Title: Butternut recently discoverd photos
Post by: johnl on October 26, 2011, 19:39:19 pm
As some of you know I've been converting very old 35mm slides to digital and have uncovered much history of the early DKP days and also very early photos of TarBabe at the F&A shop prior to it becoming FAT along with some photos of my '63 VW when it was becoming the Butternut car.  I'll be sharing the TarBabe and early DKP stuff with you in the future.

You will now be able to see some interior shots and to my knowledge these are the ONLY ones that exist.  As memory recalls there were two different sets of gauges used in this format.  What you are seeing is Auto Meter and Stewart Warner I think.  Later I switch to the yellow face VDO gauges.  Switches are Lucas and you can also see the Butler steering wheel.  After this photo the steering column was removed and I found some really neat engine turned tape that was wrapped around it.  That tape matches the Hanline engine turned sill plates, headlight housing, etc.  The entire interior, sunroof, trunk and bra were done by Don Bradford, Brads Interior in Orange.  He was the best and a really cool guy.  There were a couple of helpers who worked with Brad and either Jim or Ron Fleming named one of them "Candy Face" as the guy was always eating the stuff.

You will see a rather young Jim (Sarge) Edmiston along with myself doing reassembly work on the car.  I think Jim had just turned 25 and I was 24.  Jim was very instrumental in assisting me putting the car back together and Jim if I didn't thank you then let me do it now.  Those were great times and always put a big smile on my face when I think of them.

There is one shot of my then young bride (21 years) , Christie, standing in front of the driver's side of the car at our first home.  In some of these shots you will see our 1970 vert, Reggie and Rag Top, as Christie named it.  For you locals this house stood where Palm St. met Harbor Blvd. in Garden Grove and has since been torn down and a medical building stands there now.

Dean, I'm thinking those shots were late September to late October of 1971.  All of the shots of Jim and myself were taken by Christie, infact she may have shot most of them.  Sarge was always a "spiffy guy".   ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Well, somehow the two photos above didn't get the text I sent with them.  The engine shot is my first "BIG" motor at 69x88 with a 110 Engle and really shaved heads that even pinged on Chevron White pump 103 back in the day.  Note the glass pack with the small tip.  That was the style prior to the quiet pack.  The engine was built by Ron Fleming at Berg's first shop on Lemon St. when Ron and Greg worked there.  Ron named it "Teats Two Barrell" which was kind as he thought of any motor with a pair of 48's "Asthmatic"

The garage shot is our '55 rather pristine sedan that I never did anything with.  I may have sold it to generate $$ to purchase the Doug (Underdog) Gordon - Bruce Crower (Crower Cams) '50 split window.  That car was sold to assist with the downpayment of our first house as every home prior was rented.  Here are the photos again.

I really can't express how much joy I get in sharing this stuff with you all.  Today I moved some cars around in our build starting with my M5 E39 BMW then on to a 1962 Chrysler New Yorker wagon and then a 1956 Lincoln Premier.  All of these are museum quality examples.

Then I dug out these photos to share and am so excited when I start doing this stuff I never want to stop, God I feel like I'm going to have a Heart Attack I'm so stoked.

After 64 years I think I've realized that cars are my drug of choice and people like all of you just make it that much better.  I'm so glad I got back into the VW scene and can share this stuff with people who are willing to listen to an old guy ramble on and on and on and on and on and on.  Well you get the idea....   ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Small typo on John's post, " Which was kind as he thought of any motor 'without' a pair of 48's asthmatics".

I too suffered this indignation as I ended up with Sarges two barrel motor. Which by the way ran very well in it's time.

