Title: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: 71CALRIPPER on August 19, 2011, 13:09:11 pm What do you think is it possible to have a nose down arse up style on a early 911/912?
The only sorta cal look porsche i can find is something like this ... But its just almost standard but throw that colour onto a bug with the wheels and you have a nice cal looker? (http://supercardigest.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/1970-PORSCHE-911-T-3.JPG) Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Yep : http://cal-look.no/lounge/index.php/topic,97.msg242243.html#msg242243 But I don't know about the nose down style for a 911/912 ???, maybe because I see them all the time with stock or race-track/rally style. Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: TexasTom on August 19, 2011, 14:22:35 pm Lose the trim & bumperettes, delete the vent windows, anodize black the rest of the window and light frames, beef the rear tires with some alloys or burners, body color the door handles and headlight rings and you'll be pretty close.
... and get a smaller black antenna. Color is good to go! ;) Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: Rennsurfer on August 19, 2011, 14:33:47 pm Or, take the easier route; simply get a later model 911 that already came factory with everything blacked out and color coded. The early seventies versions are works of art just as they were produced. No reason to alter perfection on the world's best sports car.
But... to each their own. An even better option; opt for the R Gruppe approach. By far, the best and most functional of all options. http://www.twinsparkblog.com/whats-an-r-gruppe-porsche-911-car (http://www.twinsparkblog.com/whats-an-r-gruppe-porsche-911-car) Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: TexasTom on August 19, 2011, 14:46:17 pm If that's your train of thought, then just buy one of these ... early body with all the goods in place!

Post by: Jeff68 on August 19, 2011, 17:44:19 pm I love 911's and 912's, and especially the early ones ( But not as much as air cooled VW's!) and you could definitely modify them with the Cal-Look style. For me I love the 911 as a sports car that was designed and engineered for sports car / course type driving / performance. If you lower the front end of a 911 and give it positive rake, I think you'd be taking away from the performance of the car - unless maybe you were going to Drag Race it. Drag Racing is where much of the Cal-Look influence is from right? So you would end up with a Drag Race influenced 911 or 912 that most likely could not perform as it was intended to. Plus I think it would look like $hit. Maybe if you had a basket case 911 / 912 it might be considered....
Modifying an aircooled VW in the Cal-Look Style can enhance and improve it in every way (if done properly / correctly of course) so to me it makes sense. This treatment on a 911?......not so much. If I had a stock looking 911 or 912 and wanted to improve on it I would concentrate on engine / suspension / and brake system mods........Hey wait, that's what we do with our Cal-Look cars right? ;D Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: jonathan on August 19, 2011, 18:44:01 pm I lowered the front on my 912.Looked cool, but as mentioned not ideal for handling.
The good thing is you only need a 19mm spanner. As soon as mines back in 1 piece it will be sold to pay for a cal look bug. Porsches are ok....But they're not Bugs. Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: Cornpanzer on August 19, 2011, 19:21:12 pm The blue car is 911 R. #20 of 20. Ordered new by Lance Reventlow in 67. $500k car nowadays. Got to spend the day driving that car last fall. One of the highlights of my year!
Here is my RGruppe car. 2.8 litre MFI twin-plug. Funny thing. Cal-Look was influenced by Porsche's, but when you talk to the founding members of the RGruppe, they say that the club was inspired by the DKP. Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: kingsburgphil on August 20, 2011, 03:53:42 am Back in the 70's.....there were quite a few Cal Look guys who had or moved on to 901 series cars.

Dave's car is just right. REALLY dig that style exhaust on those. Same one that inspired me to have Tiger (A-1) build mine.
Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: Cornpanzer on August 21, 2011, 04:12:36 am Thanks Jim. That means a lot coming from you. Fred, I hate to break it to you, but the sport muffler is gone, replaced by an original "R" muffler that I found a couple of years ago.
Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: Jim Ratto on August 21, 2011, 04:25:37 am How's it sound? Got any vid? Love to hear it. ;)
Dave, the in action shot on the highway, that picture just begs for the story to be told. There is so much mood in that photo. Open road, low angle of (afternoon?) sun, sport muffler growling away for mile upon mile.... Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: Rennsurfer on August 21, 2011, 04:46:06 am Jim's post is right on cue. Please DO tell, Dave. By the by, that R muffler is equally as cool.

