Title: Leaking oil from cylinder 3
Post by: Erlend / bug66 on June 25, 2012, 23:04:21 pm
Hi everybody.

My retty beefy 1915 has a problem holding it's fluids. 1,2 and 4 s completely dry, but #3 is wet. It's dry above the middle of the cylinder against numer 4, so it's not the cooler.

Cylinders on the left side is off, and I can't find any cracks. All casesavers look fine (can't really see the deep stud)

Have any body had a leak between the block and the cylinders?

Or is it a crack in the deep stud area?

It's possible sometimes that when you're drilling to insert the deep #3 stud, you poke a hole into the case.  Even though you are plugging it with the stud, oil will still flow as if it's a big hole.

Ist it possible that there is a small scratch in the case surface or the case saver is not in deep enough and the cylinder rests on it,or just the sealant you used is not 100%,is it dry behind the flywheel?

cheers richie

I got the casesavers I changed deep enough, so the surface between cylinder and case is good.

Looks to be dry behind the FW yes.

My guess is really thin oil (10W-40 synth) combined with a hot engine and missed a spot of sealant under the cylinder.

had a porous case once in a bay,had to run it on floor with no tin to find leak, coming out of case on top from gallery to oil cooler .that ran down onto no3.
