Title: Cal Look Karmann Ghia thread
Post by: Jim Ratto on August 04, 2010, 17:26:39 pm
While surfing Google, I found this car and was wondering if anybody knows more about it? I was actually surfing for pics of David Ward's blue KG, so if you're reading this David, could you post pics of your Ghia and some information on it? (I remember seeing a blog or something about your KG, motor, heads etc.... now I can't find it)

and while we're on the topic, post pics or thoughts about your favorite KG's past and present. Some of you might remember I had a little seat time in a certain pink one... ::)

thanks
Jim R

yes that's David's car. I really like that KG, it is so subtle.

What about the KG I posted?

Not sure. What I like so much abotu this KG is the combination of the color and the wheels....almost 100% exact to what I'd like to do with my '67 at some point. The "shocking" contrast between the powder blue and the starkness of the wheels has a certain "cool" feel to it.

i have always loved Bernards old ghia, not to everybody's taste, but I wish it wasn't locked up in a garage it needs to be thrashed just like Bernie did.

Very nice Ghia.  I too like the color contrast between the light, bright paint against the Fuchs.  If there are more pics of the car I'd love to see it.

Here's a shot of my Ghia taken a few weeks ago at the track.  I encountered a fuel delivery problem that day and only made a couple of passes.

The current 2054 features original Lonnie Reed Wedge Ports, Italian IDA's (both from my brother's old car (circa 1980's).  Its fun.  This combo has run 13.05 with a driver-assisted slow 1.86 60' time.   :P  I've run a 1.52 60', so I think its a 12.8 combo when there's fuel running through the carbs.   ;D

Seeing your shortblock Jim, has really got me thinking about getting the 2332 back together.   ;)

What track, David?  I love how east of the Rockies it aint a drag strip if it's not surrounded by corn.   8)

I like the colour too. Similar to the "aqua blue" stuff you posted some time ago.

cool...i haven't seen Pauls Ghia with the Empi seats installed....looks great!

i wasn't sure if he still had it....he's been keeping a really low profile for a year or two now.......say hi to him from me if you see him!

for me though i still think its really hard to beat the two Porsche india red Ghia's in Volksworld issue#1, one on Fuchs the other on genuine empi 8's with T bars and filled nostrils......very very cool........otherwise they can look a bit too restocal for me......

cheers....Jick

Bernard Newbury's old Ghia? Fantastic car, but I certainly wouldn't call it Cal-look.

Took those photo's a couple of years ago just after the seats were installed.
Has'nt seen the road since last year after a carb problem + his work so is now planned to have a few jobs done over winter and back out next year.
Still get out for a few pints with him so will say hello and give him a kick to get back on here ;D
Always liked Brian Burrows Ghia(Ivans at some point?) as a cal looker (before he stuck all the vzi stickers all over it), will look for some pics.

The current owner has pulled all the stickers off and painted the stripes blue to match the rest of the car again. Looks good on the Ercos.  8)

It was featured in Hot VWs couple of years ago and painted by one of the German Folks guys (Paul Smoot?), I think that's second Paprika Red car that I've seen in print.

Couple of French Ghias, the rear one was Paprika Red too.

no this was a guy that worked @ one of the Bugformances up in San Jose at the time, 1989 1990 or so.... very clean car from what I remember. Sheep and I saw it in person @ the shop way back when. Big Swedish blonde dude owned it. Nice guy and nice car.

Fabs there is an orange KG from San Jose in 1990 "Cal Look" Hot VW's that would be cool to see here too.

I know the car your talking about. It is in the swap/pit area of Sacramento Bug-O every few years. I have pics somewhere. It had detailed Fuchs, T-Bars and a very clean IDA engine. I think the guy works for Bug-O-Rama Promotions.

Found a couple of pics I took of it back in 2004... very shortly after the current owner had just bought it....

I used to see a red Ghia at Sac around 10 years ago. Not in the show but racing. Had 14" alloys, black T bars, IDA motor with aluminum engine compartment panel and a sweet black and red herculon interior. I never took any pictures of it unfortunately.
Does it ring a bell with anyone here?

i totally agree....one of my favourite Ghia's ever....everything about it is perfect,i think they respond so much better to that pastel color/color coded late 70's /80's style california look rather than the more factory kind of "old school" for want of a better phrase look.

Verry nice KG but did all the effort to find a really healthy ghia with no rust in the air-intakes and then closed them would be a verry silly thing to do  ::)
My plan for my 67 is:
lotus white
original red interior (is allready at the shop to restore)
detailed pedrini's
clean stock 1500 (maybe little bit modified)
and for the callook stance it's up to you guys  ;D
whole plan is to make it pass the daily technical inspection, my 68 bug has 944 brakes and 1700 typ4 and don't want that restriction sh*t anymore  :-\

I couldn't disagree more, filling the vents is like putting a honeycomb grill in a 32 ford, yea, it's different, but it looks WRONG!!!!!! that is one of the all time iconic noses, when you see it, you know exactly what youre looking at. just my .02

I am sure I am committing heresy by not knowing this car, but does anyone have anymore pictures of it as loving the paint job?

