Title: Bug in 36
Post by: edcraig on May 02, 2011, 04:34:20 am
Great day at the Bug In today, however, it seemed like attendance was down a little.  I think the other event happening at Featherly Park pulled some people away.  Not sure both events were scheduled for the same day?!

First, I'm very happy that Marc Buehler made it down from Washington with his Split.  Great to see both him and his car.  I know it was not cheap or easy or get it down here.  Thanks to his buddies Jim and Bob for helping Marc get the car down here, (and hopefully back in one piece!).  Really fun to see everyone's reaction to seeing it again after so many years.

Second, what a surprise to have a unplanned DRA mini reunion today.  So many guys I have not seen in a long long time.  I really enjoyed seeing them all.

Third, thanks for everyone who gave my so many positive comments on my Ghia, and to see the huge reaction to Marc's car, (along with our massive two car DRA display!).  Also...both of our cars trophied too.  Pretty cool!

Lastly, thanks to all in DKK for sharing their club space with Marc and myself.  Shortly before the Bug in, it looked like we had a little bit of a hiccup with a location for our display, (did I say "massive", two car display!).  DKK was good enough to help us out and shared some of their space..  Thanks guys!

....Ed.

It was our honor to share our space!

It's is so great to see the old clubs get back in touch and get cars out!

Marc's car was breathtaking!

And Ed, your car is always great to see as well!

Ditto what Rick posted. Ed & Marc, it was truly our club's honor to have you and D.S.K. with our display. I was so stoked that it worked out for everyone. The one guy that was directing cars in our area was very cool and let us put cars where they needed to be.

I'm processing a couple of pictures that I shot, today, and they'll be posted up soon. Stay tuned.

Had a great time, like to thank the Deeks (DKK), for the great food, hanging with them for a short time was cool. Here are some pics for Mark B. and Ed cars, NICE!

For many of us, the day began by waking up at 0400hrs. D.K.K. met up at a nearby Del Taco to eat, have some coffee, and hang out.

Almost in.

Our own Roy Maple's car.

We got our display dialed in and were quite happy with the end result.

Banners up.

But this caused weariness and some fatigue for a few of us. Junior, caught taking a quickie nap.

Afterwards, I was more than stoked to see two D.R.A. cars rolling into the car show area. I asked if they could set up next to us and they were taken care of.

I've been wanting to take this shot for many years.

Specification sheet.

For those old enough to remember Brasso, Neverdull, Blue Magic, Simichrome, etc.

Ed & Marc brought a couple of these great framed pictures.

Then, we made our way to the vendor area. Schley dragster, anyone?

She sure turned out nice.

Bee sighting.

Back at camp D.K.K. it was time to eat and we ended up having a pretty nice spread.

Plenty of shade from the sun and Santana winds to enjoy food.

More to time to joke, have fun, and catch up with friends.

Gunter! Thanks for the photo, Rosique!

Java Green goodness.

Over at the track, saw my friend Kathy, taking track side photos. We've known each other since grade school and she has one of the best offices in the world, strictly shooting drag racing for a living. NICE! Thanks for the photo, Rayburn!

Can't figure out why... but I'm always drawn to this car.

The big trophy is Mark Ramirez's Best Of Show and World's Most Beautiful Bug for his car named My Toy. Go look up your history and set the Wayback Machine to around 1980 for the answers.

Speaking of hula... Tod's hula girl is awesome! I collected a few of these over the years and haven't seen that one.

How about a '54 rolling pan/chassis?

Back at headquarters.

Gunter, again.

Just can't get enough of Marc's car.

The cabin.

It was a long day, and all things must draw to an end. On the way out... stopped by and talked to Marc one more time.

Marc & Zach.

We said our goodbyes and talked about the next event where our paths will cross, again.

On the road again with D.K.K. Ernie Barron in my rear view mirror.

Then, caught up with Fabien in his wife's convertible.

Got home at 1600hrs. tired and ready for some relaxing. Twelve hours and very worth it. Even though it was the lightest crowd I've ever seen, our club had a blast. Thank you to every DEEK that made it, contributed, and made the day a memorable one. It was also cool seeing a few of the traveling members from The Lounge. Great talking with you all. Hope to see you soon and may your journey home be a safe/fun one.

See y'all at the next event/gathering!

Great write up Ed and great photos to all who submitted them.  I would have really liked to see the red split again after all of these years as long ago Billy Aroyo, owner prior to Mark B. let me use those front seats in my pre Butternut car for sometime.

Unfortunately Christie has been very sick for going on two weeks and I started getting it on Thursday.  Made it to Nick's on Friday and C&C early Saturday morning, but became totally wiped out after that.  Yesterday was spent in bed sleeping and wishing I was somewhere else.

Looking forward to the Classic next month and the Bug-In next year.

