Title: Gasser Front Axles
Post by: dangerous on April 22, 2011, 23:47:52 pm
Does any one have pictures of VW gasser front tube axles?
I am particularly interested in the mounting points and steering box location.
My understanding is that most of these were simply Anglia front ends with a custom width (to suit the VW) tube axle.
So I guess they still used the anglia steering box and steering gear,
but a different axle and springs?

Token picture to make the post interesting: :D

I would not recommed that becasue they are sometimes very dangerous ... The Americans noticed this when they got faster and stocked their old cars in barns or garages. Now a lot of them are shipped to europe and we have those dangerous cars here which would never pass an official inspection . The first thing what i did when i got my car  was i cut off the front axel and welded in all original parts to make it drive more save

Anyone got a picture of the old CommonWealth VW gasser?  I recall hearing that it had a straight axle arc welded directly to the frame head...no suspension
at all.  Hopefully, it was just an ugly rumor  :D

Thanks Udo,
yes i would not do this to my own car.
I am helping to restore an old car that had one of these
and am looking to make it a little safer without spoiling the authenticity.
A quick look at the geometry of these old things tells me it will be difficult to stop the bump steer!

That's ok , keep going on  :) :)  But don't make it too fast

LIL John, Was a very cleaver fabricator/machinest Did most of the bitchen prototype stuff for Boyd back when they where building stuff out of boyds garage. Also pretty much started the billet wheel and parts stuff in the begining. Did alot of funnycar stuff in the 70's. But god's got a good fab-y now !
