the 2 to 4 inch drop version, currently on it's highest setting.

Looking good! I love the non-vented bonnet with big lights.

So I'll recap what has been done and what has happened since the previous post.
In the beginning of July 2016 in installed a Trafficcox shifter.
Shifts awesome (very short), looks good and cheaper than bug-tech.

The Red9 suspension was unbearably hard, I think because the ball joints were constantly at the end of their range. So I installed and adjustable stock width beam with dropped spindles.
I also upgraded the drum brakes to ventilated disk brakes. Bigger brake cylinders went in at the rear and A mechanical brake servo from German Performance Parts.

Fast forward to Freddy files 2017, where I got a Top 20 award!  ;D

In April 2017 I installed two 36DRLA carbs and a CSP dual muffler. I also put extra gauges in my dashboard.

The CSP dual muffler was cut and re-welded because it stuck out too far and was way too low.

At the Bugshow I was really late to the showgrounds on Saturday and found no parking spot. Luckily Mike allowed me to park my car with the DAS club.

In February I installed A rack & pinion steering rack from German Perfomance Parts.
The steering feel is absolutely awesome.

Last month I installed Bilstein shocks and modified Z-bar links so it works directly. I also installed a second pair of caster shims.

How does it feels with the Bilstein shocks?

It's a firm ride, but it doesn't lock up when the shock has to travel fast like a twin tube.
That's nice on the concrete roads around here.

Big suprise for me that there is two dealers that sell a rack and pinion kit now suddenly. I am making my own kit with the bracket from Alex but had to cut the tank etc.
Please tell more about how it feels to use, i see you don't have a steering damper?

I didn't have to cut the tank. I even installed it without taking out the tank, although I wouldn't recommend that  ::)
The steering is light, very good feel, zero play. I can easily turn the steering wheel while standing still, and it's a 13" wheel.

Nice, did you feel any difference going over bumps with one or both wheels?
How many turns from lock to lock?

The car feels stable over bumps, but I am not especially looking to hit each and every one of them  :D
Lock to lock is 3 turns, full lock is around 45° (guessing, not measuring)

Two weeks ago the rear left wheel came loose. The fender is scrap, the wheel only has paint damage (I checked the balance).
So I decided to convert to earlier taillights. I'm also going to get new front fenders since the wheel arch is 2.5 cm higher on the left one, that fucked up the stance from the left side really bad.  ::)

The rear fenders fit after some minor work. the new front fenders look like the same as the right front one that's on the car. So I will mount the new left one first and check if there is any difference in dimensions.  :)

The holes for the taillights in the rear fenders are wrong tho', does anyone have a template for this?

What's the verdict on the exhaust, does it fit nicely? Sound good?

The evo will only get mounted when my 2.2l is finished.

The dual mufflers hang too low, the Y pipe after the collector is shortened to get the mufflers to fit nice. Sound is nice, not too loud. I have more noise from the dellorto's.

Sorry I was meaning the Evo, it's one cool looking "stealth" exhaust. I'd be interests in hearing how well it fits, when your new engine is ready.

They came loose, thread wasn't damaged.
At least I will have prettier taillights now, if I can find the right mounting location  :D

Last week the fenders were already in primer, so it's moving along quite fast  :)

Only the steering shaft to connect to the rack. everything else is bolt on, and it fits under the tank  :)

Did you need to cut a new slot on the steering rack where the tie rod bracket connects? The slot on mine is 180° off where it needs to be.

No, the kit is bolt on except for the steering shaft.

Just looked back at your rack pis, looks the same rack as mine but different kit from different vendor. Your tie rod bracket fits as mine should but the locking bolt slot on the rack is on the opposite side. I've wondered if I have a wrong rack for a lhd car.

Could you possibly read the part number from your rack if and when possible? I know its not easily accessible so no problems if you can't  ;)

Had been putting everything together for this conversion using a bracket from Alex on here. The part number I found for the rhd rack was: 868 419 065

Have you got any pics of yours going together or perhaps know of any threads detailing the conversion on a rhd car? I put together a word document with lots of info collated - happy to email it over if you pm me your email.

