Title: DAS DRAG DAY - WHAT A SHOW!
Post by: Ivan on September 20, 2010, 22:38:31 pm
The DAS Drag Day was a fantastic weekend. Hardcore racing, great people, great beer, great, great, great!
Congratulations to all at DAS - you did a great job. Also Flatline Lowriders for providing the party machine.
Over 900 Kilometres to drive there and back but well worth every one of them.
To be awarded Best Cal Look when there were so many lovely cars at the event was a honour. And what a great award.
Thanks again DAS!

Damned!!! I should have polished those gasburners  ;)

Thanks Ivan for letting me drive your pride and joy. Too bad the steering wheel is on the wrong side!

Ivan, could you share the specs of the engine?

The engine is 2007cc. The case is an AS41. It has a Bugpack 78mm forged crank, Mahle 90.5s. CB 2288 camshaft. CB Straight Cut cam gears, the new CB lightweight lifters, CB VW650 springs. Heads are Street Eliminators (42x37.5). Autocraft 1.4:1 rockers, Berg cho-mo push rods. Berg full-flow, Scat deep sump. Dell O'rto 45 DRLAs. Pheonix 1 5/8th header, Edelbrock muffler. Berg breather. MSD 6-AL ignition and distributor. NOS Thing fanhousing.
A great driver.
Transmission is stock '67 1500 - great for long trips but not for drag racing.

No you should not! They look perfect. Like we discussed - Le Mans spec!  ;)

I hope you had a safe drive back to your new home. If I do not see you before we will meet again at Sandown.

It's OK Ben, you can have a ride any time... But not the type of ride you Brighton boys prefer!  ;)  ;D

So many people wanted to know about the rear tyres at the weekend. So I thought I would share the info.
Some thought they were Firestone Wide Ovals or re-treaded slicks, but no, they are Avon CR6ZZ road legal race tyres.
Not cheap, but the best looking tyre I could find. In my opinion they look perfect for an Old School car, the side walls have the look of a slick, but are far stronger. The tread pattern is great and they GRIP!
They are good for 130 mph but, have a very limited life - Avon say 757 miles or 470 kilometres (but obviously this is the wrong way around). My tyres came from a historic circuit car and were already 'used', I  have done another 1000 miles (1600 kms) on them and they still have a lot of tread.

See more here;

I hope this helps those who wanted to know.

I noticed and recognized your rear tyres. First I saw them in the flesh and reading about them on the longstone website. They look ace!
How come you're proving Avon wrong on their suggested life? Is it due to the relative lightness of our cars?
I suppose they are more akin to a circuit slick than a drag slick, though?
Any idea as to their grip in the wet?

I think they would wear out MUCH faster on a circuit situation as the tread area is soft. When I got them they were very uneven from hard cornering. By the time I got to Bitburg they were nearly level.
It rained on the drive to the show on Thursday night along the E42 from St Vith to Bitburg and they were fine, the fact I had not driven the car since January and forgot to put air in the washer bottle  ::) was a much bigger problem... I could not see much!  :o
I won't drive the car often in the rain - so the tyres would not be an issue. The air in washer bottle is though!  ;)

Oh, also - how cool is your car?!!!!!!!
 I love it!

Cheers Ivan, as Sarge would say, beer's on me next time  ;D

Those tyres are cool, and I don't think I'd wear out a set of proper tyres quickly.
I did notice that they don't quite adhere to the actual diameters as the 155r15 to 185/70/15 are all 635 in diameter  :-\

I never cared much for the washer bottle, last week I had a short circuit in my wipers as the heavens broke loose, I felt like Ace Ventura if you know what I mean  :D ;)

what is the average time that other tyres wear out? i think less than 2000k is awefully quickly!

what is the diameter of 155r15 and 185/70/15 tyres?
