Title: Hex head oil pressure and control relief plugs...washer or no?
Post by: bugnut68 on January 25, 2011, 00:49:19 am
I bought a pair of hex-key oil pressure relief and control plugs for my new engine build, but they didn't come with any washers...got 'em from CB Performance.  Do they go with a washer or no?

you definitly require the sealing washer between the plug and the case or else it will leak oil
it takes stock Vw units

Use the crush washer.

I figured that was probably the case.... Grrr.    >:(  It's a bit frustrating when I order parts such as this and don't get such rudimentary related hardware with them.  It's a good thing I had an Elring/German gasket set that included doghouse oil cooler seals, as the oil cooler I bought (and stand) had only the hardware to bolt it on/together, but no seals whatsoever.

If I still lived in an area where VW parts were available locally, I wouldn't be frustrated.  Wouldn't be an issue to tool on down and get what I need, but living here in rural southeastern Oregon it's a little less than pleasing to buy parts and not have such basic hardware with them.  Shipping is a bit pricey for such lightweight and rudimentary hardware.

I'm fairly certain that the gasket set didn't have these crush washers included.  Looks like I'm not done mail ordering parts yet.  ::)

Anybody have a VW part number for that washer?  I could not find any in my gasket set at last check, and need to hunt a pair down.

The oil gallery temperature sending unit I got for my temp gauge also came with nothing... ???  I don't understand why these parts don't come with the needed hardware for installation.  It would be like selling oil change gasket sets with only gaskets and no copper washers...lol.  Maybe not the best analogy, but it's the best I could do on the spot. ;D

Think I've tracked down what I need, now to find out if I can get it locally.  Lol.

Found this, also: http://www.pacificcustoms.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PC&Product_Code=AC101015&Category_Code=

Looks like I should have done a bit more research... apparently there ARE vendors out there who outfit their parts with all the needed hardware.  ::)  Good to know for the future.

Question, though, do I use the same type of crush washer for an oil gallery temperature sending unit, or should I use a different type of washer?

Irony...lol.  I may be lucky in this instance, and may be able to purchase the crush washers locally at the limited hardware resources I have here in this tiny cow town I call home.  I'm going to start working on stocking up needed hardware/seals/yada/yada/yada for future engine builds so I will always have a quantity of some of these items on hand for future engine builds.

I  just came to realize recently that there are two different engine gasket sets available, one of which has the main seal included... live and learn!  Apparently, I was NOT crazy in thinking that such a thing existed. ;D
