does anyone now if a golf 1 GTI steering wheel (3 spoke version) fits on the steering column from a mexican beetle?

It should.  They fit the 73+ stuff, as far as I know.

Yes this model from 76 to 80 GTI fit VWs with "small diameter" steering column : from 1303 to early Golf Mk2. It looks good on plastic dash pad beetles. I'm not sure but I guess mexican beetles with ball joint front axle have the small steering column too. Don't know if you can find one easily in the US though, I can measure the diameter of the mounting for you if you want to be sure it fits.

thanks! I saw some of those when building up the oldtimer show of highstreet. we're gonna be there tomorrow, I'll see what the price is. ;)

Sometimes people ask crazy prices for this, saying this is very rare (I saw some at 200€ :o). You are in Belgium, they often pop on internet between 100 and 150€, be patient and you may find one for a decent price. I bought mine 30€ but it was almost 7 years ago.  ::)
Try ebay, leboncoin.fr, kapaza.be...
