Title: Can you please school me on Riviera wheels?
Post by: 181 on July 20, 2011, 21:53:57 pm
I´m looking for new light and nice wheels to replace my 4 lug Sprintstars. I like Rivieras but I´m lost - there are mag versions and alu versions, 4.5 and 5.5 width. To be clear I would really like to build a set of 4.5 fronts and 5.5 backs. So...what is the story behind Rivieras and how much do they weigh? Thanks!

First off, I am no expert on Riviera wheels but I do have some. Using bathroom scales a genuine 4.5inch rim is 6.5kg, not exactly light.

If you want a light four stud rim, Mahles may be a better option, they feel light, although I don't know what they weigh.

I haven't weighed them, but I'm betting that 4 lug Mahles/Pedrinis/Fuchs are the lightest of the lot. Not counting Ercos ;)

My original Formula Vee (early riviera, no flat pad on spoke) were heavy. Very with
crude machining of the casting with tons of extra metal on the iside. Four lug Fuchs are forged, therfore light.

i had 4.5 mag fronts and 5.5 alloy rears, never weighed them but the fronts were much lighter (and a bitch to keep polished in the uk weather).(http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f200/trekker76/Adolf2.jpg)

That's true. I think the Mahle's/Pedrini's are cast, so if you are concerned about weight the Fuchs are probably the way to go.
