as my brother has got his engine cranked with oil pressure this weekend and will be firing up the beast shortly, i have started to collect the parts i have gathered over the years to start my engine build assembly as well.

i had everything stashed in a card box in the cellar, but due to increased humidity i made a horrible discovery.
some of the parts (most of them new) have been damaged and started slightly oxidating and some even rusting!


most badly hit were my vz14 camshaft and bugpack lightweight lifters, both new from the package.

i have already tossed away the lifters, example:

this is how i encountered the camshaft:

i carefully started to work away the rust on the bearing faces and lobed with P400 sanding paper, cleaned them and sprayed with universal oilspray.

the bearing faces feel smooth again and so do the lobes.


the obvious question to you, fellow enthusiasts, is:

can this camshaft be saved?

it would feel bad if i would need to buy a new camshaft due to this accident. mainly because i can't really afford to spend more money on the parts.
how bad is this damage? can i still use this camshaft for my engine? (with new lifters of course)


please advice me in overcoming this sabotage!

     Cams and lifters are not that much money. I Would replace them to be sure I had no negative effects on my new motor. GOOD GOD MAN, DE-WATER THAT BASEMENT! My expensive motor parts stay in my bedroom. UNDER MY BED. ONLY BECAUSE THE WIFE SAYS "NO" to putting them IN THE BED. Or, on my nightstand........................... :D :D :D ;D

i know, we should de-water that basement and mostly importantly keep our pornoparts far away from it!

Electrolysis is an effective non destructive method of rust removal, but it can't undo past damage (in this application).
Better stated, it helps save the salvageable.  IMHO

Donnow if a FK-8 will work for you but you can use mine if you would like?

Anyone thinks a FK-8 will work in a 1679cc?

Soem of the rusting and pitting looks pretty darn deep to me. Are all the lifters that bad? Call cb, ask if you can purchase just a few. The cam.............I would not trust it. Cams are relatively inexpensive anyways. Get a nice shiny new one. And keep it dry this time ;)

yeah, i dropped the plan of using the cam. damn right i will keep it dry, oil massaged and wrapped up next time, dudes!

Also when he changes to bigger carbs? 40 dells or 48 ida for example?

It'll need some SERIOUS improvement in the cylinder heads and some extra displacement, please.

I think it's better to buy a new camshaft that suits your size/heads/carbs. ;)

I put all my motor stuff on the nightstand. I kicked my wife out of the house ;D

the heads need some work, but in my opinion a fk8 with 1.25's could work in a smaller engine... just a suggestion, not the best combo.

D-ports and hemi-cut chambers

Hmmm... those hemi heads are going to make it difficult to get the compression up where a large cam would be happy. Do you know the CC's?

they were 39cc when he got them. the heads had been on a high compression 1641cc.

clean of what? the carbon debris in the chambers and on the valve, you mean?

i definitely need to clean up the heads, will be done when i start working on the ports and matchporting.

p.s. did you make the order yet?

guys, i have made up my mind and will buy a new webcam 110/163 and new bugpack racing lifters.

i think the webcam will work good since it's light on the exhaust with still nice lift on the intake, should be good for my setup with the kadrons.
