Any more info on this ANYONE ??? Title: Re: Pictures needed: Anyone got any detailed pic's of "Zundfolge" PLEASE :) Post by: hotrodsurplus on December 15, 2011, 22:29:54 pm Hmmm "Webster 5 speed straight cut gearbox" Any more info on this ANYONE ??? Webster manufacture gears for racing. The company's five-speed conversions were based on Type I transaxles and from what experience I had with them they were made primarily for off-road racecars. I think it was early '80s. Again, from memory fifth gear was above reverse for a true H pattern (with three legs, of course). And I believe that they traded synchros for shift dogs. But I never drove one so I couldn't tell you for sure. I'm no expert. But I HAVE driven driven cars with Hewland straight-cut gear stacks. It takes considerable practice and timing to shift and you MUST match-rev to downshift while rolling. They were obnoxious loud in the Formula Fords that I drove and those were open cars. I can't imagine the racket in a Beetle shell. Dude I have been driving an ORIGINAL 51 split all summer with a FULL CRASH box so I have had a bit of practice ;) :) Does anyone know if the car still runs this Webster 5speed ??? You know it well. We have a car with a '38 Ford gearbox. Only three gears, none of which feel like they're in the right place in a heavier car that has an engine with a bit of cam. I just got off the phone with Eric, the guy who shot/wrote that feature. He said he stayed at Dave's house in West Babylon and shot the car in his driveway. He was there during the Islip sanitation strike so you could say there was a sanitation issue. He said the club Dave was in was going to build a bus but it was just hashed--the bottom foot of it was gone and it looked like it'd been slid on its side. They told him it was the best they could find on the east coast. Later as a joke they sent him a Mason jar filled with a few VW parts and a bunch of rust and the title pasted to the outside like a label with a note that said that's what most old VWs look like in New York. Bear in mind that was 25 years ago!
