Thanks! The cookies are my street combo and the Gasburners are my strip/street (show off) combo. Those MH DOT`s is sure interesting on the road. The paint is unfortunately one click more blue compared to Bahama. I have the color code in my garage.

Thanks Mat - bus stoppers next!

Guys, one confession - I actually like Porsche glasses in the headlamps - it makes the front look a little bit more aggresive. I know it`s not according to the book but when I first noticed them on your car Mat they started to grow on me... hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Just don't give it such a hard time?
:P

...I actually like Porsche glasses in the headlamps - it makes the front look a little bit more aggresive...

I'd say they probably suit the lines of a mid sixties Bug than they do the earlier ones but that's not to say I dislike them on an earlier car. I'm not having much luck with mine, in 2 years I've lost a couple to stones, do you think the angle of the originals may be more deflective?
 :P

Maybe I should drive it slower?

Her's my 65... i got this car for free of my uncle, he has used it since I was a kid, so it has a history for me. It has looked like this the whole time... but I do admitt to fitting the JAP wheels and the burners. In this pic its what you can call a cal-look-a-like. But soon it will be in the thirteens.

This is my European (France) 65 that was imported to Canada. 3rd owner of this original paint beetle. It was a bone stock car before I got my hands on it.

Alan, the interior in your car is quite awesome.

Thank you.

The biscuit cut style seats are double stitched. Richard Ducharme (dvkk) did my seats to perfection. My headliner has the dry cracked age look in the rear parcel area and the square weave is original. Richard's made a custom blue german square weave and custom 60's ford lunar pattern headliner (dots no uniform like the vw "dot" pattern"). The headliner and carpet have not been installed yet due to my time schedule and Richard's busy one. My 65 isn't pretty but I'm not that concerned since I can drive it anywhere and everywhere. I'll jump in and crack 12.00- 12.2's with North american pump gas at the track then the following day I'll drive her to work. Absolutely a blast to drive.

Swapped my hurst for a CSP unit and just love it!!

People actually like my beetle???  ;D

I'll be honest. I really have a passion for this old 65. When I go to a Vdub car show I see all sorts of old Vdubs in various conditions. Pristine phenominal show cars to real daily drivers far from the trailor queen world. Regardless I still admire people that have an interest in the old aircooled cars.

My car started as an absolutely bone stock unmolested car. Lanny Hussey (dvkk) gave me a lead to a great car with excellent potential.

My good friend Darren Krewenchuk (dvkk) aka Kroc has ported all of my heads I've ever owned. We were playing around with a set of CB SE2000 heads with 46x38 racemaster valves and chevy valvetrain.

These little dinky small ports made my car run consistant 12.5's in the 1/4 all day long.  That picture has aprox 65cc intake port volume. If you want to put things into perspective its probably the same volume as a small round port CNC 044 head!!!

Kroc then retouched the heads with his magic and opened them up.  Darren and I went to the track and he said "what do you thnk she'll run now?" I said "If I can touch 12.30's I'll be happy"  I did this!!! I recall shifting at 7400 rpms or less.

http://members.shaw.ca/vdubstuff/11sec_run.htm

That year I was running 12.00s with my 9.4:1 c/r engine. Mind you my car is NOT a dedicated drag car whatsoever. I drove that car whenever it didn't rain (spring/summer/fall).

The following year I bought another set of SE's and darren played with alot of his ideas and with smaller ports I was still running 12.00's consistantly but never broke into the 11.90s. I called Mark Herbert to shoot the breeze and I was telling him I was itching to do 11's consistantly and I felt stuck , his comment was "That sucks man!!!"  We both laughed. Man I miss that guy.

combustion chambers are tight and not unshrouded radically. Unshrouding gives people the sense of bigger cfm's on the flow bench but at the track they perform poorly.

I've been using the same CB2289 cam for years. This is the mild ramp cam thats been giving me great results.. This year I'm trying the fk47 but I think my new virgin 2332 is getting its lifters bores destroyed by that ramy cam. Time to put my other 2332 back together soon.

The rest of the engine is the typical mag case, Scat H beams, 84mm DMS full circle crank wedgemated to a german lightened fly, 3.5 qt GB sump to keep the oil from getting sucked dry. I made NO more power with my 50.5's compared to my 48mm IDA's.

