Title: So what's the agreed lifespan of a Michelin 145?
Post by: TexasTom on April 09, 2011, 03:42:18 am
I have 2 pairs of 145 Michelin XZX fronts ... probably 15+ years old showing some dry cracks but appear still drivable ...
What/Where do YOU limit the lifespan of these fine examples of French rubber rolling stock for your looker?
Keep in mind replacements are $300+/pair!
Sucks to be cheap ...

I ran 135 x 400 Michelin's on my 2CV till a side wall split and the tube protruded...like a giant hemorrhoid  :D

Otherwise the sidewall rubber is there for protection of the carcass and appearance.

I don't know what michelin put in their ruber compound but they seem to last a lot longer than other make's .
I know your not supposed to run tyres over 5 - 7 years old but Ive seen Michelin's 3 to four time's that vintage still looking fresh and new .
My 135's are 12 years old , they were N.O.S. but when fitted the tyre guy's said they were as fresh and flexable as a new pair  8)

The 145's on my Americans were purchased in 1985 and used on my high-school car.  No cracks in the sidewalls...still look perfect. Probably should replace them though  :D   ::)

My point exactly!
Is Coker pretty much the only place to get them anymore???
Since these are off the car, I might pull them from the rims to inspect while I restore the wheels and I'll go from there ... maybe have them MRI'd :D
Thanks! Good to know I'm not the only one ...

TexasTom,
I think alot of it has to do with where you live and if the car is garaged or not. Now if they are not on a car, and stored well I think they could last years and years. In the SoCal desert, the heat/sun will cause them to wear quickly! Just my 2 cents ::) ::) :P