That number isn't on my rack, mine is topran brand. I think I remember reading you need a lhd rack for a rhd car and vice versa, does that sound right?

I used Alex's kit too, also used a polo 6n2 steering yoke and some mk1 polo parts to make it all connect together.

Mk1 polo lower steering column attaches to the input on rack, polo 6n2 yoke modified to fit the input shaft on one end and connect to my shortened beetle steering column.

I've been prepping my car for the upcoming technical inspection in Belgium. I've painted the rack and pinion kit black, because it is not really legal.
Other people have passed the inspection with the rack and pinion kit painted black, simply because it goes unnoticed that way  ::) :D

I did have the rack & pinion, vented disk brakes, double carbs and dual mufflers mounted.

I also bought an irs pan over summer. This will make the irs conversion much easier. And it's from september 67 so easier for the technical inspection in Belgium  :D

I already disassembled the rear suspension. Took of all brake lines, cables, parking brake lever, shift lever and shiftrod.

The seat frames and jack points were cut down so I'm removing those too. A little rust spot underneath the right seatframe.

Cleaned up the top of the pan today. Only one extra spot has some holes.

Pan is fully cleaned. Removed what was remaining of the jack points. Some rust there but nothing big.

The left tube for the handbrake cable was broken of. Luckily for me Nicolas made a tube that fits the chassis and the outer cable. Thanks Nicolas!

The progress in real life is faster than the progress of this topic luckily  ::) :P The pan has been welded and powdercoated. I'm reassembling it at this moment.

I cleaned up the electricity behind the dash.

The rear suspension is all mounted up with the Kerscher disk brakes  ;D

The body is now separated from the chassis.

And I switched the front suspension to the new pan.

These are Kerscher disk brakes with TUV. I've heard multiple stories that it's accepted, but we'll see  :)

Yesterday Peter helped me to get the engine mounted to the new chassis. I also cleaned up all the threads I could reach to bolt the body to the pan. Almost ready for the marriage  :D

It's a Citroën AC4 parts car. My dad has one that he restored in the 80's and got married in. It was hit by another car once. We had to buy this one for parts since parts are really hard to source for these cars. I've tried to find a picture of it, but can't find any  ::)  :D

Have you considered turning it into a HotRod??  ;) ;D :o
Maybe an SM/Maserati V6 would fit under the hood?

The last months I've properly attached the body to the pan, hooked up stuff like the heater etc. The electricity is mostly done now too.
I had bought a different speedometer too since mine broke. It's from an auto bug so it has more warning lights. I'm going to use the ATF light as the warning light for the line lock  ;D One problem though: the speedo cable wouldn't go in this speedo, the input shaft was mangled. So I opened both speedo's to get the input shaft from the original one. I also painted the needles orange while I was at it to match the VDO gauges  8)

This week I mounted the carbs and fuel lines and started the engine. I also put most of the carpet back in the car
 Today I'll mount the seats and go for a test drive :o  :)

I swapped seats with Dem (Wolfswest) since he wanted original seats and I wanted bucket seats. The original seats I had weren't going to fit on this pan anyway (2 point vs 3 point mounting).
I first mounted the cover and piece of carpet to the rear seat.

I also bought stock seats for 100 bucks for the technical inspection. I installed those, I'll install the bucket seats later.

I took it for a test drive around the block, everything worked fine  8)

I bet it's been nice to have a drive after it being stripped and rebuilt! Love the little detail of repainting the needle orange by the way :)

It was really nice! I like little details like that. Many people won't notice but I'll see it all the time when driving  :D

The soonest I was able to get an appointment for the technical inspection is on 10/6, which is not a bad thing since I just got a plate removed from my collarbone and have to keep calm for a week or 2 anyway  :)
