It's a long time since I started this Topic but I want to try to get some more info this time.

Why is it so few that is using longer 1. and 2. gears in stead of short 3. and 4.

Is this only because of the price, or is it a bad thing in a VW with long 1. and 2.???

I Just took a look at Doodah's Box and compared it with Ole's.

I can se that Ole's is Absolutely Race only, Doodah's is a little more town driveable, but not much.

What about Longer 1. and 2. and leave 3. and 4.???

Then you have more power on 1. and 2. and a more driveable 4. ???

Have any of you tried this?

A novice question here... What cruising speeds/rpms do you have on the highway with the 1.21 4th gear Frank? What R&P are you using? 3.88? Would you say it is streetable?

I don't know what it would make on the Motorway, as my Car is illegal to drive on the Streets here in Luxembourg... :'( :'( :'(

Yes, it's a 3.88 R&P

But Yes, it is still Streetable...

I dont remember were the link is but there is several websites were you can calculate what speed you will have at a given rpm if you now the tire size, R&P and gear ratio. I think its a equation in a volksworld magazine from around 1997 with a yellow car with green stripes on the cover. Maybe someone here on the lounge can help you finding one of the links Rune.

Heres a good one http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/calculator.html (http://www.xse.com/leres/ss/calculator.html)

To use it, you'll need to know the tire height which you can calculate here. http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi (http://www.powerdog.com/tiresize.cgi)

Late VW OE  mexi case - gusseted
3.88 r/p
4.11, 2.47,1.72, 1.31
NO need for aluminum HD side covers
SAW axles
Quaife dif

For the city this gearbox works great. For the freeway you'll hate it.

My other trans I grenaded last year was a
gusseted late Vw case with release bearing guide
4.12 r/p Ottinger
Stock VW OE 9 tooth mainshaft with 091 1st gear bus idler
1.56, 1.22
stock sidecovers
Saw axles
10/15 tooth super diff

Thats a budget trans that is real tight in 3rd and 4th. Not fun on the freeway.

I found this one: http://www.fatboyraceworks.com/gears/index.php?MaxRPM=7000&TireDiameter=25.75&GearRatio1=3.55&GearRatio2=2.35&GearRatio3=1.65&GearRatio4=1.15&GearRatio5=&GearRatio6=&FinalDrive=3.875&TireWidth=195&TireAspect=70&RimDiameter=15&MaxRPM_2=7000&TireDiameter_2=25.75&GearRatio1_2=3.78&GearRatio2_2=2.06&GearRatio3_2=1.26&GearRatio4_2=0.93&GearRatio5_2=&GearRatio6_2=&FinalDrive_2=3.875&TireWidth_2=195&TireAspect_2=70&RimDiameter_2=15&Calculate=Calculate%2FGraph&Compare=1
I allready put in some typical VW Ratios on the right!

Look at " for sale " here in the forum .That's a real good one , all FTC gears , but not for street use because of the spool .