As for the nose grills, for me they make a Ghia so definitely not losing mine.  Alas, twelve years ago when I bought mine, I bought a convertible 69 (70 model) so now have the wraparound indicators but am sticking with them rather than welding up the area and putting in bullets.

I am not a big fan of two tone paint on bugs, but I absolutely love it in ghias with the black roof!!

On the back of VW Trends there used to be an advertisement (I forget the name of the retailer) with a red ghia driving through the countryside with a chrome muffler and header sticking out the back-that was a nice looking VW.

OMG, now it's for sure I have to make mine a callooker (and better start write now  :P)   :o

Keep the pictures coming  8)

Be sure of it that it has to be a callooker and let Roger Grago's car be an example.  This is also a late sixties car.  Good luck

I would take this one as an example, it’s soooo nice with the cleaned vents. ;)

i totally agree....one of my favourite Ghia's ever....everything about it is perfect,i think they respond so much better to that pastel color/color coded late 70's /80's style california look rather than the more factory kind of "old school" for want of a better phrase look.

Verry nice KG but did all the effort to find a really healthy ghia with no rust in the air-intakes and then closed them would be a verry silly thing to do  ::)
My plan for my 67 is:
lotus white
original red interior (is allready at the shop to restore)
detailed pedrini's
clean stock 1500 (maybe little bit modified)
and for the callook stance it's up to you guys  ;D
whole plan is to make it pass the daily technical inspection, my 68 bug has 944 brakes and 1700 typ4 and don't want that restriction sh*t anymore  :-\

gr
Wout

That is a good plan, Wout, it will be a very cool car.  If you start with a really nice bases like a Karmann Ghia, you don't need a lot of modifications to make it work.  Less is more they say and for a karmann ghia it is surely true.  Perhaps a black roof ;D

Mine! Still would like to try color coded head und tail light bezels and getting rid of the over riders (but don't like the look of three piece bumpers because of the bolts and nuts holding them together, so one piece bumpers would be way to go). Cal Look rubbers are not available for the Type 34 so that would be the next problem. Anyway, that's the way it is right now.

Georg, there is a guy that makes cal-look rubber. I had it on my ghia before I re-did it. Email Lee Hedges and he can probably tell you, I believe it is a guy here in the states (Oregon) that made them. Are you a part of the Type-34 registry? I am sure you would find them on that site. I know that the cal-look rubber was a lot cheaper than the rubber to house the trim...granted I think I got my window rubbers back in '02

Hmm, you could be right. But from what I know is that the glass windows started in 69 1/2. Its sitting on an irs pan but its not the original pan from the car. I bought the body cut in two pieces and used another pan.
That type 3 ghia looks awsome by the way!

I'm not a fan of the later model, huge tail light Ghia's, but I like that orange one above ^.  Very clean lines and the removal of the bumpers and the hidden exhaust (possible turbo?) "works" very well.  Nicely done.  Would like to see more pictures of that car.

shortly to be landing in the uk and hitting the tracks in a couple of months when finished, will be running at bug in, ebi and cal look drag day,  also this will likely be making a odd apearance or 2

(http://i148.photobucket.com/albums/s13/early-air/100_0949.jpg) being fitted up with a n/a 2387, is running a 002 bus box with berg conversion and has been narrowed to take 205-70-15's

That was a good deal...it just slipped through my hands. It deserves to be completed.

Hey patrick,
i tried to buy it from Rick earlier in the year, but he wouldnt sell overseas at the time, i contacted him in october just for info on how he did the narrowing as i was intending to carry this out to another lowlite i own, however i couldnt believe my luck when he said he still had it!  a deal was done for a very reasonable sum and it docked here in the uk 27th december,  should collect it next week,  it shipped with some race trim seats inside it and as soon as it gets here it will be going in to have a few areas of paint ammended and then the cage and re-trim!  engine is being freshened at the moment and the ida's have just been vapour blasted, fine glass bead blasted, fuel bowls opened out and are just having the 3rd progression holes drilled and float levels set before fitting to the motor.  motor is having a fk89 fitted, compression up to 10.5:1 and is running comp eliminator heads.

i cant take the credit for the box conversion,  it was done prior to my purchase.  it has been re-worked and has extra gusseting,  hope i wont break it!