Hi John, I love seeing all of these pics of yours, thanks for sharing them, You must have lived about an eighth mile from Palm-Harbor hospital, a place I came to know all to well back then, also across the street from the Firehouse Motel- nightclub, I noticed this from the background in the pics,  I also had a glasspack muff with the small tip like yours on the first motor I ever built for myself, a killer 40hp with 83mm big bore, 110 cam, Holley300cfm, p&p heads and headers, thought I was hot stuff  :D  till I saw what you guys had, I had to figure out a way to up my game :o    All of these pics are very special, I can hardly wait to see more!!!       KG

Phil is correct on the "typo".  I hammer these things out when time permits at work usually.  My boss is really tough on me, so I have to sneak them in without getting caught.    ;) ;) Also forgot to mention that with this motor the car ran 15.40's

Those motor shots with Holley 2 barrels is a classic.  Was the first set up I had on my motor as well. I don't know if you guys remember a company called EICO but for a short stint they were selling VW stuff. I think that is who I got my 2 bbl manifold from.  I actually used dual ports on my motor and they had a manifold for the dual port heads.  I will have to try and find a motor shot too.  The shots of your two cars really brings back memories of the period.

Hi Keith,  Yes Palm Harbor was just beyond the No Tell Motel which you can clearly see in the driveway shots.  I do remember the Firehouse Motel Nightclub across the street.  What comes to mind is one night the wind was howling and Christie and I sat in the living room looking at the Bank of America sign about 40 feet in the air moving around.  We were making bets with each other when it was going to come down.  It never did, but we had no $$ and found stuff like this to be good entertainment.

Rick, I do remember EICO.  Auto Haus also had those manifolds either in a plenum or isolated tube versions.  I never had one because I couldn't afford the DP heads.  I bought a BugSpray because it was about $35 and a 32NDIX Zenith was around $60.  It wasn't to long after the Butternut car was finished I managed to build the 78x88 motor with 48's and install it.  I thought I was on top of the world and Christie just shook her head...   :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Here is another shot of the finished car at a Bug-In I'm thinking in April of 1972.  You  can see the interior from the driver's side.  This was at the DKP display and the sign you see towards the front of the car I still have today.  Unfortunately it is one of the few physical items I have to remember those times and the car with.

I've been waiting to see pics like this for years, and the wait was well worth it.  Always has been and always will be my favourite bug ever.

Shame that my dash layout on my replica is different, but hey ho, kind of still keeps your car yours and mine more a homage to yours that an out and out replica.
Thanks for sharing John.

From my perspective it was a "magical" time.  I think growing up in the 50's into the early '70's was the best no matter what your flavor, (flavour) for you Keith, in cars was.  Guys that were "playing car" in the late 40's tell me the same.  The fact that we were in SoCal just made it that much better as that was and still is the Meca of the car world.  Don't believe me, just show up at Cars & Coffee in Irvine on a Saturday morning and you will become a believer.

Today's youth just don't look at cars the way we did.  With all of the electronics available cars are just another tool and nothing more for 99.9% of them.  I wonder if cell phones, calculators and computers were taken away from today's youth would they be able to function.  Somehow we made it through the "Stone Age" and had a great time doing it.

I'm pleased you are enjoying the photos and sorry it has taken me so long to deliver.  Your comment about your "favourite" flatters me beyond words, but I must say it is and was my "favourite" also.   ;) ;)

I'd advise all of you to keep good documentation in photos, the written word, etc.  What I'm sharing with all of you is all I have to remember the car and it's times.

Boy isn't that the truth! They don't have a clue.  I grew up in the '50s and wouldn't trade that experience for anything.  The car has always been the center of my universe.

This one is for Deano and Jim.  Another shot of Sarge's car in the driveway at the Butternut build.  I don't know who had the most changes in wheels over those years, but nothing lasted very long with either Jim or myself.  Jim, remember those trips to Johnny's Speed & Chrome or as we affectionately called it "Johnny's Chip & Peel"?  That would be when his retail shop was located at Beach Blvd. and Rosecrans Blvd. in La Mirada.

