Title: Mechanical Distributors
Post by: RichardinNZ on April 02, 2012, 13:18:55 pm
I currently have a stock 36hp in my '58 Bug, but plan in the longer term to add some 'vintage speed'; probably WW/Okrasa dual port heads and dual carbs etc.  However, in the mean time I have been offered at VJ4 BR8 Distributor (which I think according to Glenn's website is an earlier version of the '019').  It'd be good to get it whilst I can but I'm also spending money on other things at the moment!

Whilst my other VWs have all had stock engines I've always ended up with a '009' on them, perhaps in part by reading John Muir's book in my early days of VW ownership.  I recall he suggested replacing vacuum distributors with mechanical advance (although I'm not sure if I remember why).

Over the years I've managed to convince myself that whilst not improving power or performance, the '009s' made the cars drive better/differently.

Any thoughts, or would I be wasting my money on the VJ4 BR8?

Thanks
Richard

The 019/VJ4BR8 will work fine on a Okrasa engine, but the 010 will be better.

Thanks Glenn
Out of interest, is the total advance from the all mechanical VJ4BR8 similar to the combined vacuum/mechanical advance of the VJU4BR8 that is stock on 36hp engines?
Many thanks
Richard