Last year I tried the CB ti valves on the street with "regular" hardened valve seats. OOPS!!!! bad mistake.  Less than 1000km and the valve lash changed every week!!! I tried a 48mm valve last year and it killed my MPH and my car slowed down 2 tenths.  Goes to show bigger isn't better in all cases. The Ti's are coming out of my street car heads.

pump gas is so damn hard to get big HP numbers while retaining decent driveability. The ugly duck is the "MAN" and I'm the "BOY" when it comes to pump gas quick cars. If I flycut my heads and ran racegas, running 11's is extremely easy without any effort whatsoever. I cannot have my 65 sitting in my garage. It was built to be driven so I've given myself a challenge to have a dual purpose car. Dont laugh but my 6V radio (with voltage step down) works great  ;D I guess my point of owning this car is to have fun :)

I like all street cars capable of doing 11`s on the strip and your car is simply amazing, thank you for sharing all the info and the pictures. So to understand you correctly, have you tried the FK47 cam or have you decided not to use it?

The fk47 is in my new shortblock and my 2nd oil change is concerning me right now. I'll probably crack the case to see whats going on. I speculate a lifter bore starting to oval out. Next to no magnetic material in the oil but a shiney silvery sheen like mag case material (i believe)

The FK47 sure does have more grunt than my 2289 at low rpms. Odd that the fk47 is a larger duration cam but very fast ramping (lifter bore eaters  :o  )

In a way that car that kept me in VW's, I wanted to go fast and that thing proved to me you could combine a big motor with a daily Bug.

Up until last year, Alan's gearbox used a 4.12 O type R&P with a stock 9 tooth mainshaft and 1.58/1.22 Weddle gears.  The superdiff used 10/15 gears, all in a late case and SAW axles.  With this he ran into the 11s and did those wheelies.

His latest gearbox uses a G type 3.88 R&P and a 4.11/2.47 Weddle mainshaft, with 1.65/1.31 gears.  A Q replaced the superdiff.

Yes it did, I swapped last season. I wanted good disc brakes without all the weight and cost of CSP brakes. I run original VW rotors drilled for the Porsche pattern and BMW 2002 calipers.

Hi,
Could you tell me a bit about the turbo set up,

Hello Lee thanks a lot, the setup is a A.J. Sims Turbo setup which I am really happy :D about. No matter what others might tell you, I am very happy with the knowledgeable help and the workmanship of these Turbo systems.

It is a T3 Turbo paired with a Holley 350 carburetor plus a Mallory HyFire ignition with map sensor and boost retard. It is a blast to drive!  ;D

No, his gears are all pure street gears with stock synchros.  'cause his car is a STREET car, not a race car.  That's why he took the huge weight penalty with a Quaife over a spool.

Hi Dom,
Thanks for the info. Like the look of the kit. Are you using the 1600T kit? What times you run with it on the motor (spec)?
I have a mild 1776cc that would respond well to that.

Hello Lee, I have two engines, one was used to get the car street legal in Switzerland, the other is my street/strip motor. The motor I used for getting the car legal is a 1600cc engine with small FI heads with only 32x30mm valves. I installed a Webcam 119 and dual valve springs and chromoly pushrods. That is it... with only 0.4 bar (5.6 PSI) boost it delivered a whopping 121 HP at 5100 rpm. The quarter mile time leaves room for improvement I ran 15.06 with street tires, 8 PSI boost and a whopping 2200 pounds total weight. I weigh 310 lbs myself.... I know I should go on a diet. Currently I am loosing weight for the upcoming season... It is very nice to drive, but I am going to replace the cam with a webcam with an original VW grind. This will the rpm range to below 5000rpm and make the turbo more responsive.

My engine for this coming season is a 1915cc with piston squirters, the proper LBC2 cam and a better ignition system. I hope to scratch the 200HP mark with a bid more boost...this and a little less weight should improve my quarter mile time this year.

Your 1776 will love the turbo treatment. Just keep in mind not to over cam your engine and keep the CR low. 7.5:1 will do.

Cheers Dom 8)

yes, it's a 66 Standart with M-Option (chrome-trim),
a friend told me, that VW was selling the Standart's with the steering column and -wheel from early Oval's, because they have produced too much parts.

but the trim is my dilemma, as i allways want a bug with or without chrome
i think know it's too unusual for modifying

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the nice comment on my car!  The engine is now a 1915cc scat parts motor with Scat mini D-port heads, Eagle 120, Italian 48 IDA's, Bosch 010, dynomax exhaust with S&S and it runs great on the street.  We allways drive to shows all over Europe so the street action is more inportant to me than the strip action.

