Title: Trouble fitting stacks?
Post by: Jared on April 15, 2012, 21:26:53 pm
So I'm trying to fit my first pair of Ida's and I would like to run some larger stacks from Jaycee or other companies. I can not get they to fit under the deck lid  to save my life. I put the stock ida stacks on and still won't clear real well. Just wondering if someone has any input on this and maybe has some photos to share?

Jared,
Yep, unless you're going to run short manifolds, decklid stand-offs or a lower latch extension to partially open it, most all of us will have problems with clearance for the IDA stacks ... especially the larger billet ones!
Outside of those methods mentioned you'd have to cut the interfering stack for clearance.
Don't know another way around it, sorry to say.

Even running stock stacks on some cars with wider engines you may need to clearence the stack slightly or run an open decklid.

Just the price we pay to run bitchin carbs!   8)

I'm not sure what to expect on a motor close to stock width, runnign IDA's in a '67 sedan.  Ideas?

Depends on manifolds. Width isn't as big of a factor as manifold design and height.

My 2165 is about 1/8" narrower than a 1600 and my #2 stack still hits the decklid with Scat Traks.

My manifolds are the tall Empi manifolds.

They only fit under the deck lid with short manifolds like mine :-)

I used tall Bugpack manifolds on Asshull's 1915, the runners are not symmetrical so it gives more clearance for the #2 stack. Fits with the decklid closed. Symmetrical manifolds may be better for performance, but if they are not short, the carbs will not fit under the stock closed lid.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I'll have to do some more research.

I prefer to open the decklid because it really blocks the flow for stacks on cil 2 & 4.

I had to cut the stack on the right side to clear the decklid.

Have any idea on how much you had to cut?

Have any idea on how much you had to cut?

I want to say it was about 3/8" to 1/4" so that's what about 9-7mm.

The way I did is I took a cut with a dremel cut off wheel and then I started to close the decklid and stopped when I felt it touch. After I got it clear, I used silly putty (Think Pla-Doh or modeling clay) until I had the clearance I needed.

Are there any places that may still sell the bug pack "off set" manifolds still?

I would think, by appearances at least, and I may all wet (;D), that you would want the decklid offset to allow for more air flow with the larger stacks?  Am I dead wrong in my thinking?

I thought I'd post a picture of a famous car to illustrate the issue...

My new motor I just put together is about 13mm narrower than it was before.  I'm thinking this will only help my fitment.
