Title: Steering wheels................
Post by: 65bug on April 01, 2011, 22:06:44 pm
Hey guys,
I am going to swap out my original 65 steering wheel for a nice wood one. Something that's solid and does not flex a lot. I was thinking of a new Flat 4 wood wheel. Whats in your car? I would love to see pics of what you have in your cal-look bug. I know The Bug Inn is coming up. Maybe the Flat 4 would be on sale there......... ;)

The Flat Four is just a Grant wheel ;)
Nardi has some nice looking wheels also.

EMPI GT Custom in my GTV:

Flat4 are nice, you would use it with the ISP-West mounting boss.

You can easily find an old Speedwell with its boss for a good price, or a Superior 500.

Nardi are nice looking too, and you can choose the size you like.

Zach,
VERY COOL! I love all the old school stuff. I did not know the flat 4 was a Grant. Thanks for the info. Does grant make their own version thats less money by chance?

Nico,
I like the look of the flat 4. They may not be the nicest but I figured I should not have any problems with cracks or anything vs. purchasing a vintage wheel. I would like something that does not flex a lot like my stock wheel. I am guess the 3 spokes make a large difference over the 2 spoke stock wheels!

AWESOME!!!!! I love all the different steering wheels and dashes!!!! Zach's horn button can double for a airbag!!!!!LOL!!!! Very cool! And I had that Formula France that you have Jason many many years ago! I want to go wood though! Here's a shot of the wheel I will be replacing! I need to get a dash pic too!

Title: Re: Steering wheels................
Post by: TexasTom on April 02, 2011, 15:39:10 pm
Here's mine with the Empi wood wheel, running leather at the moment.
The horn button was missing when I found it, so I made one out of an old wheel center cap to fit a stock horn button ... the search continues for a correct padded piece like Zach's.

The flat 4s are nice, but much lighter weight than the originals ... materials? I bought one for my '67 DD project, but haven't gotten to the point of putting it on.

TexasTom,
Awesome! Very nice! I want to lose my monster tach and get a smaller (LESS NOTICABLE) one! I love the smaller gauges mounted into the dash. Anyone want to trade a really nice tach and maybe some cash for a wheel???? ;D
Hey Tom, how is the economy doing over there in Texas? I am pretty "DONE" with California anymore. They have ran this state into the ground and it's not coming back for a long long time!

I bought a flat 4 wood wheel. I have to say that I am not really that happy with it, but I guess it is a decent piece for the money. I would really like to have it in a much darker stain, not to mention a horn button that isn't a cheap piece of crap! This Porsche wheel I am posting is my "dream wheel" though...too bad they are like $1000 and up for ones that need to be restored!

Nice solid wheel, although I would prefer the small version. I went back to the three spoke wheel

Solid wheel, standard three spoke. feels good and nice size.

FF Banjo Re-pop. Very light flexes a ton, but cool factor is nice.

I like the looks and cleanliness of the FF GT Repop, but there will be considerable flex compared to the original GT. The repop has aluminum spokes the original has Stainless. If you are comparing the flex in a stock wheel, that is.

I like the feel and looks of the Formuling, good size grip.

The Grant GT wheel is a good option too.

Here is a vintage Grant wood rim I picked for 15 USD...
[attachment=1]
A little polish, steel wool and walnut stain brought it back to fair/good condition. Not everyone's taste but it suits me fine for now. They still make them new, but the rims are much thicker and not as attractive IMHO.

I've had wanted ads on several forums for an old Speedwell formula wheel. Any tip on where to look?
Haven't had any sucess yet.

So many options to chose from! I know I want 14-15 inch. But I am not sure about the depth of the wheel itself. I am 6'2 if that means anything to you pro's out there?? Would a flatter wheel be better for me?
Man, you guys have awesome cars! I cannot wait till I get mine painted! So far, I am still thinking Flat 4. But I need to see some wheels in person!

I've got a couple of choices. First, I've got a wheel like Dave Rhodes had in the '64 - a Scat I believe. Dave's was all black whereas mine was tan. Looked a bit odd though so I polished the spokes and dyed the rim and centre grey. I got what I think is a Speedwell off ebay a few years ago, all painted black but will be stripped back before going into the '51, so plenty of time! Then there's a Moto-Lita that I got off Ebay, supposed to be off a '67 but it has a small spline boss so it's for a '74-on. That'll end up on the wife's Mk1 Golf 'vert as I haven't got anything that late! Finally there are a pair of Nardi wheels, one woodrim and one leather wrapped for the wifes Beetle vert and my car. The woodrim needs refinishing and the leather one needs re-covering, but they were both cheap enough and feel nice so I'm happy enough!