Johnny Hewey (sp) was a real character, but I'll save those stories for Rick Sadler as I'm sure he knows more than I.  One comment I will make is I'll always remember him in the back of that store where it was somewhat dark screaming out prices to people and had a huge wad of $$ in his hand.

Great photos.... Seeing that last photo of Sarge's car, reminds me of how it looked when I first rode in it at Bob's Muffler. Porsche caps all the way around, and 40P11s/1835. Loudest VW interior  I ever rode it!

IECO.... Sonny (Raoul) Balcaen's business.

John, I recall when you had your "big" engine built, I believe by Ron Fleming, or was it by Doug Hayden?

Your car always amazed me sitting in front of Auto Haus on Beach, how it kept so clean in that area, and two, how it didn't get smashed from behind by some crazed customer!

Hahaha!  My car had to be about eight years old when that pic was taken.  By then, it had been through a half dozen wheel and tire combos as well as countless exhaust (not to mention engine) modifications.  Then the "diet" happened when all the excess baggage got removed (switch to fiberglass seats, aluminum door panels, no headliner, no sound deadener, no ANYTHING).  Coupled with some of the first (noisy) close ratio gears and solid mounts, you'd feel like you were going a hundred mph all the time.  I'll take comfort nowadays! ;D

Dean,  The 78.4x88 48 IDA motor was built by me.  Ron did the heads but that was it.  I remember it's first run when I buried the throttle through each gear as I figured if it was going to come apart it might as well be then.  It stayed together and ran well.

I kept the car clean by wiping it several times daily in front of the AH store on Beach Blvd.  It was just luck than nothing ever hit it as there certainly was enough traffic to do so.  Keeping it parked in my sight made me more comfortable even with the dangers of the traffic.  I've located a black & white photo of the car parked in front of the AH store and the shot to the left is myself warning the official AH shirt provided by the company.  The guy in the shot with me is Jim (??) who also went to Anaheim High.  He would come in and spend hours and never buy a thong.   ::) ::)

Hey John, thanks fer sharing these cool photos! I was in that store several times, but it must have been a while after this shot was taken . . . . Muntz tapes? 4-tracks? Wow!
While in high school, I had a job at a company that was located right across the parking lot from the Auto-Haus warehouse. I bought stuff there instead of the store . . . the guys at the warehouse were really cool and gave me a discount on parts.

I still have a 4 track player and also one that plays 4 and 8 track with an FM cartridge.  Besides these I have boxes of tapes, mostly 4 track.  How many of you can say that?  Prior to the 4 track players I had a record player that sat under the glove box.  The play arm was mounted upside down and after a 45 finished it dropped into a holding area.  Worked well except when you hit bumps or railroad tracks.  While the record player was in use I also had a Vibrasonic.  Geeze, I'm really dating myself I think, so I'll shut up.    :-X :-X :-X :-X

Good photos John.  Yep...that was a lot of fun back then.  Still is, but I think especially that era in the OC was pretty special.

I still think the current DKP should re-do the old DKP club display like what was used at the Bug-Ins of the past, flags and all! I always thought it had a lot of class.

Yeah..I agree Dean.  DKP had by far the best looking club displays back then.    Always very well done.  It would be good to see a couple more pics of them.  Be even better to see one re-created at a upcoming Bug in.

Can't remember if this has been seen or not... Rick Meisner has the original I believe.  Seeing these old pics is like opening up a treasure chest full of fun memories. 8)

For those of you who want to see more DKP Bug-In shots I've created a separate topic.

Damn. Seeing your pics i realize i really was born in the wrong time and at the wrong place..
My god, I would do everything to live there and then (and still) :)

Oh yeah...

Not aware if you all know the green car on the right with the sign is my car pre Butternut.  Jim Edmiston did the sign and I still have it.

Hi John,

thank you very much for sharing these treasures! Watching old pics like these feels like using a Time-Machine. Makes me wanting to go to the shop and work on the car...

Sometimes you gotta love the Internet!

Regards from Germany,

Ole

Please post more!
