I’ve just turned 40 and having a mid life crisis!  :o

So I thought this is the perfect time to start back on the NSU Prinz 4. It all started back in 2008 when us guys were discussing what types of non VW bodied race cars with flatfour engines had been made over the years and what other models would make good race cars.
 
A few weeks passed and I was visiting my friend Frank (WhiteTrash) on here. He had a Hillman Imp at his workshop and I made a comment referring to the discussion a few weeks before that it would be cool to put a flatfour engine in the Hillman to race. At this point Frank suggested the NSU Prinz as it was very similar to the Hillman, we both laughed at the idea and thought nothing of it until I received a text from Frank telling me that there was an NSU Prinz for sale on the Isle of Wight on Ebay, But It was missing a door and needed some welding. Now bearing in mind that the Isle of Wight is off the South Coast of England, it is also the most expensive crossing per distance….so we scrapped that idea.

A week later Frank sent me a link to the German Ebay with an NSU Prinz for sale, I don’t know why but in a moment of madness I put a bid in for €250 thinking that I would be out-bided. Unfortunately I won it as I was the only person to place a bid!
As it was all Frank’s fault,  :D I told him that he had to come with me to collect it plus the fact that he is German would make the exchange easier.

Early, very early on Saturday morning 21st February we sailed from Dover to Dunkerque, travelling through France, Belgium, Holland and finally a to a little place deep in north Germany somewhere. It took so long to get there that we stayed overnight and came home on the Sunday.

Back in the UK: The idea was to store it until we had some spare time as we already had our own projects on the go.
I had to go to the workshop a few weeks later for something and to my surprise Frank had already started. He had stripped and started some welding on it. Things like the engine, gearbox etc.. Were sold to fund the project.

Fast forward 4 years to now and a wet weekend in June ::) I decided it was time to start on the car again. So I called Frank and ask if I could come over a pick it up. It still need a bit of welding doing to one of the sills. Which me and my friend Russ finished off, as the plan was to take it up to Jim Smith of ‘Cotswelds Race Cars’ ( www.cotsweld.co.uk ) to have a roll cage and ladder bar set up. When we got to Jim's we when over what was needed to be done to the car. I was keen to keep it stock height as I was wanting to do a Gasser looking car, but Jim talked me into running the car a low as he could get it. One for safety at high speed and two it will look far better. :) To achieve this he would have to narrow the front wishbone suspension by 6" allowing for the 15" ercos to fit under the arch, as the car came with 12" wheels. Moving on the the back of the car he going to shorten a pair of axle tube by 10" over all to take the 5in short race axle. Jim have also sectioned the arches so that the 15" wheels fits in and looks factory. Next Jim will move on the ladder bars, roll cage and frame to hold the gear box (Photos to follow) when finished.

The pictures below are a mock up of how the car will eventually sit. I will continue to update this thread with the progress and pictures as Jim continues the work.

As for the rest of the car the plan is to fit my 2109cc IDA motor out of my bay window to start with, followed by a small turbo motor when it’s dialed in. Colour, well I haven’t decided yet but I’m sure there will be Gold in it somewhere! ;D

Today took my 2109cc motor apart for a fresh up before putting it in the car when ready to. Everything was OK apart from two of the lifter bores, in the mag case. So will be sending it off to have all eight sleeved. 

What about the nut behind the steering wheel? Are you gonna fix that, too?  ;D ;D ;D

you need to raise it a few inches, don't think you have accounted for the driver!!!! :P

Remembering this tiny cars this is going to be a challenge to get the engine in there.
Is there enough clearance to the rear apron?

Yes it with just fit in the hole, but we are going to have to cut a little of the rear apron away.

   Are you planning to use a VW transmission? And if you are do you have pictures of the rear suspention set up. I am planning to fabricate the front to support the VW beam.

Yes going with a VW trans there going to be a cage coming off the roll cage to hold it in place. This is the next job on the list along with the ladder bar set up. Will update with photos of it here as soon as done.

As for the front I wanted to do a VW beam setup to. But after talking with Jim we think it would have been a hard ride with six + inch taking out of the beam and cutting down the leaf spings. I did not want to remove any of the spings to make it a soft ride.  So that why we are keeping the NSU suspention as it a wish bone setup.

Thank You for your quick reply I am working on my 1929 Ford Track T for the moment as I have someone else helping me with the NSU. As soon as you have pictures of the rear suspention please post them so I have an idea how it will look.

Just out of interest are you going IRS as I can see in your photo the box you are using for a mock up is.

We are going swing axle and using a 5 inch shorter race axles, to allow the use of a 6W Pheonix slick.

