Title: 3.78 & 2.25 mainshaft Post by: pupjoint on June 20, 2012, 17:20:25 pm any idea who makes them? found a set, but no markings anywhere.
any of these aftermarket MS as strong as the VW ones? also found a 1.36 3rd, 002 course teeth. currently on stock ratios, not sure if it is worth to keep the above as well for future project. Title: Re: 3.78 & 2.25 mainshaft Post by: Bruce on June 21, 2012, 06:03:16 am Gears are not forged, they are machined from bar stock.
Typically, the aftermarket mainshafts are stronger than the VW part they replace. They exist because of racing. Weaker wouldn't cut it. The 3.78/2.25 mainshaft you have may be a genuine VW part. Eric at ERCO once told me that the 2.25 second is weak. A stock 2.06 is stronger. And that is why the aftermarket mainshafts don't come in a 2.25 ratio. It is the tooth count that makes it weak. Can you post a pic? Title: Re: 3.78 & 2.25 mainshaft Post by: pupjoint on June 24, 2012, 11:17:48 am Gears are not forged, they are machined from bar stock. I never ran one but remember them being sold. After my first mainshaft {3.78x2.05} super beetle mainshaft modified by Sam ( RANCHO) at the Gear box shop I purchased a BERG 3.78/ 2.31 around 1988 and ran it until I went turbo a couple years ago. Alot of the spliced shafts were done by LIBERTY back in the days . FTC sold alot of differant gear sets and were very good quality . Mike McCarthy

Berg will make one up for you if you want one, by splicing an autostick 2nd onto a 9 tooth mainshaft. |
