Title: Getting Ready to mount my IDAs and fire the new motor...
Post by: rick m on April 11, 2011, 01:51:53 am
Finished up some wire runs on the chop top this weekend, got the BERG linkage on, new 5/16 fuel line, fuel pressure gauge , removable engine compartment tins (side wings) and some additional items that needed mounting.  Rewired the whole back half of the car with factory correct color coded wire. Getting closer to putting on the IDAs.

I have a BERG merged sedan header and did not remember the dual mufflers sticking out so far.  I'd be interested in seeing some of your dual muffler set ups as a comparison.

Damn, I love those transparent IDAs. Cool idea Rick.

Looking great, Rick! Might need a red flag hanging off those mufflers ;) I'd cut it back a bit, unless you're running bumpers then it wouldn't be so bad.

Funny Deano!  Zach, my thoughts too.  There is plenty of room between the merge and collector, as well as the muffler side.  Will get tucked back in about half the distance.  Looked really odd to me too. Haven't run duals for 20+ years and seemed a little too far outside the body to me.

Both my Berg collector flanges (1.5 & 1.75) don't go past the rear apron more than a half inch or so, and I'm running Berg duals and 4-tune ('66 & '64 T-1).

Mine won't go past the apron more than an inch either once I get the mods done.  Was surprised. The whole exhaust is a BERG unit.

Rick, looking at your header collector and collector location, it doesn't look like the Berg merged header on my car.  On the one I have, The collector flange is rotated and angled down a bit.  I have a merged 1 5/8 Berg header (933S) I think.  My car is a '68 though, so maybe there are differences in how far the apron is from the back of the engine.  Also, the header that I have I bought from YOU some years back.  :)  I have a dual QP muffler I had made from A1 that I still need to modify to have fit properly as well.  Man I wish Berg would make dual QP mufflers for their merged headers again.  Your chop is looking great, it will be sweet when it's done.

Jeff,

If you bought the old BERG header of mine that was silver hi temp coated, I actually modified the collector location.  I've had to do it on almost all headers I've ever owned to get the muffler positioned where I wanted it.

I believe if I was running stock bumpers for a 67 sedan my unit would fit perfectly. Since I am running the t-bars instead, it is up to me to change to suit my needs.  I am still very happy with the great quality of all BERG parts I have on my motor. They fit, they do what they are supposed to and I know they will last me for years.

My Berg 1 3/4" heater box merged header sticks out pretty far compared to my 932S and 933S. This is the test fit on my old ragtop. I originally wanted to mount my Berg dual QPs but the 2 and 4 pipes are in the way so I cut off the flange and reclocked it for this A1 Renn Kafer muffler.

Hey Rick - The BERG header I bought from you was not coated, or modified.  It was never even used and in brand new condition.  It fits perfect but now I just have to find some time to modify a dual QP muffler A1 made me to fit it.  Best of luck with your new engine, hope it runs great!

Jeff,

I could not remember which exhaust you bought. Thanks for the clarification.  Mine was apparently designed to run with a sedan that has the stock bumpers.  It would fit that application properly.  I am running T-Bars so I will tuck it back up under the car a little more.
