Title: Magnesium torque thrust D colours
Post by: migier on May 09, 2011, 09:40:33 am
Hi,

I recently found a set of magnesium torque thrust D's in porsche pattern.
These need to be restored .
Does anybody know the original colour they used on these rims?

Thanks guys,

Greets

I think the company Eastwood in the usa have a colour that comes in aerosols that is close..might be called "detail grey" I'm sure some of the us cal-look guru's might be able to confirm this...

hope this helps

Simon

As long ago as all magnesium Torque Thrusts were made, I don't believe the ever were painted when new.
IMO, Glass bead blast them, the patina of natural mag, with the outer rims polished will provde a very attractive appearance.
I read up on and have used a protectant, GIBBS Penetrant on the mag parts on my car with outstanding success.

Your new wheels have a real story to tell, given the time it had to take for the red paint to wear away as it did. Wonder what is the story of their being painted that way? Do you know?
Nice find!

I would second what Steve said, Nice find, and they were not painted when new.  Great wheels!

I'd also agree with Steve's comments.  Within the last year I've been introduced to "GIBBS" and the stuff is fantastic.

For the correct aged Mag look I always use graphite spray lubricant. It's a trick I learned from a very talented hot rod buildeder.

Soda blast the wheels, Spray on a even film and wash with water. Repeat untill they have "Aged" the desired decades needed.

thanks for the replies guys!

I don't really know the history of the wheels, just that they came of a '72 911t wich was imported over from the usa.

I really like them like on carlos's car.
So i will probably glass bead blast them .

greets

michiel

Geoff, did you apply the graphite spray only to the spokes? Lips are soda blasted? The oval looks rad.

X2 -- you can even do this trick to your headers/exhaust and they will look great and last a surprising long time

Back in '98 this NAPA paint was recommended for my old aluminum D spokes.
Just happened to see it in the paint locker yesterday.  ;)

Cool!  Fabs, which sand blasting media did you use?  Was it hard to remove the shiny layer?