  Yes I will be using this IRS for this project. This is the transmission that originally was out of Dean Lowry's super beetle Bonneville car and Dean did not use it.

Hilman Imp would be the same as the NSU. Would have done one if I had not had got the NSU.

A couple of reasons one being I had one about 38 years ago, in fact we went to the Motor Show when they introduced and they arranged a test drive in a Sunbeam Imp but could not afford one then. :-) The other reason I prefer the back as opposed to the Stilleto, just not keen on that shape fastback.

There are plenty I'd like to do! Always fancied an early '60's Corvette roadster with a pair of IDAs sticking up through the rear deck! It'd really upset the V8 boys, and it would be so easy to do with a floorpan, like a grown up beach buggy! Closer to home, an MGB would be interesting, GT or roadster, and better size-wise than a Midget. I wanted to put a Type 3 subframe into the back of our old Mk1 Jetta, but the others from our unit wouldn't let me!

No Das Drag Day for me this year, got to much going on back here. This will be the 2nd one I miss in a row.  :'(

Next year for sure with the NSU.

Jim has finish his work on the car, so will be going up to pick it up tomorrow. Will take some photos of the finish work over the weekend and post them up.

Next work to do is to finish off the welding and put a new front panel on as it's had a hit in it life. Also going to make the rear panel removeable for easy access to the motor.  Then a trial fit of everything just to work out where it all going before paint.

Which yes still don't know what colour to go with.  ::)

Hey Ian yes as Glenn has said the first thing I said was it need a Mag in here.  ;D Can not put a header on as I need to cut the rear panel to do so.

The plan is to still put a turbo motor in it. So don't want to go cutting away metal I'm going to need to put back.

But the more I looked at it the more I was thinking the Ida motor looks at home it there.

Now do I keep it NA?????

Ida motor with an over the top of the motor merged header with stinger through the engine lid, then you don't have to cut the valance :P

Fiatdude I already got a turbo motor in my 65 street bug. Not that I use it for two years now as it sat in my garage.

Small update for today.
Stayed back late at work and machine down the rear drums so I can fit the castle nut on the end of the shorter alxes. 

Also the uj's has turned up, it's off a mk2 golf. I like to try and use as many VW parts I can ;) So should have the steering finish off tomorrow.

 Sorry no real update.

Pedal box has turned up, will post a photo tomorrow.  Have bearing now to fit the VW disk brakes onto the NSU spindles. Just need to make up a pair of spacers and brackets to hold the calipers on at work. Also have started to send parts off for powder coating.

When I first saw this thread, I thought," Ho Hum another Prinz build".. Thinking it was the 30.. But this Mini 'vair is Tits!! ...Is it too late to name it,  " Prinz of Wails" ? A 700 would be cool too. NICE!

Sorry guys no updates apart from a change in plan.

I had some time off over Christmas but unfortunatley I spent it in bed sick. Any way the plan was to put my turbo motor in out of my gold 65 bug. But I have decided to put together a 2387cc NA motor. With some parts I have back here and parts I still need to buy.

I still do not know what colour to paint the car lol

Will get back on it soon thinking of doing a road trip to Germany in March to a NSU parts shop to get all that I need.

Was going to do it white with a Gold metal flake roof, as people link me with Gold because of my beetle. But that's going down the same root as Pete's Fiat 600.

Then I was going to do it Blue no Lee's Renault is light Blue. Lots of my friends keep saying Orange,  but I have already had a Orange car so don't want to do that.

I know it does not really matter if there is two cars the same colour. Just would be nice if I could do something a bit different.

Been having a look on the net for NSUs, and you've pretty much eliminated every colour that looks good on them! I like the idea of a different coloured roof. Dark orange looks spot on, not too light, and I think that a black roof would really set it off. The race NSUs have black stripes in various places too.
I don't like white on them so much, but the same gold as your '65 would look good, especially if you black out the handles and light rings again!
Two tone is the way to go I think!

The original colour of the car is that nsu burnt orange , and all that have seen it on the car think its the dogs dangly bits ,
 all apart from the guy who owns it  ::)

Ok Steve I looked and can not find the paint code for the burned Orange.  It maybe a VW colour as my car is a 70S and VW took over NSU in 69.

Grab a colour chart for the new Fiat 500's. seen a couple of cool colours on these recently that would really suit the NSU. In particular a shade similar to Porsche Olive

This will be a great "Old School" addition on this car. If you use a magneto like you mentioned some where along the way, it'll just scream "Nostalgia!"

