Title: Some questions regarding OG EMPI 5-spokes
Post by: SplitMan on November 02, 2010, 11:35:43 am
Dears Sirs,
I know there is a few threads on this topic and I have tried to search a little, but can't seem to find it all. I need some proper restoration-info for a nice set of original 2-piece 5-spokes:

- What is the RAL code for the original grey color(s) that they were sold in?
(I beleive there was one or two colors...was it different on 1st gen vs 2nd gen?)

- The original center-caps....alu or plastic? What height/depth? Best source for repros?

- The orange stickers....who sells the best repros?

Thank you in forehand!

As far as I know, center caps are made of plastic.
American Racing center caps looks quite similar but not exactly.

Java JGE sell a good repro of the red/orange center caps stickers.

I have one centre cap, and yes they're definitely plastic. Would you like me to get you some dimensions etc?

danny: Thanks for posting the picture! Was this light grey the only original color, or was there an option with a darker grey?

kaferboy: Yes, please...it would be great if you could measure the height/depth of your cap. I see American Racing have good new ones in plastic with a bolt-circle that suits, but there are deffernet depths/heights.

Thanks a lot both of you.

Surely somebody must have restored and researched these and could advise on the RAL-code..

1st generation wheels had a squared off spoke where it meets the back half, where it always cracks. 2nd generation wheels have that area radiused in a half moon as well as radiused on the back half tabs.. They actually had these wheels for 356, as well, with countersunk areas for the bolts on the back half, shorter studs, and low profile nylocks,( the version I owned ). They also had a bus version with beefier back halves.

Yep, that's how I remember them being. Except I didn't know about the Bus ones. Mine were obviously the early ones. Had to periodically blast the spokes to hide the cracks towards the backs. That and brake cleaner would make 'em just about invisible.

I was told the " late version" was the last year of production of the wheel.

hey, 5 spokes should work on a type3. aftermarket work and they are (if they are the same as original 8 spokes) 1/4 inch slimmer as aftermarket ones.

aftermarkets are like +20 or +25, it doesn't have something to do with the weidth of the wheels...  :-\
