I was hoping to rebuild one of my Bologna IDA but things look not so easy... Well, the shaft is frozen. I let the carb in W40, try quite everything smoothly but I'm afraid to make things bader as they are now... Any ideas??? Can I push on the butterflies??? I think not???

I will try that ASAP, but I was afraid heat would bend the shaft... !!! ???

have you taken a 48IDA apart before? This is an early 48IDA1 or 48IDA4 with the 4 digit serial number? Unless you have taken one apart before, I recommend a Weber expert.

Brass butterflies must be removed first or you will damage them. Corrosion on the jet stacks or venturies (both main or auxiliary-a white crud)?

Sounds like possible corrosion/rust between the throttle shaft and inner surface of roller bearing housing (either end)-possible but unlikely-
or a rusted bearing (rusted ball bearing that you can see?)-very likely-bearing will not rotate

You need an experienced weber expert.

If in doubt, send them to Art Traen   http://www.aircooledengineering.com/  They´ll know what to do.

Thanks guys! I will consider an expert as I am wondering how to remove butterflies with a frozen shaft that won't rotate... I suspect the bearings too....... I'll keep you posted...

Before to ship it try to put the carb in a Diesel gas can for few days and after first day try to rotate the axle, if those bearings are freezed they will smoothly start to rotate. you could even try with white petroleum that will be good for carbs body renewal too but Diesel will works better.

email Art or Pierce Manifolds-if you are in europe, there are weber experts in england. you have brass screws (you havent answered any questions on the condition of the carb) in the throttle plates. Brass is a very soft metal. Trying to do it yourself when you have never done it before (presuming) you risk damaging the original screws and the brass throttle plates-plates are replaceable/the screws are not.

The shaft bearings are press fit into the carb housing (both ends) and on end of the shaft. They normally do not move on the shaft as the assembly moves together. The ball bearings in the bearing assemblies that are in the carb housing are likely rusted and corroded and are frozen: that means the shaft assembly through the carb housing will not turn because the ball bearings in either or both of the bearing assemblies pressed into the carb housing are rusted/frozen solid (take off the small round plate on the shaft end that covers each of the bearing assemblies that are press fit into the carb housing: you should be able to see and determine the condition of the ball bearing assemblies).

A frozen throttle shaft is a serious situation. It most likely is a frozen thottle bearing and that is a serious matter.
