Title: Another 67-built
Post by: Wunder Wim on November 21, 2010, 09:40:57 am
Hello everyone,
just wanted to share some pictures of the new project I started.
The story behind the car is way to long but anyway: I started the work on this 67 about ten years ago. It was to be a present from my dad to my mom, but a lot of things happened lately, so I got the car.
Now about the car itself: body was partly sandblasted and welded up as factory specs, the floorpan and all the bolt on parts were also sandblasted and painted. Every bolt, nut and washer was sandblasted and cadnium plated or seomething like that.
But now I'll the pictures speak for themselves:

Here some  pictures of the parts that came with he car:

I know some of you won't consider it to be a Cal Looker because of the chroom trim, but I'm keeping it. It will be some kind of DKP III -style car.
Regards Wim.

Wim, first off... beautiful looking car. Second, worry not what people say/think about retaining the factory trim and what's Cal Look or not. Third, you've already answered your post in the above sentence. 'Cause D.K.P. accepts Cal Look cars only. Have fun building your Cal Looker and we're looking forward to seeing more updated pictures of it.

Hi Felix,
don't want to go in this subject to much, but just wanted to say that my dad 'had' a good taste. He past away way to early, so this ride will be some kind of tribute to him.

The plans for the motor: something around 2100cc, fuel injected and most of all driveble for the street. I plan to use it as much as I can...

Just time for a little update:
The stock parts of the electrics are almost done. Everything is connected and instead of putting in a new loom, I decided to give it a littel bit of a clean up. Guess it came out ok.

And this is how it all looks under the hood.

One door is allmost done, just waiting for some parts to replace the rubbers of the quaterlights.

And just one shot from under the fuelcell. Some parts will be changed or added (dual master cilinder and a line-lock).

Thursday will be a fine day as I'm expecting some parts to be delivered but I'll keep you updated

Time for an update:
most of the parts for the interior have arrived so I got started with it. Still a lot to do but here's a preview...

The front of the car is almost finished: wings are bolted on using stainless steel bolts and washers, wingbeading is mounted as are the indicatorss with clear Hella lenses.

Next on is the rearend with all red lenses (just prefer the one color look)

just a thought, but why not opt for a smaller inlet valve with the fk7? if not mistaken i think you are after torque and a smaller fastfollowing inlet just will fit this idea better IMHO...

otherwise this car looks really nice. the Wunderyearclub is coming out with some nice machinery it seems...

Just wanted to share some more pictures/ Not a lot of updates on the car.
Today I pushed her out of the garage so she could bathe in the sun. The color comes out lovely I think.
Now the garage is empty as the car is brought away to fit the headliner.
In this picture you can see the Cosmic cruiser pedal (which was bought here at the lounge) that was a bitch to get right but the result makes it worthwhile...

Tomorrow is going to be a very nice day, the new wheels are coming in. But tomorrow more about this...

Awesome "Sleeper" Wim ! Keep us (me) updated about the CB Quicktune EFI !

Hi Harry,
thanks for the support.
CB Quick tune is about to arrive in April, but it won't be for EBI to get it installed (have to build the engine first). But I'll keep you updated. Hope to get the engine (2165), gearbox and EFI installed by DDD.
If I make EBI, it will be with a temperary small 1500 engine with dual port heads and IDF 36's.

So as promised, some pictures of the wheels that have arrived yesterday.
Get ready for some wheelporn:

I started to clean up the seats and doorpanels. You can see the difference between the clean seat and the not cleaned yet seat.

Also cleaned up a doorpanel. Looks good for over 40 year old interior.

Next on was give the frontbeam a coat of paint:

So that's it for now. See you back soon for more updates.

Hi Christoph,

I've used a steam cleaner I bought very cheap (Belgian readers should read this as 'in den Aldi') to clean the doorpanels and seats.

Time for a little update.
I've wired in some more electrics for the gauges and line-lock. I also re-detailled some parts because I wasn't happy with the finish.

Finished of the front with narrowed beam, Koni shocks and steering damper, CB dropped spindles and disk brakes.

Couldn't resist and fitted up the wheels, just need to detail them and fit the tires.

Rear end was stiffen up with torque bar, gear box mount and also Koni shocks.

