How's the condition of the car? Last time I saw it was late 90's, owned by a dutch guy if I remember correctly... ???

Yes, Frank from Holland bought it off me, less engine. He repainted it silver and fitted a normally-aspirated engine, but then sold the car again to Lee Darby in the UK. He ran it over here for a season or so, and then sold it again.

The last owner – Keith Gadenne – had the car repainted and, to be honest, it looks awful – paint 'splatter' design in every colour the paintshop had lying around. Keith never drove the car at all, but has just finished building a new 2387cc normally-aspirated motor with Berg 62mm carbs, Scat ultralite crank, Jeff Denham heads etc. The plan is to, at the moment, to put the car back to the way i ran it in the 1990s, with its original 2165cc turbo motor – good enough for an ET of 9.87 all the way back in 1994... I built the car 21 years ago! :o

I have no idea quite what has been done to the car, so it will be interesting to find out.

Not sure yet – the later changes certainly made the car quicker and more stable, though.

i saw a picture of the car in its "current" paint, not my style at all, always looked better in orange ;)

Nice one Keith! You might want to speak to Lee Darby - he was the one who had the chassis work done to bring it all up to MSA legal spec when it came back to the UK. This would be around 2002ish I think, and IIRC it might have been Hausers who did the work. I guess it'll all be still legal?

Personally I liked it most when it was first finished and all orange. Although it will be cool to see it back out on track in whatever guise you choose.

Very cool to hear you are getting hooked up with the car again. Would make a very interesting 'in da works' thread, which hopefully you guys will do. Personally, I like the car in its last incarnation whilst still in Keith's hands. The aerodynamic aids give the car a purposeful look and no doubt work. I would love to see a detailed set of pix of the rear suspension, as I can remember there was quite a useful setup on that car. I remember watching the car launch back in the early nineties and thinking 'holy crap!' that's quick.

Engine wise, are you going for the 'old school' pull-thru system with 48 Dell?

First of all, many congrats on your times last week! Fantastic!! 8)

The plan is, indeed, to put the car back to just the way I raced it in 1994 – 2165cc pull-through 48mm Dell and all. Good enough for 9.80s then, so who knows? As for the aerodynamic tricks, it helped having a step-son who was/is an F1 aerodynamicist!

The 60ft wasn't amazing, but it was consistent – best of 1.34. The car always ran arrow-straight (except when I once broke an output shaft – that sure woke me up!) and was a doddle to drive. The four-bar IRS rear end was truly innovative, and the product of someone who only ever built two VW chassis: mine and Dave Kawell's 'Blackie'. The rest of the time, Randy built V8 cars, so applied the same theories to the VWs. It seemed to work!

It will seem odd sitting at the wheel of it again – and very odd driving a right-hand drive race car after so many years! I plan (well, knowing me, I'll forget after a while…) to do a blog: No Mercy Racing (http://classicporschemagazine.blogspot.com/). :)

Wicked that you are going for the 'old school' approach again. Would love to see No Mercy back on the track a d maybe even pair up some time? A 1.34 60 ft is pretty impressive for a turbo car. The best I have to date is 1.38, which is still haulin'.

Really? The engine was sold to Ken Blomer and then made its way to Natasha Garcia, complete with the carb and manifold etc, and was then sold to Russell Ritchie a couple of years ago. Unless you know different, of course!  ???

Did "Flat Attack" run the same engine /carb . ??

I bought this carb a good few years ago and was told after I got it that it had originally beem on a Keith Seume racecar.
Sorry for causing confusion .. am just trying to help.

I remember the Jon Rathbone built "El Ninjo" and that Natascha had the engine extensively rebuilt and that she had also mated it to a Mendeola transmission. No idea what became of car or engine after that altho I contacted her a couple of times trying to buy the Mende.

Yes, Flat Attack had the same engine and carb – I simply transferred it complete over to No Mercy.

