Title: Berg allenhead valve adjusters question...
Post by: bugnut68 on February 08, 2011, 18:33:06 pm
After making another set of pushrods for my 2017 build, I have a question regarding Berg allenhead valve adjusters, swivel foot style (911 elephant foot type).  What often causes these to break?  I read in the instruction book about backing them out into the rocker and over-torqueing them are a couple primary causes, but I am just wondering what other folks' experience have been with these.  The instructions indicate using shims behind the rocker stands, and that there should be 1-1/2 to 2-1/4 threads showing beyond the jamb nut, but this doesn't seem to be the case with my set-up.  No shims are necessary, I have geometry spot on at half lift, and I have a partial thread showing beyond the jamb nut cinched down.
Just curious as to others' experiences...

I have a set on my 1776cc motor with no problems, used them for years. I try to keep equal amount of threads on both sides, for adjustment. Shims, if you need them to get the right geometry. If ya got right! Run it! You'll be fine. Make sure you soak the adjusters in oil before install, a must.

Thanks, Ted, yeah, I definitely planned to soak them in oil overnight or for several hours at least before firing the engine (along with the liberal amount of oiling just prior to firing).  I figured I was okay, as everything has come out even... and I'm no gorilla when it comes to tightening the jamb nut! ;D

I put over 100k miles on my 1776 before selling it to a friend.  All those miles with just one set.  Never had a problem with them.

If you have set the rockers right i would say they are unbreakable .