Open road, low angle of (afternoon?) sun, sport muffler growling away for mile upon mile.... I dont have any video yet. It is very optimistic to call the R muffler a "muffler". At idle and low RPM, it is deep and throaty. Above 4000 it becomes a straight through pair of pipes and is very angry and loud. Plus, it has a scalloped RSR flywheel and an aluminum pressure plate and shoe, so it will rev to the moon almost before you can catch it. 7800 in first gear is almost instantaneous. I will try and get some video soon. That photo was taken on the outskirts of Roswell New Mexico. We were on a trip from the Midwest to California via the Grand Canyon and a few other cool stops. My friend from Portugal, Vasco was driving when I shot that photo. We had started the day well east of Amarillo, Texas where we stopped for lunch. By the time we hit Roswell, the sun was setting and we were making a final push to Riudoso New Mexico. You can read more of the story and see a lot more photos on my blog under "Road Trippin" http://renn-spot.blogspot.com/ A few minutes later Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: Cornpanzer on August 21, 2011, 22:33:44 pm Sorry to derail this topic.
I think that a lot of the mid-80s cal-look cars were mimicking what Porsche was doing at the time. By then the drag race influence was not as obvious. You had more Fuchs wheels, Baby Tornado mirrors, etc. My friend Alan's 69"S" has kind of a Cal-Look vibe to it. (http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads19/Alan+s+SR1313961124.jpg) Hope to see some of you at Rennsport in October at Laguna Seca. Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? OK, so I get that, but these cars are driving on the highway or parked. So I'm guessing this is the owner trying to make their car look incomplete and send a message to fellow "in the know" owners that they're car might hit the track? :-* Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: bilboa2 on December 19, 2011, 02:58:23 am here is a pic of roger grago's car 2 years ago at the monterey historic car races. Color is aborgine, eggplant in german ? Real porsche color. This is actually the the 2nd 911 aborgine color roger built. The first on was built and sold in the early 80's , no rs flares as I remember, as we where roomates for 10 years living in balboa (newport beach) . He has always had a dkp decal in the rear window. I believe roger said the r group was influenced by dkp guidelines. Many went the 911 way after dkp days. Roger helped me redo my 72 911, grand prix white, black trim, 2.7 carrera motor. I also remember a friday night after partying at speedway motorcycle racing, we decided to drive his 911 to mammoth mountain ski resort ( 350 miles) and go skiing. Left at 1 in the am, drove via downtown los angeles ( shorter way) , hauling ass.. Roger decides to make the goal of the mammoth exit in under 4 hrs. We did it with 1 ticket..The motor at that time was 2.2 911t carbed. He now has in his garage the makings of a 2.8 twin plug motor.. With rogers' recent health set back, it will take a little longer but he is doing well as per our last conversation. Pre 73 911's rock, but I really would like a 87 carrerra with g50 trans. Workmanship and paint where at a peak for porsche at that time. THANK YOU ROGER...keep on the mend.. bill

Title: Re: cal look 911/912 ? Post by: bilboa2 on December 19, 2011, 06:15:23 am there was a 67 painted aborigine by someone in dkp2 but, I think the club was just over by then, can't remember his name, barry I think ? The color at twilight and night time really make it a good choice, almost looks black. White 911 car in pic is a 72, same weekend in monterey, car parked in the the pits. Looked alot like mine but I had powder coated black trim. 1972 only 911's had an OIL filler cap/door access in right rear 1/4 panel, changed for reasons of... ? I bet a few housewifes or x friends put fuel down it... EXPENSIVE fix... Mark thurber of fat also had a red 72 911 converted to " 911 cal - look." 1972 was first year of 2.4 motors, t,e,s all had mech injection and 915 trans. vs prior 71 2.2, earler still 2.0's, w/ 901 trans, think 914 shift pattern. 1973, early 911's had mech inj, lates cis, 1974 brought big bumbers and 2.7 cis with smog , case, head stud problem motors. The 73 rs motors ( euro only ) where 2.7 mech inj rated at 210 hp. I could power slide my car like my weber vw's. Rogers lisc plate means to read.. 73 rs touring ..model. MANY great road trips in his car. bill