I really need to get some pics...

here's mine  ;)

Your's deeper.

Formula have equiped many cars and other stuff...
Simca, Jaguar, Mini, Lotus, VW, ...

There's 3 type of deep for 15" Furmula
(http://images.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/1374971.jpg)
and 2 type in 13"

For the 15", there is 5 kind of finish.

But you're right.
Speedwell chose the deep dish in the Formula collection.
There's too different kind :
The new one with black boss kit, Speedwell horn button and more dark.
The old one in natural finish with silver boss kit and standard bus horn button.

Hey guys,
Yea, thats not a bad looking wheel there on ebay! It would have showed up much better with a solid color background. In stead of butcher block????
I just measured my wheel distance. I measured from the wind shield to the steering wheel back on the top. I got a distance of 3 inches. I never realized the stock wheel was 16 inches in diameter!
Does anyone know how close the Flat 4 wheel is off the wind shield at the top?[attachment=2]

Thanks!

let me to add to the speedwell infos:
although formula wood wheels were made in 3 dish versions only the medium and deep dish were offered for vws. The shallow one not. You can not use it with the original speedwell/formula boss - the wood rim gets too close to the indicator swith. [attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3][attachment=4]

i think my wheel, of which i posted a picture earlier, is the shallow dish formula.

i had a boss custom made by some english guy i met on volksworld show 2007 (i think). at first, the boss wasn't big enough an the wheel was indeed too close to the indicator switch. then, they made me a bigger one and i love the position of the wheel now!

@nico: if you want, i can try to find who made that boss for me. let me know, also if you want more pictures of my boss

Copied these over from another thread.

I hope you'll forgive the repost.

I had a Racemark steering wheel in my '67 for most of it's life then I replaced it with an Empi GT. The wheel was leather wrapped like the first 2 pics but had the later style horn button like the third pic.

Since becoming active again in the VW world and talking about my Butternut '63 one thing that I've continued to look for is another steering wheel like I had.  Brand name as I recall was "Butler" and it was purchased through Auto Haus when I worked there.  We only got about 15 of them in as I recall an I immediately knew it was the wheel for my car.

A wood rim fairly thick and three spokes done in a brushed finished and a slight dish.  The horn button was smooth black in a mat finish and was fairly large in diameter.  See the photo attached as this is similar to what I remember.  The adapter was reasonably long putting the wheel at about the same position as a factory VW wheel of the day.

Since I sold the car back in 1974 I've never seen another.  I've still not located photos of it, but I know they do exist.  Anyway, if anyone has a lead on this I would be very appreciative of assistance.

carlito , not sure than speedwell made some small dish steering wheels
(http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5281/5323530277_50a1348ebd_z.jpg)

i've the same as you and this came from a french car if i remember and those were on boat  ;)
here's mine  ;)

Your's deeper.

Formula have equiped many cars and other stuff...
Simca, Jaguar, Mini, Lotus, VW, ...

There's 3 type of deep for 15" Furmula
(http://images.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/1374971.jpg)
and 2 type in 13"

For the 15", there is 5 kind of finish.

But you're right.
Speedwell chose the deep dish in the Formula collection.
There's too different kind :
The new one with black boss kit, Speedwell horn button and more dark.
The old one in natural finish with silver boss kit and standard bus horn button.

is this the same ?

I would like a Speedwell but I cant find one I can afford!
And I am not sure on the repro ones.
My interior will accept either a woden or black wheel, i am now leaning towards black.
Just found one I quite like its the GT 500 sold by ISP West, any feedback appreciated.

I use this - 1 Grant Nostalgia 15" slotted spokes style. I find it a nice variation on the tradiditional wooden EMPI GT weel, and suits the rest of the interior more, as everything is monochrome..! white car, balck interior with metal accents - works for me!

Moto-Lita Mark 4, 35,5cm/14" diameter, dished around 5cm.
Have another one without dish that I think looks better.

Horn button is a NOS oval batwing button with the original white paint removed.
Had to shave the outer diameter about a tenth of a millimetre to make a snug fit.

My buddy gave me/my car a VDM Coach wheel for her 50th birthday yesterday, and it took all of about half an hour this morning to decide to put it on. I'll be restoring it at some point in the future, but for now, I think I'll rock it as it is. Or maybe I'll get brave and try to leather wrap it.

Restore it in black. Completely changes the look of the wheel.

I will definitely keep that in mind! Right now, I really like the change up from stock black to the nice, light tan. I definitely want to wait and see how hot the wheel gets after sitting in the sun all day before I decide what I want to do with it.

