Title: GAS BURNER WHEEL REFURB
Post by: Straight Time on April 05, 2007, 11:47:20 am
Hi , anyone ever restored a set of origional Gas burner wheels ? Need some advice. Looking to get them back to standard finish.

What is best to strip old paint off ?  Nitromors or is this too harsh ?

Would you advise painting the back of the rim and the inside ?

What type of paint to get that OG Finish ?

I also have a Porsche space saver wheel  which is 5.5j x 15, ET 33. Anyone know if this is the same stud patern as the gasburners. It does have 5 bolt holes ?

One last thing, need a set of center caps .... Anyone have some for sale or know who sells them for the burners .

Many thanks guys. ;)

I've done a few sets, and the SAFE way to strip them is media blasting (walnut shell or baking soda).  Many chemicals have bad reactions with magnesium, and will distort or eat at the wheel.

If you only want to do this one time (hint) , primer and paint the entire wheel to completely seal it.  If you don't, the mag will gas-off and you will have bubbles and holes that will start to form under the paint after time, especially in damp climates.

The wheels were originally a semi-gloss silver that Porsche has in their color charts from 1971.  Many powdercoaters have similar colors.

Your space saver should be a 5 X 130mm pattern too.

The center caps are the early Porsche 3-prong style, just like the Fuchs use.  They are listed on e-bay all the time, or new ones at www.performanceproducts.com under Porsche parts.

Hope this helps, good luck !

I have mine blastet, then polised and finaly paint semi gloss paint, I also paint the inner(back) all black.
After a month they look dull, and to keep them bright is impossible, but I can live with that.....

I actually think the "semi-bright" finish is very cool.
