What size long bit is used to enlarge the galleys connecting the cam bearings?  I read Bob's article and the link above, and I understand what to do, but it never mentioned what size to use.

Thanks, Brian

Thank you for the quick response.  Drill bit and stop collar ordered.

I think it is a very good mod, especially on high revers/Autobahn/track engines. Hovever the mod is beneficial already at about 32-3300 rpm. So even stock to mild engines can benefit from the mod, especially those that see a lot of freeway. As Mr. Hoover stated, the mod helps keeping the valve springs oiled and cooled, and of course the rockers. It also aids slightly in keeping the head temperature down. As Mr. Hoover also stated, it can result in slightly elevated oil temps. But that is the easy part to control.

"My" mild to semi quick engines do not get the mod unless ordered. On those I do a couple of other small mods that aids in the same direction. But the wild ones do.

On a side note it is important to be aware of that IF this mod is made to a stocker or close to, it is mandatory to have at least a 0,3l or better a 1,5 qrt oil sump on the engine. Because at higher rpms this mod lowers the amount of oil in the sump with about 0,2 qrt. That means a higher risk of oil starvation if no extra capacity is present.

On the flip side, guys like Ron Fleming are restricting oil to the cam bearings, to help feed the rod bearings...

Correct. But that was then, this is now.
- In the mean time we have gotten better oil, AND we have learned how why and what happens inside the engine wrt. lubrication. In the 80ies we also plugged huge Melling oil pumps in our enigines. Today we can suply an equal engine with a 26 mm pump.

Ah NO! This is right now! Ron just went 9.98/134 with that exact setup, restricting oil (yes, with the new 0/5 hi-zut racing oil...) and runs that engine to 9500. Rod bearings are cherry race after race. Engine makes 320hp + by the way.

On the other hand. The Dirt tracker (Autocross in Europe) I help has a 2liter (restricted cc) that pumps 215 hp and , has the Hoover mods and then some, more or less lives between 5500 and 8500 rpm for an entire season (6 race weekends, 5-6 heats per weekend) In the 3 seasons I have been involved in it I have never seen any signs of premature wear on the rod bearings. We do replace them every winter for security though.

But I guess it boils down to what you are diong and what you are willing to expect of failiures. A seized rocker may be a lesser evil than a spun rod bearing. But if the rocker keeps the valve down it can be demolition time.
