Title: Rear wheel bearing puller
Post by: Lids on June 20, 2011, 19:27:20 pm
Has anybody got any idea what type of puller I can use to remove the rear wheel bearings.

don't give me another handy tips like hitting the axle until you can get behind the bearing.

I would like a puller that fits in between the bearing.

Thanks

What I have done with swingaxle is to use a gear puller (I only have a 3 finger style) and pull the axle housing behind the bearing until I have enough room to behind the bearing.  You will need to undo the axle house in order to do that, but it worked for me.  It really is the best way.  The VW puller pulls the internal race off the axle.  I don't have that tool so I improvised...

Got to Machine Mart adn you can get a cheap set (different sizes) for around £15-£20 the others will come in useful somewhere else ;)

I would like to reuse the bearing as it has never been turned!

No handy tips please, I would like to buy a bearing puller that works on the rear wheel bearing without damaging it.

I have a 3/4 arm puller but the problem is the bearing seats in the axle tube just enough so you can't get behind it.  I have used the old trick of hitting the axle and forcing the bearing down, but would rather not do this.

There is a drawing in the VW idiot book how to make a rear wheel bearing puller. Basically a puller with threaded rods thats have been grind to slip between balls of the bearing. But I don't know if the bearing is damaged or not.

If my weak memory still serves me, the collet puller shown came in two variants. An eight and a  nine ball puller,
depending on the bearing.

God, I hope it's not my CRS flaring up again  ;D
