Title: Galassi's Gig
Post by: Sarge on September 12, 2010, 19:08:43 pm
Big thanks to Dave and all who helped with another nice afternoon extravaganza... your great hospitality made all of us feel right at home 8)  As usual, some nice cars, great food and a number of "demonstrations" out front of the shop :o ;D  Some pics....

Dave just scored a SWEET old '62 rag top to add to his fleet.  How about the matching license plates? 8)  I asked Dave about why the front bumper was off the Pepco car and was informed that someone had biffed the front fender in a parking lot.... :(  Dave's double cab ALWAYS looks sweet!

The Mangusta sounded awesome.

Very nice, Sarge. Thanks for sharing. That crew cab Type 2 is really cool. Also dig the '62 license plates and the Bob Bozzani frame.

I'll let Ratto answer that one... I didn't get any details.  Lots of fun hanging out with club brothers today...  ::) ;)

Thanks, Mark!  Well, I saved the best for last.  As you can see, Bill is about to get a drive in a damn cool Nova.  The car is out of Fullerton and the owner drove it to Dave's shop in Irwindale :o  This thing sounded way stout and, had the cops not been nearby, would have put on quite a show.  Very period correct!

Poor William... he must've been SO sad to have to endure something like taking a ride in a full on hot rod.

Somehow, I feel rather confident that he managed to survive that ordeal... and quite well.

Great time as always at Daves.  I'm jealouse of his newly aquired '62 sunroof !!   8) 8)  I did forget my folding rocking chair (this is standard equipement for old guys), but Scott & Dustin were kind enough to retreive it for me.

Regarding our "Imperial", it is actually a 1960 300F coupe.  One of 964 built and in stock configuration it was a 413ci with long ram induction and dual AFB carbs. In stock configuration this package was rated at 375HP with 495 foot pounds of torque at 2800rpm.  Yes, it is a real stump puller.   :o :o :o

We've owned this car going on 25 years and it now has the same block, but it has been taken out to the legendary 426 size and a few other mods that I won't go into.  The trans is the cast iron (weights as much as a beetle) Torqueflite 3 speed, which back int he day was "state of the art".

These cars were not made for quarter mile (4200lbs), but high speed runs.  One was clocked at Daytona on sand at 149mph.  When leaving I did do a launch for the crowd.  It was only a small burnout as I didn't want to leave part of the drive train in the street.  One the way home I did blow by Fab and Carlos on the 605 freeway !   ;) ;)

Big thank you to Dave, as always the best of events, grub, cars and friends. My son had a blast in the jumpy house and watching the Nova on pass. Sarge, thanks for pics and report. These are the kinda days that make a guy happy to be into old cars.

The Mangusta was a treat to see/hear. Very nice example, man could you hear how tall 1st gear was? Beautiful, so much better looking than its successor.

Great stuff Sarge.  What a cool get together, judging by the pics now and last year.

Did Lucas travel in dad's car?   8)

PS
Beautiful, so much better looking than its successor.

Agree wholeheartedly.  I got the chance to see one almost 10 years ago at an automotive design event featuring Guigaro's work.  Lovely cars.

Hi Mike, no, Mom and Lucas followed Dad in the Honda. Lucas isn't allowed on the street in the '67 just yet......

and no my car still has bumpers hanging all over it.  ;D

Makes lots of sense given the traffic situation in your area.  At least he was out making the scene.  Rock on...

yah but I have a feeling VW bumpers are about as worthy as masking tape applied across the nose and rear apron 'round here. Lucas is all over the car scene, some of his favorite words are "Ferrari", "race car", "Alfa", "Ford"...not to mention he knows lyrics to about 4 Ramones songs as of yesterday.... "LoBOTOMY!"

back to Dave's event... while cars and coffee and your various VW events bring out the usual stuff (you hit one of each every year, and you've seen "it all"), Dave's gatherings really bring out the off the wall, very interesting stuff that makes you widen your automotive interests. I'm not much of a Detroit iron guy, but seeing that Nova stomping gave me shivers. Bad Ass!

Good to have Dave as my buddy....  we share the same bloodtype:    112 leaded. 8)

Those heads were brainchild of Russ Arao back in early 1970's. I think I had a VOLKSWAGEN GREATS mag at one time that had the write up on them. Russ is still on Lassen St, just around the corner from my office, and still had a set on display last time I was in there. Somewhere I have pics of he rocker gear.  8)

Thanks all.  It was a good time, as it isn't every day you see a real L79 altered wheel base gasser Nova, a Mangusta, A 300F with the "tunnel cram" intakes, a 348 four speed Elky and a VW Hemi engine.  Too bad the Fairlane from last year blew the trans two weeks ago and the Chrysler gasser guys FLAKED.  Must have been scared to show up...............  I wish I could invite the whole lounge.

Kudos and thanks to Augie for driving a Jackson mechanical injected straight axled, high geared, close ratio'd monster from Fullerton.  BIG TIME.  Thanks also to John Lazenby for lightin' the bias plies on that Fcar.  The owner of the Mangusta could not be coaxed into doing the same.  I think he was afraid to twist the Italian frame.

After the party, we went to Irwindale Speedway and caught the races.................skid plate racing and a demo derby.  The derby, believe it or not, was almost won by a 1992 Honda Accord, and the skid plate racing was insane!  There were about 40 cars in the race..............all front drive Pick a Part candidates, with the rear tires removed, the ebrake on and skid plates welded to the bottom of the rear wheels.  The cars couldn't even line up to start because they all kept sliding down the banked track...........At one point in the chaotic race, an Eclipse spun out and the driver started driving it backwards..........and was keeping up with the race!  The tach needle had to be bent over the 9k point, because he had to be doing at least 30MPH in reverse.  Wish I had a video.
