You could get one of those later shift rods and move the shifter mount back to match. Then again in 73 VW moved the shifter back again another couple of inches. But they also moved the e-brake back too, so going with the 73 and later shift rod might be a bit more work.OTOH, I sure like the position of the 73 and later shifter compared to the 68-72 cars.
