Title: tapping the case for a crankcase vent?
Post by: 181 on July 18, 2012, 16:05:26 pm
Has anybody tapped engine case in front of the fan shroud for a breather fitting? I consider tapping my case directly above number 1 or 3 cylinder and leading a vent tube to my breather. Any pictures or recommendatiions?

Thank you,

Jan

Haven't done it but I'm curious too. Maybe welding a AN fitting is an option?

Done it on mine but the engine is still in parts ... So don't know if it'll work:

You can follow the build here (sorry in French, but lot of pics for easy understanding)

Vince nice work! But why do you ventilate from your valve covers? Pressure is created in the crankcase.

Lots of valve covers are vented, so mine are.

You would be wise to install one way vents in the hoses to the valve covers, to only let air in.

What aobut letting oil back? even if there is another hose that allows oil to drain back from the breather box,the hoses with the valves in will surely fill up with oil above the valve?

Venting the case in front of the fan housing seems like a good idea initially. Porsche does it, so why not.
Real life says something else. - You get way more oil splash up through the hose than at least I expected. the reason porsche can run with it is most likely that they have drysump oil system, so there is less crankcase pressure.
I have made the mod a couple of times myself, but I stopped again, because taking out the crankcase pressure in the pulley end is way better, eventhough it might not give as clean a look as most people want.

The idea behind the one way vents is to let air in to the covers, not out. Thereby promoting only the pulses tha suck from the heads. Kinda like what vw did on the type 4 FI engines.
