Title: The thread about BOSCH Distributors
Post by: SplitMan on April 09, 2007, 20:07:13 pm
This thread might not belong in the Cal Look-room, but yet it is not "pure racing either".. so here it goes..

Who knows all about the old, original BOSCH distributors? What and where are the best resources on the net for the curves and ins and outs of the different models and numbers?

For example:
- When is the 009 the best one to use?
- "What" is it about the 010 .. ? ... why, and on what is it so great and on what was it originally fitted?
- My real urgent question is: On my late 356-engine (105 hp) I have the original 022 distributor. Is it good and the best for this motor? (stock, but with 86 mm barrels) Is it worth rebuilding? or should I go out and buy another one for even more durability and/or performance?

Hey Øystein.
When it comes to early Bosch distributors one name comes to mind right away. Glenn Ring. http://www.glenn-ring.com/  Send him an e-mail and he'll answer all your questions and then some...

The 010 distributor has a better advance curve than the 009. The 010 has 20* advance @ 2500rpm
The 010 was originally used on early type 2s. Around 1960 I think..

The 050 has aproximately 27 degree advance. On my current 2332 I run aproximately 2 degrees BASE timing. I guess if your concerned with cleaner emissions the lower base timing should have cleaner HC, CO readings.

I just use a petronix unit int the 050.  Issues with the 050 is that its not that easy to find a cap and rotor. The 050 was the "upgraded" distributor to get with the old 4banger porsche engines.

I'll be purchasing a Mallory Unilite (no vac advance)soon.  The great thing about the Mallory is that you can use whatever base timing you want and you can full adjust the total advance desired. Larger cap will have less ionization problems like a smaller cap bosch.