I used a steering wheel from a fiat 850.
bored out the rivets for the stock mount and made an adaptor out of an old (broken) stock steering wheel.
sourced a horn button and flattend out the fiat logo, looks great, should get some foto's of how it looks now..

After seeing Felix/DFL's sweet looking Passat TS steering wheel in this tread I began the hunt for one to fit in my car. After som tip I found on fore sale on "Tradera" (Swedish Ebay) and placed the winning bid, maybe higher than I liked but....  ;D
(https://i.imgur.com/Y5W1Bit.jpg)

I redrilled a Luise hub, blasted and powder coated the hornring and monted the sw with stainless allen bolts.

This is the result in my 71 late looker, when my 67 is done (if it gets done) it will moved there.

That Passat wheel looks great, and you're not likely to see too many others.

Mine is a Nardi - got a woodrim one from an MX-5 to go in my wife's cab (eventually...) but saw this leather one a few years ago at VoWo and couldn't resist it for £25! Ideally needs the leather redoing as it's worn through on one piece.

Just want to share this steering wheel of mine. Got it about 8 years ago and i’m thinking its an Empi GT but doesn’t have the stamp at the back. Came with an original boss kit and black button. The spline is definitely for volkswagen. When i first installed it, i saw the backside of the horn button and it has the wolfburg logo engraved. Maybe anyone has any info regarding this one? Thanks.

The horn button is not a VW modified. Empi offered this rare version. I have one too. It is made exactly as an Empi one.

Different versions were made :
- Black with silver Wolfsburg crest
- Full black. It was the one like yours, with the VW crest, but the plastic used is black, so you can't see any details.

Empi steering wheels were sold via different retailers. Empi of cours, but a bit later by IECO. IECO steering wheels where Empi but they didn't have the Empi logo on them and have the black of VW crest horn buttons.

I just bought the lot of Empi steering wheels from the original manufacturer and I have all the history for this one. I will give more info later.

I’m wondering myself why it has the VW crest underneath the full black logo, and tried to compare the button with other steering wheels but not one looks like it.

I was wondering if any of you guys would be able to lead me down the right path of resins/glues to fill them in? Thanks for any advice!

Hi Andrew,

I´ve repaired 4-5 original steering wheels with a 2-component-kit from Patex.
It worked really well and I think it could work on your steering wheel.
But after some grinding and a bit of filler it needs to be repainted.

I'm tempted by this wheel for the '58.  However I'll need a boss.  Does anyone have the diameter of a Flat4 style boss for a GT or Speedwell wheel so I can decide which will work best?

Can anyone think of any other options?

Also, does anyone know of a boss which covers the end of the column like the standard wheel on the '58?

Thanks Richard, it's a 15'' wheel, same size as Speedwell ones.
The Flat4boss fit perfectly the original speedwell/Formula, I just had to enlarge a bit the 3 fixing holes for the flat4 screws, which are really shitty screws!, if you can choose better quality ones do not hesitate.

Mark 1 Scirocco wheel on my 1977 standard Beetle. Direct bolt-on; no adapters or any other work needed. Wheelskins brand leather wheel wrap. Beetle horn button fits into the "bellows" Scirocco hub with friction fit. I previously had a 1973 SportsBug 3-spoke wheel on this car for 25 years. Both wheels have the same outer diameter, 14 7/8". Porsche 914 tachometer.

Last one slipped thru my hands at Pomona about 9 years ago when my friend tim from Belgium picked it up before I could and got that One for $15 and I believe that it belongs to you now Fabs.

And empi GT

Not wheel related, but where did you get the padded dash top?

It’s a vintage Empi dash pad. If I remember correct from the samba.

Here is my black leather Formula shallow Dish with a Flat4 speedwell boss and a standard bus horn button.
Bought it NOS with his box, quite interesting to see the whole Formula range.

Thought I would include one I'm restoring for my '56. After sitting outside for years, the thing looked like a porcupine from the delaminations. Not sure if it is a Superior or Speedwell?   [attachment=1]

Finally got around to installing the metalflake steering wheel I got last year, no markings on it ,it's probably an early Grant (that's a page from a 1966 Honest Charlie catalog showing the 5 hole spokes

I've read that metalflake gets oxidized with time and needs to be polished to bring back the original color, any thoughts? it might even be blue after all (I bought it because it looked blue in the pictures, turned out to be greenish)

Well, the black I redid my Coach wheel in didn't last, this weekend I spent a few hours redoing it in metalflake red, hopefully a few coats of clear help to keep it in place for a bit longer.
