Title: Hot Vw Drag days vs. Bug In's
Post by: Larry S on June 23, 2012, 15:48:05 pm
I was out washing the cars this morning and was thinking.....The Bug In's are talked about all the time but in the late 70's early eighties the Hot Vw's Drag Day's were my favorite events. No disrespect to the show car guys (I later became one) but the Drag Days were what is was all about for me at the time, lots of fast VW's. Don't get me wrong, I spent a lot of time looking at Frenchy's Ghia, Martinez's chop, Mike Mabe's wild Ghia, and all the rest of amazing cars of the years but.....a regular bug, dumped in the front, wide 5 centerlines, stinger sticking out of the back, deck lid propped, and the 48IDA velocity stacks showing just a little was the coolest thing ever to me. My tastes have change some over the years but that look still sticks out in my mind. Most of them didn't have wild high dollar paint jobs, in fact most were original paint with some turtle wax applied at the last minute, all the money was in the drive train. You never knew if it was going to run 14's or 11's until it ran down the track. Just an old guy thinking............................

I agree. Showcars for the eyes and old bad cars with all the money in the engine for the ears. I like both but old fast with stinger ,this is  ;D
The good old times.

You are welcome Frenchy, and thanks for your amazing cars you have built over the years. I wore out the issue of Hot Vw's that had your Ghia at Knott's Berry Farm in it. You inspired me to redo my 57 Oval rag street car way back in the early eighties. It still has the Santini paint from back then, Mr. Richie owns it now and has looking better then ever, I am proud of that car.

Dominic,
nice to hear from you also, glad you got to see my Mom at Deb's. Mom and Dad are doing great and enjoying retirement in Arizona. We had a ball at all of those VW races back then, worked our butt's off and enjoyed every minute all of it. My brother and I were talking on the phone awhile back and were laughing at how many clutches we but in over the years. Seems like every weekend someone needed a new clutch put in, nothing like new clutch second gear chirps!
