Title: Vintage Bicycles, Anyone?
Post by: Zach Gomulka on July 06, 2012, 20:21:57 pm
Been having a bunch of fun messing about with old bikes lately. Just as fun as cars, yet you get to the end result so much quicker and with so much less money!
I found this bike, a 1951 Monark Super Deluxe on Mother's Day at a local automotive swap meet:

I bought it for the girlfriend, but in that condition she was not exactly bursting with excitement! So I completely disassembled it, cleaned, polished, detailed, and re greased and rebuilt it. The seat and pedals were incorrect, so I sourced originals and restored them. I stitched up a creme leather seat cover with a gold French seam to match the pinstriping. I coaxed the headlight and the horn (inside the tank) to work again :) I finished it a few days ago, it rides like a brand new bike. And she loves it!

A few months ago I started my hot rod :) Searching eBay late one night, I found this 1960 Schwinn Jaguar frame, fork, and chain guard in orginal paint black. And it just happened to be local! I contacted the seller and picked it up the next morning.
(http://img.tapatalk.com/aefe179f-9057-fedc.jpg)
Originally these Jag's were top of the line models, and came with a headlight, tank, front and rear racks, and obnoxious polished stainless steel fenders. I searched and found a set of Schwinn Typhoon original paint black fenders and bobbed both ends of the front fender, and a bunch off the back of the rear fender. I also found a chain ring from a 70's Schwinn that was just begging to be detailed with some black paint :)
(http://img.tapatalk.com/aefe0a3c-f364-17d6.jpg)
(http://img.tapatalk.com/aefe101d-2315-df60.jpg)
I took a couple of old Bendix 2 speed kickback hubs and built one with super tall gears. Mounted the hubs up to some brushed aluminum hoops with new stainless spokes. Tires are 2.35", much fatter than the 1.75" that was originally fitted to this frame.
I recently slammed the seat, and found a neck that let me drop the flipped bars down and back further. Did some pinstriping here and there, etc. It's almost done, and a ton of fun to ride!

Hey Tom, is that a new 24 inch QUAD??? Are those graphite tuff wheels?
If I remember correctly the graphites had campagnolo hubs !!!

I still have a few old bikes.. used to have a bit of a collection but that was years ago..

For starters, my 67 Schwinn De Luxe..
Found this one on Craigslist a few years ago. Original paint, tires, period sissy bar, etc.

Here's a couple more..

J.C. Higgins tank cruiser.. I think it's about a 1953 or so.
The ladies bike is a 1939 B.F. Goodrich (made by Schwinn)

Both bikes are original paint and in pretty good shape for the age..

Cool bike! I built one like that in '78. Mine was green & white from the factory with that very same paint scheme. First time around, I restored it in Schwinn Sky Blue. Later, I did all in black. Not period perfect with a few components, but I've enjoyed it for many years. Yes... I still have it and it rides great. My serial number suggests that mine's a '48.

Wow, beautiful collection! I'd love to own one of those alloy Monarks. Would have to be a 26" though.

Here is a shot of my other Silver King with 26" wheels with after market alloy wheels and after market springer front end. You can put 26" wheels on any Silver King frame because the frame size is 26" size. [attachment=1][attachment=2]

What makes Rob's bikes even better... they get ridden. I can't stand bikes or cars that are built/restored and end up not getting any usage. Cool seeing both of those alloy bikes on the last ride, Rob!

All the bikes posted so far are awesome! I'm a "newbie" to this scene but I agree that from a time and cost stand point, you do get gratification much sooner and cheaper. Plus, it gets me off the couch and exercising.  ;)
Not sure if this qualifies as "vintage" but here's mine:

1965 Schwinn Typhoon I picked up off of eBay. It is a work in progress but I'm going for an OG "rat-roddy" kind of look. No plans to repaint the frame or fenders; just clean up or replace the brightwork as needed and customize as I go. Keeping the original white "S7" rims for now as well.

Right after we got it home.
[attachment=1]

Current phase. Added the Schwinn springer and swept-back handle bars.
[attachment=2]

Lot's of "patina" on this one, but I like it!  8)

Rick, your bike looks GREAT! Can't wait to see it on our ride this morning. You have the only Corvette that I like... one built by Schwinn. All others are inferior.

Thanks Guys!

Took it for it's first real ride today. 11+ miles.

The seat sucks and the 2-speed won't shift into low.
Other than that it runs like a champ.
