Title: Rarest of the rare Gene Berg find
Post by: Pierside Parts Unlimited on January 12, 2012, 21:26:49 pm
Ok, here is the rarest of the rare! Gene Berg* matches from pre 1975.
These have the old address and phone number from the original Orange location.

These have survived only because Gene was such an anti smoker that he blew a gasket when Dee had these made and he wouldn't allow them to be given away.

These are in perfect condition for a pack of matches dating pre 1975.
Very few are available so grab one today for your collection!!

I do not know if these still light as I haven't tried any.

*These matches were not manufactured, modified, altered, balanced or any other process performed by Gene Berg Enterprises, they are merely matches with the Gene Berg text printed on them from pre 1975.

I had heard that berg modified the grit in the striker area to provide a more consistant light.  The instructions that came with the matches also noted not to bring other brand matches to him for repair, and noting that other matches might look just like his, but do not have the correct grit as specificed ny the tobacco compamies.

Pick of the litter.  Also I think the matches were modified for lower "burn rate" as to live longer when lighting your smoke in day to day life.

I noticed it has the Lemon St. address which predates the current Lime St. location.

I went to Lemon St. address once.

I heard once that some guy in a blue sedan actually used wood matches and Gene just shook his head in disbelief.  But by that time there was no stopping it; many would start to use wood matches.

Shortly after going to work for F&A (early 73) I walked in the door to GBE for the first time, to pick up a parts order, I was smoking a cigarette and had ignored the " NO SMOKING "sign posted outside   :o   Needless to say , Gene and I got to" know" each other really well , really fast!!!    ;D                       I no longer smoke.  R.I.P.  Gene , Thanks for everything.....

If any other VW parts supplier has modified these matches in any way, please don't call the Bergs with any questions an why they don't work properly, or ask to have the Bergs repair them.

Further - "They" say that matches made this way burn too hot and won't work. First of all I want to know who "they" are and where "they" got there data from.
 ;D

Long live the BERG's!!