Natasha still has her car, with Mendeola, but sold the engine to Russell. It now sits in pieces in Aberdeen. I know it had a new crankcase when Ken Blomer had it, but have relatively recently learned that it now has a flanged crank. I have no idea why the crank was changed for, as far as I know, the engine was never blown up, or whatever. I wonder what else has been changed...

Not sure where the carb and inlet manifold you have came from but I know I did pass a new inlet manifold over to Pete Roberts, but I never used it on the car. As for the carb you have? Who knows!

I think I know what happened to the gearbox! When Lee Darby had the car, he used a big type 4 motor (off Paul Jackson IIRC) and at some point he had a flywheel failure - the centre of the flywheel broke freeacross the five bolt and five dowel holes. I suspect that the mess you can see is due to the flywheel floating around!

Beetlechoose used to be our sponsor in the german Käfer-Cup until it's demise in 1999. Usually they had a trade stand at the Essen Motorshow. One year this very same car was shown there. I dont remember the year, but I recall I asked them if I can take a seat in the car. Although it had the steering wheel on the wrong side, I was kinda addicted to this type of cars since this day...

Dave and Judy supplied me with the heads and turbo system in a box, the rest was down to me. Plus, of course, their amazing amount of experience in helping me set it all up – the telephone bills were frightening! :D

The last two are of Flat Attack, the car I owned before No Mercy. Look at those shorts!!! The guy with me is Bernie Smith, who owned the car when it was called 'Humbug' and went on to build/race his 8-second VW dragster.

And just in case anyone didn't know, Flat Attack became the Deano's VWs car that Dean Weaver raced in Outlaw Flat Four.

Type 1 case from Rimco (shuffle-pinned, inserts with 10mm studs, etc), welded Type 1 heads from Kawell, with 42 x 39 valves, 8.5:1 compression, KRE triple springs, Del West titanium valves. Welded 78mm Pauter wedgemated crank, 5.6in Carrillo rods, Wiseco pistons, C&A Z-Gap top rings, stock Cima 94mm cylinders. KRE10 camshaft, Bugpack lifters, Manton pushrods, Pauter 1.5 roller rockers, KRE Rajay EF40 turbo, KRE 48mm Dell'Orto DHLA carburettor. 50-horse NOS fogger upstream of turbo (to act as intercooler more than anything), MSD 7AL with JayCee crank-trigger ignition. Kennedy Stage 3 pressure plate with Scat three-puck disc. Pretty basic stuff, but largely Type 1 VW-based (the crank was based on a 69mm stroke VW forging).  :)

Very interesting. And did it work? Could you feel the nitrous "kick" in or did it just compensate for a very high intake temperature? Please excuse my ignorance

Likewise Keith interested to hear about this, so was this on the atmospheric side of the turbo or boost side (can't figure out what you mean by upstream!, duh I'm having a bad day!).

Thanks KS what the spec of the KRE10 camshaft.

Jamie you put it in the intake manifold before the turbo.

I manually operated it from a push-button on the steering wheel – I hit it in second gear and used it until in fourth gear. If I used it off the line, it would blow the tyres away. So I guess, yes, I could feel the difference!

It was essentially an FK10, I believe.

This car worked perfect. i remember when Keith drove it at Santa Pod in the 90's . It was like a different world for us at that time .
But Keith - build it back for racing. Not another gasser ..... make it fast and go racing with it

That was after I sold the car to Frank in Holland, so I can't help you. Sorry.

This engine is now in my garage (in Poland), it belongs to Chris Burns and we installed it in his pro stock bug "bugster" (we have the "bug-eyed" too;)). It was an 3 piece arpm case, 78 scat flanged crank, aluminium rods, venolia 4 inch pistons, angle flow heads with some huge titanium valves and really extensive porting, triple springs, pauter 1.5:1 roller rockers, berg 58 ida carbs with huge, welded intake manifolds. Don't remember what cam was there. I can have some bad informations because it was rebuild 2 times since Chris got it.

Nothing is wrong. But we have enough gasser here in europe. what we need is some fast race cars . As far as i know this car never raced in a G-class . Everybody has different interest but race cars are also nice .
Also we need some more events where we can meet to race.