Found it on the NET with the following info:

purchased this 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia in 1971 for $500 from an active USAF colonel (the colonel actually had his ‘grunts’ stick it in a hanger and spray it with the camouflage paint they were using to paint the fighter aircraft!).  We left it camouflaged but otherwise stripped it bare, reinforced the frame, put Porsche disk brakes on it and installed a Hewland gearbox.  We then welded up a set of VW Type I heads, ported ‘em, dropped in bigger valves, built a 1906 ‘cc’ motor (88 mm pistons/78.4 mm Okrasa forged crank) with dry-sump lubrication, a Sig Erson cam and then topped it all with Weber 48 IDA carburetors (182 HP@6500). I gave the guys with the ‘SS’ big-block street Chevy’s fits with that little car!

[[attachment=1][attachment=2]   I did few changes to my ghia through the years before I sold it to Ron Greiner. I now think the best look was with the 4.5 alloys all around and with the rear bumper. The car was a 1970, but I put on the smaller -69 front turn signals. Fun days...  Bill

can't believe there have been no pics of Clive Househam's Ghia from 1986/87 - built in the UK and still looks the same today.

Absolutely loving this thread and forum. It's inspirational. Still a way to go on mine. Has a fully built John Maher 1600, standard other than electronic ignition and balanced/blue printed. Previous owner had it built, runs like a dream, shame the bodywork doesn't match the engine.. :D :D :D :D

It's a Ghia 'vert, and therefore is cool. Pair of 36 DRLAs and a decent exhaust would wake it up a treat! Welcome to the forum, always the first tab open on my phone.

Thanks. Glad I stumbled across it. Had a beetle since there was just magazines. Bought the Ghia about 15 years back as a daily. Now it's used on sunny days and fun days. Hoping one day to get EBI. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

might as well use this topic rather than start a new one. :)

my callook history is ok, bur far from perfect, so I was hoping one of u guys could give me an answer:

When dit people start with filling the nostrils on a karmann?
When I started mine 10 years ago I had the red Marc Souter and the babyblue jeff benedict cars in mind.
As I was (AM) truly in love with these cars I also loved the look of roger grago, Tod Fuller and of course frenchy's ghia. Those 4 cars realy pulled me in to the (particularly karmann) callook scene.
seeing the souter car in real life and knowing it is in good hands and still in it's former glory realy makes me happy. It realy is a joy to see it ride and to be able to ride along with it, like last week ;D
[attachment=1]
I know that the baby blue Benedict car should be in new zeeland somewhere, but not sure if still in the same form?

I had a real hard time choosing a colour so I tried to make a blend of the cars that influenced me and wanted a vw porsche colour so I went with no turn signals, filled nostrils and signal yellow. for five years I was convinced this was the way to go.
until last week when I decided that the yellow just didn't go with the look so I opened the nostrills again
[attachment=2]
now just need to convince myserf it was a wise decision...  ::) And maybe try some bumpers for a change..

but to stick to my question:

I know the Souter and Benedict cars were build around the late 70s, but were they the first?

thank you

Glauco

I think the Jeff Benedict car (as you say, now in New Zealand) is nothing like it was. I seem to remember plans to paint it black and put big billet wheels on it.
Steve Tims gold lowlight drag Ghia had the nose grilles plated over but I think that was just rivitted aluminium. I'd guess it became popular as people started to race them, especially with fibreglass fronts.

Page 6 of this topic tells me this. Owned by a guy named QT VW here on the forum..
If would be a pita if it is black on billet wheels now...

Get rid of the nose emblem en try a set of blade bumpers, then you have your front exactly like Frenchy's KG.  If you don't like it you can always start completely over again.  ;D

Just to be funny in front of the polish and wax crowd, we did this prior to going hunting for races on Whittier Boulevard. My 2110cc 48IDA car was the one on the right, the 1835 was a younger brothers car. Cruising them without wiping off the polish sure got attention. About 1982. The neighbor guy was like saying, what are you guys going?

Our 3rd car, the Red 1959, 1914cc is below, belonging to my youngest brother sometime in the 1990s

Here is what I am doing with parts and engines from my 1969 Ghia in my Avatar, and my old 1973 Porsche 914 V8 car. So working on one Formula car to get a Porsche 2.4 based engine, and another totally home built to get the old 2110cc from this car, and mostly 914 mechanicals. So the spirit of my Ghia and Porsche will live on, in these race cars.

Well, well, well.  I'm guessing the kid I sold it to ran out of talent somewhere...  Hopefully he took it back to Santini.

I had never seen that picture before.  I didn't even know the car had been crashed.  Picture saved and thank you!

i just pulled the tarp from my 68 vert
had it since 98 and drove it for ten years when i was over to the states. then a rear ender put an end to this. it now rests in my garage for 14 years and counting.
wonder if i will ever get to it...... :'(
