Let's just say there wasn't a lot of pavement other then the "track".....the road from the "main gate" to the parking area and pits was a mile long rutted out dirt one-laner. Just something about taking a clean car there.... One year we had the races there (DKP Drag Day) and were allowed to spend the night in the pits. It was plenty cold and tough to try and sleep. The next morning, several of us club guys were up at the main gate BSing....everyone freezing. Well, we lit a trash can on fire and started warming up until the trash burn't up....what to do? There was an old wooden Carlsbad sign laying off to the side in the weeds...soon, the fire was crackling plenty good! About this time, Larry Grismer (the guy who ran the show at the track for years) pulls up in his truck and comes over to warm his hands a bit.
