Title: My 68 track/circuit car - Rebuilt & racing - video added
Post by: bat69 on August 11, 2011, 00:59:06 am
This build has been nearly 3 years in the making. This car is my old hillclimb car which I stacked at a hillclimb in Oct 2008. It was not a bad stack at all but after pullling the car apart I found there were some major cracks and rust in the old girl which needed repairing. That started a rebuild process that went from just a quick repair/rebuild to a major restoration and complete change.

The car is a 1968 semi auto floor (ball joint / IRS) which has been converted to manual. The body is also 68. There is very minimal modifications to the body because the rules for the class I race/built the car for (improved production) does not allow it. Body is all steel, windows glass and cage is made from CDS.

I have complete all the work on the car myself including body work, building the roll cage, painting etc, with a little help and assistance from a few mates along the way (thanks Greg, Johnny 2 Pac, Grass, Loz and Paul). Some of the things like the custom tank was done by a friend of mine

The car is being built to compete in circuit events, hillclimbs and road racing events (rallies). My main focus is the circuit events and rallies. The longer and more high speed events, hence why I have gone a non standard cooling fan.

Engine is build by Stan Pobjoy. It is a twin plug 1915cc using Stan's counter weighted crank and cam, 044 wedgeport heads (42/37) and quad 45mm throttle bodies powered by Haltech full programable ECU all running through a custom exhaust.  The Box is a custom 4 gear Albins box with ZF LSD.

This has been a build that has taken a little longer then expected but the car is in its final stages of completion and is very close to hitting the track, so I thought I would share a few photos.

And a couple more. I originally had it set up with standard fan shroud and 44 IDF's but after talking to a succesful VW beetle circuit racer here in Australia I decided to go the porsche fan shroud and custom air box. Changing to the different fan ment I could not use the twin plug ignition dizzy, so I sold that and made up a crank angle sensor and went EFI.

Thanks. Nothing that special really as the class I race in does not allow for to many changes apart from height adjustment. It is a 'standard' BJ beam with added height adjuster and larger eccentric bush for more camber. The rear is standard IRS beetle. Plus there are added custom adjustable sway bars from and back. Title: Rebuilt and racing
Post by: bat69 on October 01, 2012, 11:08:35 am
After 4 years I debuted my hillclimb/circuit car at its first State (NSW) Hillclimb. This event is the final round of the NSW state hillclimb championship held at Newcaslte's King Edward Park. Newcastle is located on the east coast of Australian about 2hrs north of Sydney.

Below is some footage of my newly rebuilt beetle competing at its 1st state hillclimb. This event was the last event I did in this car 4 years ago before I decided to rebuilt it. Having never driven this car at this event before, my 1st run of the hill was me trying to see the limits of the tyres and handling. shift light is set @ 7500. The thin bit of road which is more like a goat track I enter not long after the start line which link the two (2) roads is entered at 120kph.

Thanks. I love to 'drift' it every now and then. Its not the fastest way on tar but spectators love it as they do not expect a VW to power slid through corners.

The throttle bodies are modified 45mm DCOE throttle bodies converted to down draft with an adaptor plate. (The bolt holes dont line up). Whilst the butterflies are 45mm the top of the TB has been opened out to except the trumpet off a 48mm delorto. Injectors are off a V12 Jag. All the other stuff like fuel rail, pressure reg etc are all a mixture of VW T3 or Type 3. The air box picks up cold air from under the window and seperates the intake from the cooling (porsche fan). Air intake temps are cooler with the airbox in place. Its all a little home made but it works well. The computer is a E8 Haltech fuel and ignition.

Have you got some close up pics of your TBIs?

Also what's the thoughts behind mountin your injectors inboard?

What's it idle like?

Thanks :)

That looks really untidy Nathan  ;D

Now get some new tyres for next year and give the Championship a red hot go.

I think Col would appreciate some competition  ;)

Watching you fly around the course has given me some more motivation to get my Ghia done -- Thanks Harold

I will take some close up photos of the TB's and post it you want.

The injectors are inboard because they will not fit on the outside of the TB in the engine bay. There is not enough room and I would have to modify to much of the body work to get them to fit and the rules does not allow it.

It idles fine.
