Post by: leec on February 06, 2011, 23:19:03 pm
Hi,

Got a new set of Scat H Beams in 5.7 inch length and want to build a new motor using them (well start part collecting!!)

Any spec suggestions/proven combinations? Turbo or n/a!!

Street or track?

Occassional street use, with a bit of racing.

I have run 5.7" rods with 86 mm stroke on the street and strip.
Use pistons with a higher wrist pin like the JPM and you won't have any problems with an engine that gets very wide.

sounds like a good suggestion? (http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,15077.msg221308.html#msg221308)

I was going to run 5.7 rods on my engine, but it was decided that we might have to go and get a flanged crank to ensure it all stayed together.  So i didn't bother, i dropped down from 86 to 84 and rod length 5.5

My rods are vw journal, which through my research rules out an 86mm crank.

Could I run these rods with a 78 or 82mm crank and maybe long barrells?

Want to use a vw case. Have an FK87 on the shelf too.

Any thoughts?

I have 5"7 rods in mine engine  84mm crank .
It ended up being real wide, I had to section the
side trays in the engine bay (oval bug)
and add metal on the cylinder tins because there was
1/2" gaps .
I didn't use pistons with a higher wrist pin  ;)

why not sell what you have and buy what you need? it seems to me that it is more trouble to make them fit, then to buy the right part... allthough what is suggested will probally work as well

Usually I plan out my builds before I start and select the rods for the best fit. The wider the engine the more problems, sheet metal  ect...   If you do sell your rods and want an alternative look at these,

I think these are a good buy for the money @  $ 115.00 set,  I plan on using a set in a new turbo engine I am putting together. Another good buy is their valve covers at less than 40.00 .

I am using 5.7 Ali rods in my 86x101.6 engine. There is a picture of them in the thread about Bugpack race cases.
