Title: 1966 old school cal looker
Post by: beetletom on February 18, 2011, 18:58:27 pm
ok, had my 66 bug repainted and built a resto cal, and was happy how it was...

...untill a woman decided, that a ford fiesta shaped dent down the near side would look better  :o  >:(
destroyed the original vw wings! door, pushed in the front and rear 1/4 too :(

currently going through getting it repaired, but in the meantime i saw a 63 bug on ebay, which had all the bits, which i was going to buy for my 66 anyway

1641 on twin 40 dellortos, 100 cam, full flowed, merged stainless turbo muffler, its quick!!! and my first hot motor too
got in contact with the guy who built the car, and it did a 16.9 run at santa pod
gt gearbox
autometer gauges
rhd locking berg, etc....
huge stereo :D
moto lita
stainless bumpers!

sadly it has a bit of gutter rot and welding in all the usual places, i will drive this about till my 66 is done, and swap all the bits over eventually!
and maybe do the 63 once the 66 has been done

the plan for the 66 is to go old school cal look, keep the trim... remove the bolt on resto cal stuff
raise the rear end back to stock, swap all the parts over, go with the empi's or go for some bbt sprintstars, might even get another pair of 5.5 wide 66 steels for the rear

maybe a repaint in porsche sepia brown too!

will add pics when work happens

a 4" narrowed beam on an old school cal looker?

looks like you put a lot of time in that chassis!

Title: Re: 1966 old school cal looker
Post by: beetletom on March 26, 2012, 15:59:00 pm
yep, a bit narrow, but have put into account stuff like the dropped spindles, discs and adaptors i'll have to run for the sprintstars

i had a 3" beam on the top pic, and the wheels sat close to the wing lips, so maybe the 4" beam will have a similar look, only a bit more tucked

i didn't restore the pan, only took it apart (and will be putting it back together!)

cheers!
wanted the car to look sort of stock on the outside, as was too original to dechrome (but gaping holes have been cut to fit hi-pacs lol!)

67 is coming along well. Rear body mounts all repaired and one front inner wing done. Just the other front inner wing and all welding complete. Should be done by x-mass all being well. Although ive just bought a 67 1500 with steel sliding sunroof that may distract me for a while...... ;D

got it back from electrics yesterday morning  ;D
all lights work! and starter turns over too.

just tinware to get painted, then the engine can be ran and then fitted!

any ideas if a berg linkage would work with dellorto's?

If they're DRLAs it's the same setup as IDFs, looking good Tom ;D

gone for 145 firestones upfront and 165's on the back

spent the last few days cleaning up the original interior, hope its good enough!?!
there are no rips, but over 40 years of stains....  :D

Looking good.

. . the 135 /165 combo may have been the norm in the eighties.. but a 165 will be a bit 'lost' in the rear arches.  Probably not the look you're aiming for (?)

May look a little better once the engines in and the car settles .. But could be bigger

yep haha

sadly back end was a spline down once the engine was in, had no time to sort it
so had to look like a speedboat for the show  :D