If you haven't mounted a fuel cell yet, a couple of suggestions. Most desirable is to mount it fairly close to the fuel pump. Above the tranny would be ideal. Then a short #10 feed line to the pump is all that is needed. The fuel tank should be no less than two gallons. This setup will use a little less than a gallon of methanol on a pass if you drive it to the lanes and back to your pit spot. A little less than a half gallon if you tow to the lanes

Or....

I included a Kinsler "Vapor Separator" tank. Basically it's a surge tank. Mount this above the trans and the fuel pump will draw from it. All the by pass lines would connect to this surge tank. Then, use a larger fuel cell up front and feed the surge tank with an electric pump. A simple feed loop does the trick. A line from the front cell to the surge tank, and a return line from the surge tank back to the front fuel cell. This way, the surge tank stays full (as long as the electric pump can keep up with the motor's demands), you can fill the car with fuel in the front, and the injector pump gets a solid fuel supply. Your "transfer" fuel pump with need to be on the order of 140gph to ensure the small surge tank stays full when the motor is a full throttle.

You can also simply run a fuel cell up front for the pump to pull from, but it would need to be mounted above the fuel pump and you would need a BIG feed line with VERY FEW bends. The feed line would need to be #12 at the very least.

Whichever way you decide, the system will support well over 300hp on methanol if the motor build will handle it. The motor below is 2332 with CB CNC Comp E heads, and makes about 260hp. The Blue Car has gone 11.38 at 119mph at 1900 pounds as pictured. When we had the CB Strip Dominator heads, it made 288. Our car was too heavy and needed more gear to make those see their full potential though.

With the boost in low end torque that methanol provides, that should provide quite an exciting ride in a short wheelbase car! It'll run cool too. It'll use a lot of fuel, but it won't get hot. I've never seen my head temp get above 200°F even when driving on the street.

Thanks for your post Mike the plan is to put a fuel cell up front think im going to need some weight up there. As for a pump I got a black Holley here already to use. I would like to run a 10second 1/4 in the car as Super Street class over here is a 10.90 index, and it always nice to go up with the V8's from time to time.

10.90 should be well within reach if the car weight is in the 1600 lb area.

As for the fuel pump, the Holley Black should do the trick. Simply run a feed line to the surge tank and a return line back to the front cell. No regulator. Just let the fuel circulate. There's a check valve included with the parts that goes into the return line  that will keep about 2-3 psi in the surge tank. Very simple! When you go to start the motor, let the electric pump "charge" the system for a few seconds, and she'll light right up.

When I get my head round running FI and Methanol I'm going to be putting it on the gold turbo car. So I will be keeping a eye on your new setup in your ghia.

Martin, when you get the thing running and make some runs, you'll look back and wonder why does everyone not use methanol! And why did I wait so long to try it.

While everyone else is blowing fans on their junk to cool it down, you'll be ready to go at a moments notice without ever having to use a fan.

There are a couple of downsides to using methanol. But it's piddly-ass stuff compared to the upsides.

I have been talking about running methanol for years just not got round to it. Your right I don't know why more people don't use it. Just the cost of it is a start, the price of race gas over here is nuts. A 5gal tin of C16 is over $200.

Damn! And here I am complaining about the price of methanol going up to $5/gallon. Buying by the 55 gallon drum, I can get it for about $200.

It's probably the shipping that's a part of the price you pay for that C16.

I'd imagine methanol is probably produced locally or semi locally to you. You don't have to use VP's brand. I use what ever I can get the easiest and cheapest. Methanol is methanol. It can be "Bob's Methanol" as long as it's 99% pure

 black holley  works nice and should do well for your application . I like sunoco fuel more and is avaliable here in Holland - also cheaper than VP

Ok a update.

As the NSU has had a accident in it life, someone had put a lot of boby filler into the front panel. I was not to happy with this and started to look for a after maket panel. I shopped around for one, but everyone was out of stock or wanted to much money for one. As I have started to talk with (mymedusa) here on the lounge. He had just got a NSU, but it had seen a hard life and had a lot of rust in it. But the front panel was OK so a deal was made to cut it off.

It has just turned up today from Germany.

damn one day i need also a vw typ1 in an nsu but we startet now with a alfa romeo 1.7 boxer midengine. not much power (about 120-130hp) but who tell it's not possible to boost it ;)
it fits very well in this small car just with a little cutting and we still can use the stock suspension with a little bending and cutting

    Are you making the rear as a removable apron like on a bus so that it will be easier to remove the engine in and out. This is the plan I have for my NSU because I do not have enough room to pull the engine as you would on a bug so I will have a removable apron.

