Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: Donny B. on April 20, 2011, 16:19:06 pm The distributor drive is home made. There is a whole thread about it on the SAMBA.

I think it was also mentioned on the lounge before. Still, I can't understand why?. I would risk to say that this engine is overcomplicated ;) Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: Zach Gomulka on April 20, 2011, 16:59:22 pm Because he can ;) I think it's great!
Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: Type1/DVK on April 20, 2011, 17:01:01 pm nice topic on the samba, forums > vintage speed. Cool build, including glass to check oil level!

Post by: deano on April 20, 2011, 19:11:34 pm He uses two timing lights at the same time to get this little hummer in tune. Three carburetors and two distributors all under one hood. :o
Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: . on April 20, 2011, 23:58:34 pm The three carburetor kit is a homemade reproduction of a vintage kit also.
It is a cool motor though. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=276715&highlight=three Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: Rennsurfer on April 21, 2011, 02:24:13 am Had the Bosch .019 in my Java Green '66 on the balanced 1,641cc that I built from scratch. That engine ran hard with that distributor and an Engle W-100 cam and cleaned up heads.
Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: So.Cal.Life on April 21, 2011, 04:35:15 am I like it ,It simply forces me to think!

;) Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the workmanship and the fact that this engine works at all (if it works). But, heaving in mind all the discussions about what is cal-look and what isn't.... This engine contradicts the basic rules of cal-look. It is a technical equivalent of what resto-cal is in styling. Not that there is anything wrong with that - just not my cup of tea. Still, a very interesting... curiosity. :) Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: BeetleBug on April 21, 2011, 13:50:33 pm Because he can ;) I think it's great! Just because he can does not mean he should. Title: Re: And it runs too... I don't believe anyone was implying that it was cal look. A 36hp in any form surely isn't ;) Just because he can does not mean he should. Does it really upset you that much?? He made a reproduction of a vintage carb kit, and added twin distributors/plugs to light it off, what's the problem?? Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: Donny B. on April 21, 2011, 15:25:35 pm I don't care what anyone thinks, I like it....!
Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: TexasTom on April 21, 2011, 20:03:57 pm Freaking AWESOME!
Way to GO! ... Literally. I wish I would've seen that if it was @ the Texas Classic ... would've stared at it for at least 30 minutes. Funny thing is that guy probably lives 15 minutes from our shop ... never seen it! I want one, but with two MAGS! LOL TxT Title: Re: And it runs too... Post by: qubek on April 22, 2011, 06:58:59 am Does it really upset you that much?? And does it really excites you that much? ;) It's a forum, people have different opinions, one will say that this engine is awesome, other will say that it's stupid. He made a reproduction of a vintage carb kit, and added twin distributors/plugs to light it off, what's the problem?? Don't think there is a problem with that. But still, it doesn't make sense. For me, a beauty in engineering is in achieving given goals in the simplest and most efficient way. This is one of the reasons I drive a Beetle. And this is why this engine don't excite me, even though I appreciate the workmanship and see all those shiny parts being made. It appears on various forums regularly, which is not a surprise, as it 's really flashy. But hey - I'm a man that prefers late model Ghias with square bumpers and big taillights over previous versions, so.... ;) |
