Title: Advice on indicator relays which work for LED rear lights
Post by: stait9 on July 26, 2011, 22:52:49 pm
Hi

Really need some help and was hoping someone knows the answer to the following question.

I have recently installed rear LEDs in my 1960 Beetle instead of 12 V bulbs. They are great, really bright. They will make a difference and hopefully help stop idiots driving into the back of me.

Have a slight issue, the flasher rate on the indicator [turn signal] is too fast.  I spoke with Chip they guy who manufactured the lights and he told me this sometimes happens.  Apparent it is the flasher relay and the easiest thing to do is replace it with a LED compatible unit.  He gave me the name of such a unit - Tridon EP35

This is great except these units aren't available in Europe and specifically the UK.  I'm on a bit of a deadline and need this final piece for the MOT (annual road worthiness test in UK for anyone who didn't know), does anyone know of a similar LED compatable 12 V flasher unit or another solution?

Help will be much appreciated.

Cheers

Stuart

Try these :  http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/VWP-onlinestore/relays/flashers.php

they've always been reliable, I rewired my whole car with their parts recently.   :)

all the best.    gary.

I use led's front and rear. Had to add a filiment bulb to get the load correct to flash the relay. Put in some qtr panel turn signals ( euro style) working good for 3 years.

Stuart, I've been looking at Chips lights.  Sure look good.  Do you have front bulbs also wired in?

Hi Rich

They are great rear lights, would highly recommend and Chip is really helpful.  I've just gone for rear LEDs as the car has wing mounted indicators at the front still and didn't really need the same brightness in the front.  We're just trying a later relay which should resolve the flasher speed issue.  If you are getting the lights from Chip, he can supply an appropriate flasher unit as well which might be worth getting.  He can also do 6 volt units too.

Cheers

It looks like this may be the solution: http://www.rawcomponents.co.uk/led-flasher-relay.html
Allows a load of 30W and the front buld is 21W.  Clearly hazzards will not be an option but that's fine as the car doesn't have them anyway.
Will update this if there are any problems.
If you are buying rear LEDs and have the time, the other option is: Tridon EP12 or EP 35 which is available everywhere but Europe.

The problem with that relay is that it does not click at all. I found that quite annoying

Yep, looks like it's silent... but for the MOT at least they work   :)    So the search continues for a clicking solution as agree it'll get annoying.
