Title: Re: EMPI Sportster Post by: Zach Gomulka on January 28, 2011, 23:44:50 pm A buddy of mine has one, he lives right around the corner from me. I'm sure he'd sell it if anyone was interested... He also has the plans, etc. Years ago at the VW shop I now work next door to, there was a Sportster sitting out back with a 40hp Okrasa motor, single Zenith, etc. I thought it was pretty cool at the time, but I didn't really know what it was all about!

Title: Re: EMPI Sportster Post by: . on January 29, 2011, 03:28:48 am The problem with Sportsers is that Empi also sold plans to "build your own".
So 99% of Sportsters I have seen are of that variety. The only collectable ones are either the "turnkey" units built at Empi's facility, or the kits built with the Empi supplied parts. It can sometimes be very difficult to discern. Title: Re: EMPI Sportster Post by: Lee.C on January 29, 2011, 04:03:05 am The problem with Sportsers is that Empi also sold plans to "build your own". Dam Right - I would KILL for a factory built Sportster, on a nice set of Gates Commando tires - HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM ;D Title: Re: EMPI Sportster Post by: deano on January 29, 2011, 04:05:38 am The feature that Hot Rod Magazine did on the Empi Sportster has an interesting back story. I was talking with Steve Lewis one day, and he told me that he and Darrell, completely pre-assembled an entire Sportster in their garage the day before Eric Rickman from Hot Rod would show up. All the bolts were sorted out, the holes were drilled, and all the parts were located. Once the car was done, they then, tore it back apart, carefully, and lay it out on the front lawn and driveway, like it never been together before. When Eric showed up the following morning, he then watched in amazement, the took photos of Darrell and Steve blow through the complete assembly in only a few hours.... Wow, anyone could do it, with simple tools and a few hours... Right.
Title: Re: EMPI Sportster Post by: Lids on January 29, 2011, 09:01:48 am I have a pdf copy of the plans, and anybody that can build a buggy, i.e. shorten a frame and cut sheet metal and bend, could build one. So I am tempted to go down this route, just for something to do.
If you bought a sportster kit, did it come painted, or was it it up to you. Interested to know if there are any colour charts etc. (Like the IMP). How can you tell if they are factory supplied or hand built? Have seen a few adds on the samba, ranging in cost from $600 to $4000, obviously some need more work than others. Title: Re: EMPI Sportster Post by: speedwell on January 29, 2011, 10:37:04 am i remember that paintbox built their own sporster in the late 90's and was featured in volksworld , it was a four seater and it was orange with white stripe

I was given a copy of the plans for the two seater years ago, and I scanned them and posted them on my Imp web site in PDF form. I'd like to post the plans for the four seater too. :) Tuna Title: Re: EMPI Sportster Post by: Lids on January 29, 2011, 19:32:01 pm I have a pdf copy of the plans, and anybody that can build a buggy, Do you have the plans for the two-seater or the four seater?