DKK Fred: I have two engine decklids: An normal one with the 1300 sign on it, but 11 years ago I bought a convertable decklid and that one has no sign.

I like the 1967 model a lot and I agree that it is a good base for a callooker, but 65-66 models are also very nice as a start and it makes me happy to see that other people loves this model too!

In 1997 when my car was just finished, the callookscene was very low at that time.  DAS was coming up with some nice cars, like Pat's Beryl green ragtop on BRM's(still on the strip today!!!), Kobus' 1964 sunroof sedan inported from the USA with real BRM's and lot's of Empi stuff (he still owns the car today) and the twin's had there 1963 turkish green beetle witch was stolen later on (we all regred it up till today as it was an owesome car) and of course Ffred's 1957 big window beetle who was the first with a stroker motor I guess.  Those were the days....

Very nice... do you have any plans to install a 1300 badge on the convertible 'lid? Either that one or the VW1300 would look great on your car.

I don't think so.  The vert lid is still in very good chape after 11 years of good care with the paint, so I don't want to drill holes in it.

Out on test with a mechanic "who shall remain nameless " not to sure of the exact circumstance's but he manage to become the fifth car in a five car pile up on a fast road with hidden dips  :'(
Not a great deal left of the front end to the B posts after that  :( Salvaged quite a bit from it but the car itself was beyond saving  :-\

Here is a picture of my Cal-look. It don't have any engine ready yet but it's on the way. Got the last parts for the gearbox today so next step will be the engine. I show a picture from last year's engine. This is closeto how it will look like this year also. This was a Resto-looker last year so there will be some more modifications before it's done.

Bryan Wenzel's 1965 Bug at Sacramento raceway 1997... guess it is more of a "pre cal look" car with its 356-style wheels and stock height. At this time the car had a hot 1700 motor with Heads Up Perf heads and 40mm Webers. Car was all orig until Bryan (only) added big motor and trans. Rest of car was as VW built it.

Here's a pic of my 66, which is officially known as the "Hooptie".  I bought it at a local auto auction looking like a total piece of crap.  About 14 months later it looked like this. ;)

(http://www.german-pride.com/gallery2/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1479&g2_serialNumber=2&g2_GALLERYSID=bd99320f701dec550c14c5e4036269f5)

(http://www.german-pride.com/gallery2/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=1383&g2_serialNumber=1&g2_GALLERYSID=bd99320f701dec550c14c5e4036269f5) (http://www.german-pride.com/Joomla/index.php?option=com_gallery2&Itemid=43&g2_itemId=568)

The car was driven as it looks above for 16 months and then I dropped the reliable little 1776 in favor of a nice stout 2276 with 48 IDFs.  Heck, a lot of you were over my place for the Vegas Pre Event BBQ when we stuck it in and started it up! ;)  I must admit, the car is a lot more fun now! ;D

I've got a whole gallery on the build up if you care to see it.

Indeed a very cool car to start with.  It has less rust than most of the VW Golf III models running around Belgium.  It's always nice to start from a good car with not to many KM done.  I started restoring my 1966 beetle with 97000 km driven from 1966 till 1972 (last tech controle card came with the car) and that helps to get an easy resto (hey it was my first one, so it had to be easy).  I know the difference because the 1957 lowlight is an other story  ::)

Wow, Tero! For a second, I thought that was my car. Love the wheels on that.

Died, yes... I had Vee Dub Seat Covers (Suzy) stitch the entire interior in brown naugahyde. Then, I installed a black carpet kit in the cabin and also he trunk. It was very plain, the way I wanted it, 'cause most people were going with the cloth inserts and I wanted to be different.

Mark, are you on a night shift?
Sounds good. I'm usually not a big fan of dark-ish interiors but this one must have looked good. An orange car doesn't leave any options colourwise, and brown is not the most obvious choice of all. Nice!
p.s. any news on that VIN #? ;)

No night shift... talking with an old friend and ready to go to bed. The v.i.n. can't be checked by my friends and relatives in law enforcement. There is one more place where I might have some luck.

Now I can re-use the joke in Leasure Suit Larry; "it's covered in naugahyde - wonder how many Naugas had to give their all."  ;D

Here is my 66 Sunroof.

Ercos, 2276, M&Hs...A great running and driving car....I love the thing. Shame it may go to help pay for Mean Green but we all have to give up something sometime. The beam is narrowed adn I would prefer a stock width in it.

Enjoy.
