Title: Lil Stink Hound
Post by: stussyrich on October 05, 2011, 21:09:24 pm
If you have read this in the pure racing section there are updates at the end of this thread of the build.
thought it was better to post it here as it is a build thread now.

hereLil Stink Hound the story so far. A brief rundown.

no way i'm gonna remember it all, i've slept since then..

This is my 65 uk bug with full history.
It all begins with the car looking like this when i bought it 5 years ago.

The idea was to build a street car with a 2 litre motor, so here you are.

As you can see a whole lot of work went into this build.
The car was driven on the street in the guise for several years until i joined the SAS Renn Wagens and decided to race it.

The full specs are...

2332cc 84x94
044 oval port heads 42x37.5 with 1.4 rockers
web 86c cam
48IDA webers

Engine did 189bhp @6500rpm and 172ft lbs torque@ 4500 rmp on the jaycee dyno.

kcr built pro street box 4.12 ring and pinion, stock 1st 2nd 3rd and an 0.89  4th.

Here is a run down off events and times the car has done upto now, with a few changes on the way.

The first time out was at vw action 2009 where it ran a 13.6, a club qualifying time.

As you can see the car had a change of wheels and tyres for the event to aid with traction and gearing.

Next comes york for the ACE vs ASS shootout and a new pb of 13.2 @ 102mph.

next out was Minis vs beetles at york but no pb and a most embarasing spin on the track.
I'll sort out the video link.

next out did a rwyb day and droppped my ET to 13.0, oh so close to that 12 i'm chasing.

The car was fitted with a set of buggy seats which ment modifying the set mounts and the battery cut of switch.
Also i added a line lock to see if i could get some heat into the tyres.

Next up the facelift and some more mods...

To start with the pedal assembly was modified with the adition of a moon pedal and a custom linkage.

Most of the mods were cosmetic involving another load of pinstriping and gold paint.

Next up was big bang and after a couple of runs managed to completely destroy the clutch on the start line so we changed it at the track so i could drive it home.

And thats the damage. A very broken kushloc disc.
And yes i drove it home, all 3 hours.

Time for a new set of front wheels.
Zero offset centerline bubbles.
Biggest problem i had was having to clearence the calipers and add wheel spacers.

thought i'd add some more gold.

Next outing was the drag day and a mission of running a 12 on radials before the slicks would go on.

Second run 12.99. on with the slicks and ra 12.8

The 356 rims were borrowed of a mate and painted gold and the second hand slicks were added.

vw action 2010.

Managed to run a 12.64 in the night racing any got myself a trophy.
learned how to use the line lock aswell...

The windows were replaced with lexan and the race weight erco's were put on, Some rollcage mods were done including doorbars and a dash bar.

Next up on the list is the best show i've ever been to... EBI 4.
Ran a new pb of 12.38 @106mph.

You tbe link to a video.

The car named and lightened further with a bit of 108 octane race fuel thrown in for good measure.
Oh and has a box chance for a KCR build pro drag with 3.88 ring and pinion. 3.78 1st 2.21 2nd 142 3rd and 1.12 4th with a jaycee alloy spool.

The cooling has come of it.

had to cut the rear valance out to re fit it as i needed too run the deckid.

The name was designed by myself and a mate printed it onto vinyl, i took the doors of the car and added the logo and knifed around the letters and cartoon. luckily had a spare done so put that on the decklid.

So ok on the way home from work i decided to stop off at b&q, £16 lighter i headed home to do a trial peice on the car which i think has come out perfect. It looks very subtle in the daylight which is what i wanted. So may go a bit mad with it. The first pic makes it look darker than it is.

before anyone says anything yes it is shiny and i'm a bit unsure about it.

It's gold 2mm, very happy with the results. The stripe shows of the panels well.

Cheers for all the comments guys, it's inspired me a little today.

Thought id see what i could de with the lettering as it doesn't stand out enough.

So here goes... I masked out some of the lettering on the decklid ( just incase it looked shit) and painted it gold the same as the trim and then decided to add some flake to it.

so happy with the results....

After the succes of the deckild, putting the lid next to the car i realised that the it was perect for whet i wanted so i got the door off the car and sat on the garage floor with on on my knee and masked out the lettering and painted it the same and the lid.

The paint changes colour slightly in the sunlight which looks ace.

lil stink hound loves getting in on the action so thought i'd better give him some credit for the cars name.

Got to the track yesterday and straight off the trailer i ran a PB 12.27@107.1mph with a 1.66 60ft.

second pass was a new PB of 12.12@108 mph with a 1.62 60 ft.

Ran another 12.2 then fourth run i dropped the tyre pressures down 1psi to 12psi and only did a small burnout, the car lifted the front wheels of the tarmac for the first time.

The side winds got to much after that so called it a day and headed home.

hopefully some vids to follow soon.

So hopefully after a bit more tuning on the suspension and maybe a prepped track i'm pretty confident about an 11......

changed a few things about today with the addition of a berg stepped header and a set of jaycee italian 51.5's.
It's just a bit of a test really before i build the new motor with these parts on..
Hopefully if the weather plays ball then i'll be able to test it out this weekend at the track

Thought id better update this abit..   so i went out to york dragway a few weeks back with the old setup and straight of the trailer ran an 11.97. ;D ;D ;D

Took it to vw action at santa pod and ran 4 12.0's with the stinger and 51.5's..so i was unsure if they helped at all..
I decided to leave them on the motor and go to york for viking volks fest this weekend and  11.91 @ 111.9 with a 1.58 60ft..
thinks got even better after on an 11.9 dial in i broke out with 11.86 @ 110.8 with a 1.58 60ft..... ;D ;D
I do actually think there may be a little more in the car yet..

Nice one. Where did the .5 second come from? 60ft to 1/8th mile?

60ft    1/8th ET   1/8th mph      1/4 ET      1/4 mph

...        7.55         90.75           11.97         110.6
1.58     7.52         90.87           11.91         111.97
1.58     7.45         90.90           11.86         110.83

I also think that i was racing Daz Chandler helped me alllot... ;D :D

I dunno why I thought it was half a second. My eyes are going funny.

So you gained the 10th between the 60ft and the 1/8th

Well done Rich !!  Do you feel the 51.5's are helping over the 48's....assuming the choke / venturi size and jetting has remained as was with the 48's ?  Or the stinger as you usually run with the muffler right on 12 zeros's ?

Thanks for sharing,

Shane.

yes the first time slip 11.97 was on the old setup so in total your right.. same track and conditions so i think the header and carbs did help..

I ran the 11.97 on 48's and muffler..

The 51's have not be jetted the same as the 48's the vents are bigger. They came straight of Daz's 2 litre motor and the A/F was pretty good so i left them as they were..
In reality i only run 42x37.5 valves so the 48's with 40 vents and the smaller header plus muffler should work better.. with larger valves it would go even better...
I will be building another motor with large heads and the 51's on soon so we'll see what numbers we get then..
So to answer your question.. honestly i don't know.. only a dyno would show the results properly.
