Title: Dual QP merged muffler
Post by: Jeff68 on October 04, 2010, 17:32:40 pm
I have a Berg 933S 1 5/8 header and I want to put a dual quiet pack muffler on it, (I have a dynomax on it now) but of course can't find one.  I heard rumor that KYMCO sells a dual QP muffler for merged headers.  Is this true?  Has anyone bought one and used it?  If so, does it fit properly , and what does it sound like?   Any other companies selling these?

I had A1 make me one and it doesn't fit properly.  It's already coated and the way the "Y" section of the muffler is welded to the flange in such a way that I don't think i could modify it to fit.  I really don't want to modify the Berg header collector either.  A1 has offered to modify the header / muffler (if i send everything to them) but by the time i pay for shipping (I live in Florida)  and labor it may be cheaper for me to just buy another dual QP muffler.  I don't like the way the Bugpack dual QP's sound.  I'm tired of the "Phat boy" type muffler! >:(

Scat sells them also, I bought it this year but I bought the header and muffs together, not sure if it would fit yours, I could send a pic if you would like. I have a nice 1776 and it sounds good with the muffs. What o'clock position is the top hole in your header?

Here is a pic of my Scat system I bought, could also send a pic with it on the car if you would like.

I got a pair of muffs from CB Performance.  Can't imagine there are too many different shops making them these days, so the ones I have are probably real similar to some others out there.  Here's a pic of them on my 1-5/8" Berg exhaust.

The Berg GB-971A-2M does fit like a glove.

Thanks Larry S - The top hole in the header collector is at 1:00 o clock.  I can't tell from your picture if the top hole on the Scat muffler is at 1:00 or not.  Also, the collector on my Berg Header is angled down.  In other words the collector flange is not vertical or perpendicular to the ground.  Some of the dual QP mufflers are made for a collector that is vertical and this is where most of the fitment problem is.  Is the Scat collector flange vertical?

Javabug - So the CB Dual QP muffler fits the Berg 1 5/8 header?  Is your header the 933S header with a merged collector?  Did you have to modify the header collector or flange of the muffler at all?  This would be great if it fit without modification.

Yes Glenn, I know it fits like a glove, like everything else the Bergs make!  Now if i could only find one of the GB-971A-2M !  I missed getting one a while back from someone in New Jersey, I didn't realize he PM'd me with a message saying that he would sell it to me.  DAMN!

Thanks again guys

Hey Jeff, here's my disclaimer:  I bought my header used, advertised as a Berg 933S.  I don't see any indication otherwise by comparing it to pics of Berg's units.

Having said that...

My header flange seems similar to yours, angled down, and maybe slightly towards the passenger side.  These mufflers bolt up to the header no problem, but they do sit slightly crooked.  You can see it somewhat in the pic posted.  I intend to cut the flange off my muffs and straighten it out to fit nicer.  There doesn't appear to be any reason to modify the header, only these muffs.

Java - The flange on my Berg header is exactly as you're describing it - Angled down, and slightly toward the passenger side rear of the car, with the top hole at approximately 1:00 o'clock.  My header was new when I got it and has never been modified.  You can kind of see the angle in Glenn's picture in this post.  The reason why the A1 dual QP doesn't fit (hits the bottom of the fender on the drivers side) is because the collector is angled down and to the passenger side.  Looking at the picture of the rear of your car I see that it does sit slightly crooked.

Is the CB muffler quieter than one of the "phat boy style mufflers?  If so, I might buy one, modify it to fit better, and then have it coated.  Nothing is easy.......

I would definitely say these mufflers are quiet.  Much more carb and valvetrain noise can be heard than exhaust.  I'll be pretty happy with them after I get to tweak them to my liking.

Nothing is easy, but in some cases I don't mind a little extra effort to get things "right" and set yourself apart from the catalog jockeys.

Good, I'm glad they're quiet.  The Dynomax on my car right now is very loud.  Yeah, I'll tweak them to get them to fit properly as well.  Usually "one size fits all" type stuff never fits properly.
Thanks again.
Jeff

The Berg header was made by Phoenix, so if it fits Phoenix, it will fit the Berg.

The Scat collector is vertical not angled down.
