Great pics, thanks for sharing John.  The cars of course are very cool.  But another aspect I like is the people.  Seeing longer hair, lots of facial hair, and bell bottoms really gives the feel to the pictures of the time period.

Once again.... NICE PICTURES!!!  I have my own pictures that I've shared here from that event.  It's really cool to see some different shots.  Wild & crazy days indeed!  Zach hit it on the head with Greg Aronson's Porsche... the first was  a white (Fabs pic) "real" Porsche, the second was a glass kit car with the large Type IV motor.  It was light blue with a camel colored top.... bitchin' car that hauled ass!

It's soooooooo good for us (I mean european boys) to be able to have a look at all your pics John!

    Yes that's Greg's" real Porsche" 59 cabriolet with a "real motor" ;D a VW type1, 78x88, 40x35.5, w110engle, at first w48webers, later w42webers, for +fuel economy-less sound-more comfort etc.  This VW-Porsche hybrid was factually the (first VW engine) with dual mufflers, the intention was to make it quiet and still use the exhaust outlets through the bumper overiders on the Porsche.  A" funny thing "happened when we dynoed the motor,,,  ???  it made to much horsepower!!! I was building my 84x90.5, 42x37.5 w125engle 1.5/8merged motor at the same time so,,, if Gregs 1900cc made approx. 14hp more then it should, then mine should make more then we thought it should,,,and it did!!! ;D a freaking 19hp more!!! and the dual muffler trend was born  :) .      John and Fabs ,  thanks for the pics,  Great thread John.           KG

    Hey John, that's a good shot of Thurber's dash, I have been trying to obtain some and still think I can, but family issues with the people are making it tough.   There is something that appears to be hanging under the passenger side of Thurber's dash,,, its an 8track tape, he had his player mounted at an angle , in a hidden fashion, well it would have been hidden if he( DIDNT LEAVE A TAPE IN)!!!!!    ;D ;D ;D        KG

To see thoses places and meet some of you is something about dreams for us!

   If I remember correctly Greg sold the car to a great guy named Jim Lojudice (hope I spelled his last name right) I bought my B&Cmodel Porsche breaks for my choptop from him dirt cheap  ;D ,( thanks Jim).  To each his own on the rollbar, the only thing I would change about that car is the owner,,,TO ME!! Greg later built a Targa with the stainless roof piece painted the same as the car and some people didn't like it, mostly Porsche purists, but I thought it looked awesome!  That's the reason we build cars isn't it? to reflect our own tastes & personality... ;) ;) ;)          KG       AS USUAL OUR BUDDY FABS HAS THE PICS... ;D  Thanks Fabs.

I could have sworn there was a pic taken from the underside of the car's rear, with the caption noting that FAT came out with the first dual QP set up... of course, it could very well be the photo I'm thinking of is not of this particular car, but I seem to recall seeing a similar exit point for the tail pipes.

     Its true, at times I can be a trouble maker, mostly in a good way I hope  ??? no bad intentions anyway,  Hey John, true most gen.1 guys don't have VWs but most VWs have four seats  ;)  I think most gen.2&3 guys would be honored to have an OG.to ride along with em.    Neil, I knew Jim pretty well back then, his red 67 had two pinstripes done by" Shaky Jake "where the trim used to be , Jim was also friends with Walt (Walts Porsche service) in Santa Ana,and Scott Hendery (Scotts Orange Indepenent Porsche service) in Orange ,next door to Beckers Bug house, I dated Debbie Becker,( Leonard Beckers daughter) on and off for some time, VW - Porsche shops in O.C.where kind of a tangeled web of evrey body knows everybody

    A really nice detail to the pinstripes on Jim's car was the tips at the front & rear, they crossed top to bottom, one rotation, ending together in one sharp tip, and the stripes were two different colors & one thicker then the other, and like yours, you had to" look" to see all of this. The Pin striping was BadAss! very subtle.

After buying and selling about 25 VWs, in 1977 I finally found my Java green 67 in 1977!

Lowered and Dechromed it, NOS 5 spokes (bought at the Empi garage sale), 145/165 XZX's, then installed a 1835cc, Berg C/W crank, 110, Zenith and fourtuned exhaust.

I remember the "Toilet" very well. Sarge's single port motor ended up in it, less the Zenith. I bought that motor from Stan, with a Holley on it. Ran it for a year, racing

against my fellow NBVA club member Kris Klingaman. Those were good times...Too good to share all of them  ;D

Spent a little time today on the computer trying to put a road trip into reality and actually drove the Bug over to visit Canyon RV Park (part of Featherly Regional Park).  To put a long story short,
I was not permitted inside the park as they're not interested in letting non-RV types in... no day trippers, poparazzi, cruising, etc!!  Here's a link to the park as well as a map (our original photo

here's one at carlsbad with underdog II  ;)

 

Okay, another story.  One of the Carlsbad Drag events Stan Davis decided to be towed via a bus and it might have been the "Toilet".  Stan placed his backside on a trash can lid and hung on to the two rope.  He wasn't there very long as things got HOT...   :o :o :o :o

The other memorable event occurred in the very early morning hours.  We were all in line for the gates to open and it was COLD.  There was a large trash can and some of us found what ever we could burn to keep warm.  Someone got "creative" and placed part of the Carlsbad Sign in the car and as it started to burn the owner, think his name was Larry, arrived.  When he saw this he did pull the sign and went ballistics wanting to know how had done this.  We all stood thee silent and waited for him to tell us to leave and never come back. 

Somehow he calmed down and the even went on.  We won't mention any names here as to who supplied the sign to the fire, but as I recall his initials were "JE".  You guys figure it out......................    ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Someone got "creative" and placed part of the Carlsbad Sign in the car Carlsbad Sign in the car should read Carlsbad Sign in the CAN.     ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi Keith, It's been many years since we've talked or seen each other and thanks to the lounge here we are.

You are right about the Aronson '59 cabriolet.  Greg and I put together a package deal which you may remember.  I bought Greg's house that he and Jim Holmes shared for a while, he bought my mercedes for Jessica and I got the Porsche along with the house, remember that?  Anyhow, we put the Porsche motor back in the cabby with a 1750 kit and Greg driiled out the zenith manifolds and we put 42's on.  I later sold the car to Vasek Polak Porsche and he put it in his personal collection that was under his dealership.

Thanks for the paparrazi acknowledgements Bro ;D  As for the Toilet, I spent a load of time in the passenger seat with Greg at the wheel.  Back then, Greg was working out of his Dad's garage and I was fresh out of the Army trying to sell life insurance.  I spent WAY more time helping Greg by painting and installing the tin on the engines he was building.  We did all the parts chasing in the Toilet which had a bad habit of jumping out of fourth gear... to the point of Greg having to install a bungie cord under the seat to hold the shifter. ::) ;D  The high point of those days was 4:00pm when Highway Patrol came on TV.... BREAK TIME (time to siphon off a few beers from Dad's tapper).  Ah, the good old daze! 8)

For those among you who don't know Mr. Logudice, he is a true bespoken gentleman in the VW/Porsche community.