Well as for the motor, first of all I want to finish the car in and out (still got a lot to do I think)
Then I'll put a small temporary 1600 cc engine with 36 IDF in to the take it to the technical control (they don't like big EFI engines that much).
The plan is to build the 2165 (and gearbox) over the winter so I can put it all in by the beginning of next Aircooled season. Hope it all works out like that.
Anyway I'll be a very happy men when I get to take it out for a ride with the small or big engine.

very nice car alleready!

as for the big engine. it could work. i just had my fastback inspected and guess what... it passed without a hitch.amazing after all i have been through. the guy was looking ofr a really, really long time at the engine when it was on the bridge... but he didn't say a thing.
of course when i left i had the carbs bark a bit  ;D i couldn't resist, i was too happy with the greencrad

If just wanted to ask you guys a question:
for 1600 I have to choice of a pair of rebuild 36 IDF's or a nice pair (actually 2 pairs) of 36 DRLA's (one pair are 36D, the others 36S).
Which of these carbs are better for the small 1600 engine?
And if I take the DRLA's, what's the difference between the 36D's and the 36S's?

Thanks
Wim

I would choose the Dells. They flow a little bit more than the IDF, and they have the idle jets on top, not on the sides! I don't know what the difference is between the D and the S.

GREAT BUILD... Dig the color, red interior, wheel choice, fuel inj , headlights AND the choice of leaving side trim.  A very classic 67 looker.  As mark says it's your car, build it YOUR way.. I think your k7 cam choice is fine, I sometimes miss my engle 110 cam motor vs fk46 in a street car. Your car with all the detail work is awesome. enjoy... bill

Time for another updated:

while waiting for some gearbox parts, I started on the interior:
fitted the sunvisors, doorpulls, glovebox doorpull, carpets and the seatbelts.

For the exterior, I fitted the bumpers.

And made some hardlines from the brakefluid reservoir to the mastercilinder.

great progress...

just a note, you may want to get the proper Blue Brake Fluid hoses to replace those hoses you using now, i never had luck with them

Hi pupjoint

the brake fluid hoses are actually the blue ones, just the outher skin is grey. I think it looks better like this, don't like blue hoses on my ride...

Hi Karl
I didn't fix the harnesses to the floor, I attached them to the body near the OG seatbelt points.  I'll take some pictures tomorrow to show you how I have fixed them.

@ Karl and Danol: here are some pictures of the fxing points for the harnesses I've made. They are made from 5mm thich steel plates with a nut welded to them and secured the bolts with an extra locking nut.

In the meantime, I've made some progress to the interior.
Fitted up my doorpanel and did some things to the dashboard.

Also finished the gearbox with a GB Poor Mans Posi and mounted it back in the car.

And while detailing the Flat Fuchs for the bus, I've started detailing one of the Gasburners for the 67. I'm very happy with how the look alltough they are not finished yet.

Must say I'm very pleased with the fit of the engine so far but it needs some adjustmenst to get it fitting better. The collector sits against the rear apron, some it needs some work.

Great looking 67!

Just a question, I'm in the process of fitting a CSP Torque Bar to my 67.
Just realized i need to cut the body inside the mounting point at the shock absorber on both sides to fit the kit.

Do you have any pics showing how you made the installation and solved this issue?

I did have to cut a little piece out of the body. I'll try to take some pictures and post them on here.

Progress is a little slow 'cause a lot of little things seem the take ages to get them right.
The previous days, I made some changes to the exhaust so it won't hit against the rear apron. The fit is very good now.
I also made some brackets out of alu for the muffler.

I've allready had of lot dates set in my mind but I always failed to get the car ready, so I don't set myself a date anymore. I try to do als much as possible but I don't want to hurry into it. I just want to finish it to a high standard. We'll see when it's finished.

Thanks for the comments. I'm glad you all like the effort I've put into the build.

As the sun was out all day, I've pushed the 67 out to see how things looked outside in the sun. Guess it's better to let the pictures speak:

I do have a question for all of you: someone told me that I could run into problems with mounting the MSD-coil upside down. He told me they leak when mounted like that. Can anyone help me out here?

And another question about the seal for the sunroof:

Should I glue it in place like this or should it be the other way around?

The sunroof seal should be flush with the roof, not above it.

Looking good :)

hi Cedric,
I indeed swapped the 67 axles for pre 67 axles as I thought the tire would stick out of the fenders. Now the rear ends is a little too narrow so I'm thinking of fitting some spacers.

Haven't done a lot lately, been busy with other things.
Did raise the front a little and added some more details.
Just some pictures of the new stance

Got the engine started after some ignition problems.
Obviously, a Compu Fire electronic ignition can't live with a MSD blaster coil. I dind't have any ignition with this combo.
So I replaced the Compu Fire with points. I had ignition. The engine run like this but suddenly stopped. The MSD coil had burned the points. So now it's running on a blue coil with points ade it runs just fine.
The engine as it is: 1600 dp with lighter flywheel and Dellorto 36's.
Might have to change the jetting a bit but the AFR-monitor will tell.

So, this is how my 67 looks right now.
Got the license plates today so it's ready to hit the streets.

Keep an eye on the Ramflo filters, sometimes the foam falls to bits into the carbs, messy. They sound great though!