I had a great day!!! Scored lots of goodies in the swap area, a nice rear bumper for my daughters ghia, a license plate frame for the same car that reads "PLEASE DON'T TAILGATE" ;D, a very nice 40 hp shroud, and a repro sprintstar that fell off the Empi display and got minor damage and will make a great spare for the new squareback I cruised out to the event in. I've had 2 notchbacks in the past, the last one was at the show yesterday, but never a squareback, I gotta say that I'm diggin squarebacks. I was able to haul all my goodies home in it and didn't have to look for a friend that drove a truck to bring it home. Sweet!!!

Of Course   My best friend in Texas had sent me a " Rocket Science T- Shirt   "
So that was my red  shirt of the day. I was Rockin' it because I didn't get a DSK
shirt when they were last printed. Thanks to the motormania (c)  crew !!  ;)

By the way Mr. Texas Tom, allow me to pre-introduce Don Musselwhite / friend from DVB & friend
of the SHOOB - E ...  he is in San Angelo, with family in Austin. He just bought a '67 Cal look.
His 69 savanna beige bug with BERG motor was legendary. You'll get a kick outta him.   Heck ;D

Nice train.

Man, I wish I could'a been there.  Joe Larsen's ride is looking sweet.  Kudos to my Deek brothers, once again you all seem to have been the life of the party.  Who wore the lamp shade on their head?

Great pics all.

Kudos.

I was soooo busy celebrating Bruce's (61SNRF)  birthday, I forgot to take pics.
I do want to say tho, it was a nice day, & we ended the day with twinkie cakes.
I too saw so many people from years past, Roger Grago, Keith Goss, Frenchy,
and Don Musselwhite too. But the definite highlight (for me) was to meet
Tero & Sanna !! ;)  Lookin forward to the Classic!!!

Heck ;D

Thanks for posting all the purdy pictures Guys!

Glad you got some use outa your new threads there Heck(er)  ::) LOL
Tell Don to give me a shout if he's ever 'round my parts ... a Friend of yours is a Friend indeed! ;)

Fred,

Your 67 looks sweet with the Alloys on it. Gives it a very classic look.

This is to Ed Craig.

Ed, in your 'today' photo of the DRA members, is that the Porsche part Kerry Morris?  Over the years I have had business dealings with Kerry for the most rare and needed of Porsche Prototype parts, but it's been a long time since I saw him.
Just wondering? Thanks
Steve Walker

The same thought crossed my mind, which in this feeble state recalls him as Kerry Morse   ;D

Ed,
Thanks. I was going to say that Kerry sure has changed in appearance since the last time I'd seen him.
Funny how two VW based guys, famous guys at that, have the same name.

Wow,what a weekend!! As some of you know, I almost lost the car on the way down when the trailer decided to go faster than the car towing it. There were a few moments when I really thought my time had come, but I was able to gain control and get the car and trailer to a parking lot where Reverend Bob and I made some adjustments to the tongue weight to keep that from happening again. Unfortunately the car received some serious damage when a hold down strap came loose and allowed the area on the body under the split window jam into a storage box. Then when unloading the car in So Cal,it was discovered that something had come loose in the left rear brake drum, diminishing the braking capacity of the vehicle (brakes suck!). Also the motor wasn't running well.
Despite all the bad luck, the trip was a huge success. The amount of positive response was astounding and greatly appreciated, easily making the trip worth the expense and pain.
Now add all the old friends I was reunited with plus the new ones I made and it's obvious  why I've been smiling ever since. I had a blast!!!

Thank you, everyone, for making me feel welcome. I'll be coming back.

[attachment=1]
Ouch! this won't be an easy fix

[attachment=2]
Can you believe the gall of this guy? I enjoy people checking out the car but to just climb in.......he said he just wanted to take a picture of the dash when I kicked him out. <grin>

[attachment=3]
Keith Goss and myself.....when he used to work for Fleming & Aronson, I used to give him a hard time about his $150 car. I would tell Ron that someone had parked a piece of crap in front of his shop and it was bad for business. <grin>  Imagine my surprise when I saw his beautiful chopped top car in Hot VW a few years later. This was the first time we've talked since back then and had a good laugh about it. Good times!

[attachment=4]
Ed Craig and myself. Ed and I always have a good time.

And all of the members of DRA and Red Ron Haase it was also nice to see you at the Friday night and Saturday at the get together at the hotel. Kerry Morris was a member of the Vintage Club and use to hang out at Vintage Parts in Glendale Calif with Bob Scott Gary Longworth Cliff Crate and others.

It was still a pleasure to look it over again. See something new every time :)

Thanks Bruce for your kind words. I think part of the problem was that I didn't have my voter card displayed on my windshield in plain site ( wind kept blowing it away )  :P  I probably should have brought some tape. Dah! Anyways, I had a blast meeting old friends and making new ones and congratulate the winners of the show. 8) Cya at the Classic! ;)