If we're gonna get a header in there , may have to get creative with some valence blisters , I've suggested maybe have to look at some angle flow heads just to give the exhaust plumbing a chance don't really fancy too tight a bend coming outta the head .

Possibly run a curved rolled pan, almost rounded bumper look maybe 4" diameter, plenty of room for pipes then perhaps?

Fit the header then just cut the rear panel about til it fits! :P

Have got some T Bars for it no bumpers going on this car. Along with NO Trim, Lucas Indicators and one peace windows. Can we all see where this is going. :D

I'm off work next week, so going to be starting on the motor.  Going for a 2109cc 76x94 to start with then with a 2387cc later on. The 2109cc with be built with a  Mag case, 76mm Rev Master crank,  H beams, FK89, Comp Elims Heads top off with the MFI I got off Mike Lawless.

The plan is to have it finish and to be driving it down the road by the end of this year.

    Make sure you post pictures of the rear suspension set up.

    Well I brought the NSU from storage over the weekend and I have it on the side of the house on 4 jack stands ready to do some cutting and welding. Anymore pictures of your project I know it as been three months since I had posted.

I got a weeks holiday off work next week, so the plan is to do the inside aluminum panel work. Soon as this is done its over to the paint shop to start shaping the body work and get some paint on it.  Have all the motor parts sat here just waiting on my heads to come back from the machine shop.

Busy winter ahead me thinks.

Well the welding is now 99.9% finished I think.

Jobs this week was to weld the dash up and to make some seat frames (ok it's two pieces of box tube) and some mounts for the fuel tank. So next week or so off to start on some of the paint work.

Compressions just under 12...it's tricky to get it any higher with a small crank and lots a lift...my pistons hold 10cc each...more like buckets than notches!!  :(

OK a update not really about the NSU.

Not to much work has been done on the NSU this year as my weekends have been taken up working at the national motor museum in Beaulieu www.beaulieu.co.uk The on going project at the moment is the Allard Dragster which is Europe first dragster, look here for more history about the car www.theaccelerationarchive.co.uk/acag/acag.html We as a team take the Allard to car show around the country where we do our best to promote the sport of Drag Racing and its history.

This Monday 24th i had the pleasure of spending the afternoon with Don Garlets at Beaulieu www.garlits.com as he and his family was over from the US for the week as Don was being Honour at the British Drag Racing Halll Of Fame gala awards dinner on the Saturday night 22nd. www.britishdragracinghof.co.uk All I can say is what a really nice guy Don is who took the time to chat about his life in the sport.

Any way over the Christmas holidays I have two weeks off work so the plan is to finish off one of the two motors for the NSU. One being a 2109cc 76X94 with Hilborn FI and the other being a 1832cc 66X94 with ida,s. Will post more info about the spec of the motors went I get round to taking some photos.

It's good to see that people are posting a bit more now after Russell post the other day, and will try my best to post a bit more as this is the best VW forum out there if you ask me.

I got most of the parts now only thing I need to get is a gearbox for it. Still doing the body work well I'm not I have given up doing it just can not do it myself so my good friend Russ has been coming over when he is free and doing a bit from time from time.

If I can get it into paint as soon as possible putting it together should be ok as its all been mocked up.

I tried contacting you through Facebook recently, I would like to swap information and stuff that may be of some benefit to us both?

Mine is going to be powered by an RX7 13b Turbo Rotary engine running through a Volks Vagen Type 25 Transaxle ( 5 Speed and Hellish Strong!! ) with Porsche 944 rear trailing arms with BIG brakes.

Unlike yours though I am using a " Classic " Mini front subframe for suspension/brakes & steering.

My intention is to keep things subtle & discreet ( for instance I intend to keep the original tiny exhaust tailpipe poking out the back whilst running the actual exhaust hidden beneath the car )

Hopefully people won't think it's anything but " Standard "??? That is course right up to the moment I start the Engine ! Lol.....

Windows... I had been thinking for a while how I wanted them to look. Wasn't sure if to put all the original glass back in, or go down the Lexan route. Finally I went with the Lexan... Now the next choice was how to fit them into the car. I'm really not a big fan of just welding in a lot of tags. Think it look messy and is not a clean look. So after having a chat with a friend of mine at Spa two month ago. We came up with a plan, well sort of. Sebastian lives in Nice in France. So how were we going to do this... Well good thing for me Seb was coming to race his car at Santa Pod here in the UK. So on the way back he stop for a few days and did the windows for me. He has made a fibreglass frame that goes into the aperture of each window allowing the Lexan to be flush mounted into the car. I think this is a must better way of doing it and the end result is a neater look.
