Title: Wiring up a motometer tacho with a MSD system?
Post by: Deanodynosaurs on August 22, 2011, 01:58:42 am
Managed to bag a super rare motometer tacho for my 58 ragtop resto.  8)

However, being a 30-40 year old gauge not suprisingly it came with no instructions! I dont wanna wire this wrong as I'm NOT gonna find another one, thus I was wondering if anybody know how to wire this in to the car?  ???

The car its going in is a 58 bug, but running 12 volts electric with a full MSD iginition system. Pictures below shows the gauge, and connections.

At a guess I'd think the switched live goes to terminal '12', it needs to be earthed to the '-' treminal, and the tach output wire needs connecting to the 'z' terminal. However, as its a older gauge do i need a MSD tach adaptor?

Cheers in advance for any advice.  :)

what about the little tab in the middle, it looks like this moves as well.  My advice would be to post on the samba.

the tab in the middle looks like the # of cylinder switch. and i don't think thesamba is of any help either...

i think you're right about the terminals, but i'd check before hooking it up. is there any chance of getting the tachometer looked at by someone who knows about these things? my brother got all his smiths gauges refurbished and calibrated. the tach was updated for the pertronix unit too.

Thanks all for the replys.

Yeah, i should have said, as 67-indeed/DVK suggests, the tabs is a cylinder selector (Yes i have got it on 4 cylinders!!  ;D)

As suggested i'll probably try and see if i can speak to somebody who knows about theses things before connecting it, but sadly i cant actually find anyone who does know about motometer stuff, especially the tacho!!  ???

Cheers, I'd seen the thread on the samba, but it not really that helpfull.

Lids, i'll try a post in accesories. :)

Thanks all,

12 - 6 mean 12v or 6v.
"z" for ignition ( zundung in german)
"-" for the ground.
simple no?
